Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a common disorder with far-reaching health implications. One of the major consequences of OSAS is an impact on neurocognitive functioning. Several studies have shown that OSAS has an adverse effect on inductive and deductive reasoning, attention, vigilance, learning, and memory. Neurocognitive impairment can be measured objectively with tests such as the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised, the Psychomotor Vigilance Task, the Steer Clear Performance Test, and tests of repetitive finger tapping. In children, OSAS may cause attention-deficit hyper

BACKGROUND: Pathological gambling (PG) is an impulse control disorder characterized by persistent and maladaptive gambling behaviors with disruptive consequences for familial, occupational and social functions. The pathophysiology of PG is still unclear, but it is hypothesized that it might include environmental factors coupled with a genetic vulnerability and dysfunctions of different neurotransmitters and selected brain areas. Our study aimed to evaluate a group of patients suffering from PG by means of some neuropsychological tests in order to explore the brain areas related to the disorder

Two experiments investigating the capacity to sustain mental set in dementia were conducted. Experiment 1 analyzed performance of a non-demented control group (NC), participants with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and participants with ischemic vascular dementia (IVD) on the Boston Revision of the Wechsler Memory Scale Mental Control subtest (MC). On simple tasks there were no between-group differences after controlling for time to completion. On complex tasks, NC participants outperformed both dementia groups and AD participants obtained higher accuracy indices than IVD participants. The IVD group

Background: An association between maternal thyroid dysfunction throughout pregnancy and the subsequent risk of neurodevelopmental abnormalities in offspring has been demonstrated. However, the potential effects of maternal thyroid autoimmunity on neurodevelopment in the absence of maternal hypothyroidism remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, we explored the association between maternal thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) positivity and cognitive development in preschool children. Methods: A total of 1849 mother-child pairs were recruited from the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort (MABC) Study. Durin

Working memory (WM) is fundamental to learning, reasoning and everyday functioning and is frequently impaired in cerebral palsy (CP). In severe dyskinetic CP, profound motor and speech impairments limit access to reliable cognitive assessment and intervention. Eye-tracking technology may provide an accessible interface for computerised cognitive training. This study examined the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of adaptive eye-tracking WM training in four young people with severe dyskinetic CP (14-20 years; all female). Participants completed a 5-week intensive Cogmed training (five sessio

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the predictive values of informant-reported memory decline (IMD) among subjective cognitive decline (SCD) older adults from a 7-year community-based cohort study.
METHOD: Ninety SCD participants were included. Demographic data and neuropsychological test scores at both baseline and 7-year follow-up were collected. Differences between SCD with IMD (+IMD) and SCD without IMD (-IMD) were compared. Logistic regression models were used to determine whether baseline IMD could predict diagnostic outcomes at 7-year follow-up.
RESULTS: Forty-one percent of SCD

INTRODUCTION: Benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) is a common epileptic syndrome in childhood, characterized by brief and infrequent partial motor seizures, with or without generalization and mostly recurring during sleep. Because of its favorable efficacy, tolerability, and safety profile, levetiracetam (LEV) monotherapy is often administered in these patients. Long-term effects of LEV therapy and its influence on cognitive functions remain controversial.
PURPOSE: This evaluated the changes in the cognitive profile of children with BECTS treated with LEV monotherapy for 2 year

OBJECTIVE: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most commonly prescribed medications for geriatric depression. The association of late-life depression and cognitive impairment has been well documented. However, there have been few placebo-controlled trials examining the impact of SSRIs on cognitive functioning.
DESIGN: Prepost neuropsychological (NP) data collected as part of an 8-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of citalopram in depressed patients aged 75 years and older were used to examine change in cognitive functioning.
SETTING: University-affiliated outpa

BACKGROUND: The successful regulation of sensory input to the central nervous system depends on the descending pain modulatory system (DPMS). For the effective regulation of sensory input to the central nervous system and behavioral responses to pain, the DPMS is required. Its connection to fibromyalgia (FM)-related cognitive dysfunction has not yet been investigated. Therefore, this study tested whether measures of verbal fluency, sustained attention, and short-term and working memory could distinguish FM patients from healthy controls (HC). Additionally, it investigated, using a standardized

BACKGROUND: Temporal lobe encephaloceles (TE) are increasingly recognized as a cause of drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy. Improved recognition of these lesions offers an opportunity to treat them with a limited resection sparing the hippocampus. However, as they can be difficult to identify on imaging, additional clues pointing to the diagnosis can be helpful. We sought to understand the baseline cognitive/neuropsychological profile in patients with left temporal lobe epilepsy caused by encephaloceles compared with that caused by mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS), a common entity in the dif

BACKGROUND: The burden of illness associated with bipolar disorder (BD) warrants early pre-emption/prevention. Prediction models limited to psychiatric phenomenology have insufficient predictive power. Herein, we aimed to evaluate whether the presence of overweight/obesity is associated with greater cognitive decline in individuals at high risk (HR) or ultra high risk (UHR) for BD.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis to investigate the moderational role of body mass index (BMI) on measures of cognitive function. Subjects between the ages of 8 and 28 years with a positive family his

Due to the neurotoxicity effects of general anesthesia (GA) and sedatives found in animal studies, there is a general recommendation to avoid nonurgent surgical procedures requiring anesthesia in children younger than 3 years of age. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of anesthesia-related postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) on the first day (Day 1) and at 6 weeks after elective noncardiac surgery in school-age children. This was a prospective cohort study of 118 children undergoing GA and 126 age-matched controls of school children aged 5 to 12 years. All children were
