Helicobacter pylori among Egyptian patients with chronic liver diseases. A comparative study.

The prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in Egyptian patients with different stages of liver diseases was compared to those with normal liver status. Eighty patients subjected to upper gastrointestinal endoscopy were enrolled. They were divided according to their liver status into two groups; the first patients with liver cirrhosis and the second who had no liver affection. Gall bladder diseases were excluded by abdominal ultrasound examinations. Endoscopic antral mucosal biopsies were used for H. pylori screening by both culture and urease test, and for histopathological examinations. Both group

Therapeutic immunization against Helicobacter mustelae in naturally infected ferrets.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Helicobacter infection of the gastric antrum is responsible for a number of gastric disorders. Antibiotic therapy is lengthy and is not always effective. It has been shown previously that oral immunization against Helicobacter felis in mice can prevent colonization after challenge. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy of therapeutic immunization in eradicating an established Helicobacter infection and in reducing gastritis. METHODS: Domestic ferrets, confirmed to be infected with Helicobacter mustelae by gastric endoscopy, were orally immunized with varying

Relationship between infective load of Helicobacter pylori and reactive oxygen metabolite production in antral mucosa.

Helicobacter pylori infection has been associated with stimulation of gastric mucosal reactive oxygen metabolite production. To provide further evidence of a causal relationship we looked for a dose-response relationship. We studied antral biopsy material from 110 patients. Quantitative H. pylori assessments were made using histologic and microbiologic methods. Reactive oxygen metabolite production was measured by luminol-dependent chemiluminescence. The usefulness of timed urease test colour changes as a guide to infective load was assessed. There was a positive association between mucosal re

Prevalence of Campylobacter pylori in esophagitis, gastritis, and duodenal disease.

The relationship between the presence of Campylobacter pylori and esophagitis was studied in patients undergoing paired biopsies of distal esophagus and gastric antrum during esophagogastroduodenoscopy. Biopsy specimens were examined for urease activity and for the presence of C pylori by culture and by histologic examination of hematoxylin-eosin- and Warthin-Starry-stained sections. Sixty-two patients were entered into the study. All esophageal biopsy specimens, regardless of histologic findings, were negative for the presence of C pylori by urease test, culture, and histologic examination. O

Effects of cloransulam-methyl and diclosulam on soil nitrogen and carbon cycle-related microorganisms.

Cloransulam-methyl and diclosulam are applied to soybean fields to control broad-leaved weeds. These herbicides have become a focus of attention because of their low application dose and high-efficiency advantages. However, the effects of these two herbicides on soil microorganisms are unknown. The present study investigated the effects of 0.05, 0.5, and 2.5 mg kg-1 of cloransulam-methyl or diclosulam on soil microbes after 7, 14, 28, 42, and 56 days of exposure. The results showed that the two herbicides increased the abundances of functional bacteria related to pesticide degradation. Based o

Urea transport and hydrolysis in the rumen: A review.

Inefficient dietary nitrogen (N) conversion to microbial proteins, and the subsequent use by ruminants, is a major research focus across different fields. Excess bacterial ammonia (NH3) produced due to degradation or hydrolyses of N containing compounds, such as urea, leads to an inefficiency in a host's ability to utilize nitrogen. Urea is a non-protein N containing compound used by ruminants as an ammonia source, obtained from feed and endogenous sources. It is hydrolyzed by ureases from rumen bacteria to produce NH3 which is used for microbial protein synthesis. However, lack of information

Anti-Adhesion Activity of A2-type Proanthocyanidins (a Cranberry Major Component) on Uropathogenic E. coli and P. mirabilis Strains.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are relatively common in women and may be classified as uncomplicated or complicated, depending upon the urinary tract anatomy and physiology. Acute uncomplicated cystitis (AUC) occurs when urinary pathogens from the bowel or vagina colonize the periurethral mucosa and reach the bladder. The vast majority of episodes in healthy women involving the same bacterial strain that caused the initial infection are thought to be reinfections. About 90% of AUC are caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), but Proteus mirabilis also plays an important role. Several

N-hydroxyurea and acyl nitroso compounds as nitroxyl (HNO) and nitric oxide (NO) donors.

