BACKGROUND: We recently described the effect of a single-dose antihelminthic treatment on vaccine immunogenicity to a seasonal influenza vaccine. Here we report the effect of antihelminthics on the immunogenicity of a meningococcal vaccine and a cholera vaccine in primary school children living in Lambaréné, Gabon. Since infection with helminths remains a major public health problem and the influence on cognitive and physical development as well as the immunomodulatory effects are well established, we investigated if a single-dose antihelminthic treatment prior to immunization positively influ

BACKGROUND: In vitro sensitivity assays are crucial to detect and monitor drug resistance. Plasmodium falciparum has developed resistance to almost all anti-malarial drugs. Although different in vitro drug assays are available, some of their inherent characteristics limit their application, especially in the field. A recently developed approach based on the flow cytometric detection of haemozoin (Hz) allowed reagent-free monitoring of parasite maturation and detection of drug effects in culture-adapted parasites. In this study, the set-up, performance and usefulness of this novel assay were in

Rabies virus (RABV) is enzootic throughout Africa, with the domestic dog (Canis familiaris) being the principal vector. Dog rabies is estimated to cause 24,000 human deaths per year in Africa, however, this estimate is still considered to be conservative. Two sub-Saharan African RABV lineages have been detected in West Africa. Lineage 2 is present throughout West Africa, whereas Africa 1a dominates in northern and eastern Africa, but has been detected in Nigeria and Gabon, and Africa 1b was previously absent from West Africa. We confirmed the presence of RABV in a cohort of 76 brain samples ob

BACKGROUND: Falciparum Malaria, an infectious disease caused by the apicomplexan parasite Plasmodium falciparum, is among the leading causes of death and morbidity attributable to infectious diseases worldwide. In Gabon, Central Africa, one out of four inpatients have severe malarial anemia (SMA), a life-threatening complication if left untreated. Emerging drug resistant parasites might aggravate the situation. This case control study investigates biomarkers of enhanced hemolysis in hospitalized children with either SMA or mild malaria (MM).
METHODS AND FINDINGS: Ninety-one children were incl

BACKGROUND: Takayasu's disease (TM) is a vasculitis of the aorta and its main branches, Infectious diseases, especially Mycobacterium tuberculosis, can be a trigger for the development of TM by a hypersensitivity reaction, but paradoxically very few cases of the disease are reported in the literature review.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Through a retrospective study carried out in the departments of internal medicine and cardiology of the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Libreville (CHUL) in Gabon, we identified all the observations of TM diagnosed in the said departments from 03/2014 to 05/2022

BACKGROUND: Efficacy of sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine, the malaria chemoprophylaxis used in pregnant women, and in children when combined with amodiaquine, is threatened by the accumulation of mutations in the Plasmodium falciparum dihydropteroate synthase (pfdhps) and dihydrofolate reductase (pfdhfr) genes. Data on the prevalence of resistant alleles in central Africa and the new pfdhps I431V mutation, particularly associated with other mutations to form the pfdhps vagKgs allele, are scarce. We explored the frequency and geographical distribution of pfdhps and pfdhfr mutations in central Africa i

Ebola virus (EBOV) is a highly virulent human pathogen. Recovery of infected patients is associated with efficient EBOV-specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) responses, whereas fatal outcome is associated with defective humoral immunity. As B-cell epitopes on EBOV are poorly defined, we sought to identify specific epitopes in four EBOV proteins (Glycoprotein (GP), Nucleoprotein (NP), and matrix Viral Protein (VP)40 and VP35). For the first time, we tested EBOV IgG+ sera from asymptomatic individuals and symptomatic Gabonese survivors, collected during the early humoral response (seven days after the

Striking trait polymorphisms are worthy of study in natural populations because they can often shed light on processes of phenotypic divergence and specialization, adaptive evolution, and (in some cases) the early stages of speciation. We examined patterns of genetic variation within and between populations of mormyrid fishes that are morphologically cryptic in sympatry but produce alternate types of electric organ discharge (EOD). Other species in a large group containing a clade of these morphologically cryptic EOD types produce stereotyped, species-typical EOD waveforms thought to function

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use is a significant public health problem in Sub Sahara Africa, and various demographic factors influence its prevalence. Understanding the prevalence and factors associated with tobacco use can inform targeted interventions. Hence, this study aimed to identify determinants of tobacco use among men aged 15 to 59 in SSA countries from 2016 to 2024 using a multilevel mixed-effect logistic regression analysis.
METHODS: This study used data from Demographics and Health Surveys, a cross sectional survey conducted in 28 countries across SSA between 2016 and 2024. This analysi

