Dental Caries and Salivary Health in Bodybuilders vs. Non-Bodybuilders: A Comparative Study.

OBJECTIVES: Tooth decay is the demineralization of the enamel due to acids produced by bacteria. Bodybuilders use supplements to enhance muscle growth, which may affect salivary flow and composition. Changes in saliva impact its protective function. This study aims to establish a relationship between dental caries and protein consumption in resistance-trained men. METHODS: This cross-sectional investigation was performed in Baghdad city (December 2024-February 2025). The study recruited 200 Iraqi men and divided them into two groups of 100 subjects each: non-bodybuilders and bodybuilders. Den

Cytokines, chemokines, and immune cells involved in oral immunity towards the dental cariogenic bacterium Streptococcus mutans: Therapeutic interventions and vaccination.

Untreated dental caries, or tooth decay, is the most frequent health-related affliction, mainly due to insufficient service in low- and middle-income countries. The inflammatory niche in the presence of Streptococcus mutans and its biofilm in the oral cavity can lead to immune-mediated tissue injury, enamel demineralization, cavitation, pulp infection, dental loss, and extraoral disorders such as endocarditis. Recruiting immune responses to fight pathogens is a novel therapeutic strategy that prevents antimicrobial resistance and regulates the immune microenvironment. Within this manuscript, t

A Comparative Evaluation of Arginine Complex Combined With Flouride and Two Standard Non-Fluoridated Remineralizing Agents: An In Vitro Study.

Background Dental caries represents a dynamic process, often reversible in its early stages. Fluoride has conventionally served as the cornerstone for remineralization and early caries arrest. However, excessive fluoride intake can lead to both local and systemic toxicity. Hence, there's a pressing need to develop adjunct therapies that enhance fluoride's efficacy while minimizing its dosage. This study aims to assess and compare the remineralization potential of a novel combination comprising arginine bicarbonate and fluoride against established technologies such as Bioactive glass (NovaMin T

PDL regeneration via cell homing in delayed replantation of avulsed teeth.

BACKGROUND: This study was aimed to investigate whether regeneration of periodontal ligament (PDL) like tissue could be promoted by stromal cell-derived factor-1 (SDF1) and bone morphogenetic protein-7 (BMP7) induced cell homing in delayed replantation of avulsed teeth. METHODS: Canine mandibular premolar teeth were first extracted and air-dried for 2 h followed by complete detachment of their PDL tissues. The crown and pulp of the teeth were also removed. Twenty-four roots divided into two groups (n = 12/group) were used for the following in vivo transplantation. The roots of Group A were tr

Evaluation of new treatment for incipient enamel demineralization using 45S5 bioglass.

Bioglass 45S5 is a silica-based bioactive glass capable of depositing a layer of hydroxyl carbonate apatite on the surface of the glass when immersed in body fluids. The present paper studies a new technique for treating early human dental enamel caries lesions by using a paste composed of 45S5 bioglass and phosphoric acid. Artificial caries lesions were induced in enamel flat surfaces by means of a decalcification solution. All specimens were exposed to a brushing-abrasion challenge to test the durability of any newly formed layer resulting from the application of 45S5 bioglass paste. The spe

Correlative transmission electron microscopy examination of nondemineralized and demineralized resin-dentin interfaces formed by two dentin adhesive systems.

The resin-dentin interface formed by two dentin adhesives, Optibond (OPTI, Kerr) and Scotchbond Multi-Purpose (SBMP, 3M), was ultramorphologically examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Ultrastructural information from nondemineralized and demineralized sections was correlated. It was hypothesized that the different chemical formulations of the two adhesives would result in a different morphological appearance of the hybrid layer. Ultrastructural TEM examination proved that each of the two dentin adhesive systems was able to establish a micromechanical bond between dentin and resi

Influence of oral hygiene on early enamel caries.