Hydroxyurea has emerged as a new therapy for sickle cell disease but a complete mechanistic description of its beneficial actions does not exist. Patients taking hydroxyurea show evidence for the in vivo conversion of hydroxyurea to nitric oxide (NO), which also has drawn interest as a sickle cell disease treatment. While the chemical oxidation of hydroxyurea produces NO or NO-related products, NO formation from the reactions of hydroxyurea and hemoglobin do not occur fast enough to account for the observed increases in patients taking hydroxyurea. Both horseradish peroxidase and catalase cata

Helicobacter pylori and gastric acid: biological and therapeutic implications.

Helicobacter pylori is highly adapted to its unusual ecological niche in the human stomach. Urease activity permits H. pylori survival at a pH of <4 in vitro and is required for the organism to colonize in animal models. However, urease does not play an important role in the survival of the organism in a pH range between 4 and 7. Other mechanisms of pH homeostasis remain poorly understood, but preliminary studies indicate that novel proteins are produced when H.pylori cells are shifted from pH 7 to 3, and the gene encoding a P-type adenosine triphosphatase that may catalyze NH4+/H+ exchange ac

Local and systemic immune response in Helicobacter pylori-associated chronic gastritis before and after treatment.

Ten patients with Helicobacter pylori-associated chronic gastritis were given combination therapy for 6 weeks with a bismuth subnitrate-containing compound and bacampicillin. The eradication rate was 40% 6 weeks after the end of treatment. Two patients remained H. pylori-negative at long-term follow-up after 6 and 17 months; that is, H. pylori was only eradicated in 20% of the patients after long-term observation. By dot blot and immunoblotting both urease and an urease-associated heat shock protein (HSP62) were found to be specific and constant immunodominant H. pylori antigens. The immunohis

Helicobacter pylori and associated gastroduodenal diseases. Review article.

Helicobacter pylori is a microaerophilic, Gram-negative, spiral rod, the role of which in different gastric diseases has been investigated worldwide since the beginning of the 1980s. H. pylori has been shown to be the causative agent in active chronic gastritis, and it is regularly found in patients endoscopied for duodenal ulcer. The bacterium is also frequently isolated from persons with gastric ulcer, gastric carcinoma and non-ulcer dyspepsia. Apart from cultivation of the bacterium, other diagnostic procedures include various staining methods and urease tests of gastric biopsy samples. The

Helicobacter pylori and gastroduodenal disease: pathogenesis and host-parasite interaction.

Helicobacter pylori has been shown to be the cause of chronic active gastritis and the evidence that it is involved in the development of peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer is compelling. Narrow host range, tissue specificity, and chronic inflammation are hallmarks of infection. The study of virulence determinants has just begun but it seems likely that urease, adhesins, cytotoxins, and mediators of inflammation will prove to be important.

[Diagnosis of Campylobacter infection in patients with diseases of the stomach and duodenum].

The method of C. pylori diagnosis proposed by the authors proved more informative that histological detection of the infection. The technique employs evaluation of urease activity in gastric contents. Upon comparison of the two diagnostic modalities in 30 patients with chronic gastroduodenitis and peptic ulcer there was no definite correlation in their results. It was noted that C. pylori invasion produced negligible characteristic symptoms in gastroduodenal affections.

Reusable nano-BG-FET for point-of-care estimation of ammonia and urea in human urine.

A back-gate-field-effect-transistor (BG-FET) has been developed to selectively detect ammonia and urea. The BG-FET was prepared on a p-type Si substrate with an n-type channel of CdS-TiO2 nanocomposite and poly-methyl methacrylate film as dielectric layer. The reusability of the sensor was ensured by putting it as a cover to a chamber where samples were detected. The BG-FET showed an increase in drain current with the increase in ammonia release from chamber because higher numbers of charge carriers were created when ammonia adsorped on CdS-TiO2 nanostructures. Control experiments suggested th