Prolonged fever is an important cause of morbidity in pediatric practice, especially in tropical areas. It is above all a problem of etiological diagnosis given the vast number of etiologies. In sub-Saharan Africa, practitioners more often focus on bacterial infections and malaria at the expense of other infectious diseases such as human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), most often leading to overuse of antibiotics and antimalarials. A dramatic resurgence of HAT, also called sleeping sickness, has been reported during the last few decades in large areas of Central Africa. Furthermore, with the de

We carried out a retrospective study of 101 multiple pregnancies between January 1st 1997 and June 30 1999, to investigate the prognosis of twin deliveries at the Josephine Bongo Maternity Unit. The frequency of twin deliveries was 2.22%, corresponding to over 1 in 45 deliveries. Mean birth weight was 2,309.6 +/- 369.31 g for the first twin and 2,234.31 +/- 397.58 g for the second twin. The frequency of cesarean section was 11% for the first twin and 18% for the second twin. The neonatal mortality rate was 30 per thousand for the first twin and 50 per thousand for the second twin. UNLABELLED: Malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), which detect Plasmodium falciparum (Pf)-specific histidine-rich protein-2 (HRP2), have increasing importance for the diagnosis and control of malaria, especially also in regions where routine diagnosis by microscopy is not available. HRP2-based RDTs have a similar sensitivity to expert microscopy, but their reported low specificity can lead to high false positivity rates, particularly in high-endemic areas. Despite the widespread use of RDTs, models investigating the dynamics of HRP2 clearance following Pf treatment focus rather on short-term

BACKGROUND: Loiasis is a vector-borne disease in Central and West Africa. While there is still uncertainty to what extent loiasis is responsible for population morbidity, individuals having both loiasis and onchocerciasis have a high risk of fatal encephalopathy when treatment (ie, ivermectin) for onchocerciasis is given. Therefore it is current policy that communities of high loiasis-burden are excluded from mass drug administration programmes of ivermectin. To address this treatment gap we present diagnostic scores, based on clinical and behavioural predictors that may help to rapidly identi

INTRODUCTION: Replication of the human immunodeficiency virus involves an obligatory step of reverse transcription of the viral ribonucleic acid genome into a double-stranded deoxyribonucleic acid, and subsequent integration of the deoxyribonucleic acid into the human chromatin to form the proviral deoxyribonucleic acid. This proviral human immunodeficiency virus deoxyribonucleic acid is a critical marker for the diagnosis of acute infections, mother-to-child transmissions and for the confirmation of indeterminate serological reactions. We describe a case of a human immunodeficiency virus posi

Tabernanthe iboga belongs to the Apocynaceae family. In this study, we report the case of a 37-year-old black male working as a security agent in Paris and found dead naked on the beach in Gabon after consumption of iboga. Autopsy revealed a drowning fatality and a myocardial abnormality (myocardial bridging). Samples of blood, urine, bile, gastric content, liver, lungs, vitreous, spleen and hair were taken. Biological fluids were liquid-liquid extracted with saturated NH4Cl pH 9.5 and methylene chloride/isopropanol (95/5, v/v) in presence of clonazepam-d(4), used as internal standard. After d

BACKGROUND: Women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) have a higher risk of unintended pregnancies that are more likely to be terminated, most of which are unsafe with associated complications. Unmet need for contraception is highest in SSA and exceeds the global average. This study investigates the association between unmet/met need for contraception and pregnancy termination SSA.
METHODS: We used pooled data from Demographic and Health Surveys conducted from January 2010 to December 2018 in 32 countries in SSA. Our study involved 265,505 women with diverse contraception needs and with complete data

BACKGROUND: Loiasis is a filarial infection endemic in the rainforest zone of west and central Africa particularly in Cameroon, Gabon, Republic of Congo, and Democratic Republic of the Congo. Repeated treatments with ivermectin have been delivered using the annual community directed treatment with ivermectin (CDTI) approach for several years to control onchocerciasis in some Loa loa-Onchocerca volvulus co-endemic areas. The impact of CDTI on loiasis parasitological indicators is not known. We, therefore, designed this cross sectional study to explore the effects of several rounds of CDTI on pa

BACKGROUND: Updated, accurate and comprehensive information on the distribution of human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), also known as sleeping sickness, is critically important to plan and monitor control activities. We describe input data, methodology, preliminary results and future prospects of the HAT Atlas initiative, which will allow major improvements in the understanding of the spatial distribution of the disease.
METHODS: Up-to-date as well as historical data collected by national sleeping sickness control programmes, non-governmental organizations and research institutes have been co