For 548 children aged 4-16 years, mean (+/- SD) age 10.3 +/- 2.7 at visit 1, the dental status was recorded at four consecutive 6-monthly visits. Simultaneously oral hygiene was scored according to a modified patient hygiene performance (PHP) index after application of disclosing solution and before the dental examination. The following cariogenic changes could be observed: initiation (white spot formation), progression (cavitation), stabilisation and regression (disappearance of a white spot). The PHP score was examined in relation to these changes in smooth surfaces, as well as in fissures.

Molecular diagnosis of hypophosphatasia and differential diagnosis by targeted Next Generation Sequencing.

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a rare inherited skeletal dysplasia due to loss of function mutations in the ALPL gene. The disease is subject to an extremely high clinical heterogeneity ranging from a perinatal lethal form to odontohypophosphatasia affecting only teeth. Up to now genetic diagnosis of HPP is performed by sequencing the ALPL gene by Sanger methodology. Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) and campomelic dysplasia (CD) are the main differential diagnoses of severe HPP, so that in case of negative result for ALPL mutations, OI and CD genes had often to be analyzed, lengthening the time before

Discrimination between intact and decayed pulp regions in carious teeth by ADC mapping.

The aim of this study was to evaluate an advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method, apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) mapping, in the functional assessment of carious teeth. 38 extracted human teeth with scores of 0, 3 and 6 according to International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS) criteria were screened and subsequently analyzed by MRI at 2.35 T. Histology sectioning of teeth was used for the gold standard by analyzing two extreme cases (intact and severely decayed). ADC maps of the same teeth were calculated from corresponding diffusion-weighted images and used to o

Pathways of neutrophil enzymatic degradation of resin-based composites and adhesives.

Human neutrophils (HN), white blood cells of the innate immune system, are abundant inhabitants of the oral cavity. It was previously found that these leukocytes can degrade methacrylate resin-based composites (RC), adhesives, monomers, and demineralized dentin. This activity can compromise the tooth-restoration interface, potentially resulting in restoration failure and debonding. Nevertheless, the exact mechanism of this activity is yet to be fully determined. The objectives of this study were to measure cluster of differentiation (CD) marker expression and cell viability of HN when exposed

Multimodal imaging offers new insights into understanding ion penetration in dentin caries using an animal model.

OBJECTIVE: Dentin being an organic-inorganic composite, understanding how inorganic ions behave and bring about changes in the organic matrix is essential to clarify the pathogenesis of dentin caries. We developed a novel in vivo carious restoration model combining quantitative analysis and multimodal imaging to elucidate the pathology of dental caries and to investigate how multi-ions released from restorative materials promote dentin demineralization. METHODS: Carious lesions in maxillary first molars of Sprague-Dawley rats were restored using a glass ionomer cement. We quantified the eleme

Structure of artificial enamel lesions after topical applications of high-concentration sodium fluoride solution in vitro.

A three-layer structure, including a columnar layer (CL), a buffer layer, and unaffected intact enamel, was successively formed from the outer to the inner part of artificial enamel lesions (AEL) by topical applications of a high-concentration acidic sodium fluoride solution (10,000 ppm, pH 5.6) in vitro. The AEL was produced in bovine enamel that was decalcified for 5 days in a lactic acid gel system. The morphological observations by using scanning electron microscopy showed that the CL was made of columnar deposits of small globules about 0.5 microns in diameter. It was observed for the fir

Late secondary alveolar bone grafting using autologous versus alloplastic material for treating patients with cleft lip and palate with one year follow-up-A retrospective comparative study.

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) frequently require secondary alveolar bone grafting (SABG) to restore maxillary continuity and support orthodontic tooth movement. The choice of graft material influences the long-term outcomes, especially in late SABG cases. This retrospective study compared autogenous iliac crest bone grafts to a composite of demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) in patients with unilateral CLP (UCLP) with residual alveolar clefts. Twenty-six patients (≥15 years) were divided equally into two groups: Group A (iliac crest autograft) and Gro
