Diagnostic performances of procalcitonin and C-reactive protein for sepsis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Sepsis-3 2016 definition defined sepsis as a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Procalcitonin (PCT) and C-reactive protein (CRP) have been widely studied for the detection of sepsis according to the former definitions. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performances of PCT and CRP for sepsis, according to the Sepsis-2 and Sepsis-3 definitions. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library were searched. Original articles that reported both diagnostic performances of PCT and CRP for sepsis were included. The pool

In Vitro Oxygen Glucose Deprivation Model of Ischemic Stroke: A Proteomics-Driven Systems Biological Perspective.

Oxygen glucose deprivation (OGD) of brain cells is the commonest in vitro model of ischemic stroke that is used extensively for basic and preclinical stroke research. Protein mass spectrometry is one of the most promising and rapidly evolving technologies in biomedical research. A systems-level understanding of cell-type-specific responses to oxygen and glucose deprivation without systemic influence is a prerequisite to delineate the response of the neurovascular unit following ischemic stroke. In this systematic review, we summarize the proteomics studies done on different OGD models. These s

Development and Application of an Intelligent Diagnosis System for Retinal Vein Occlusion Based on Deep Learning.

This study is aimed at developing an intelligent algorithm based on deep learning and discussing its application for the classification and diagnosis of retinal vein occlusions (RVO) using fundus images. A total of 501 fundus images of healthy eyes and patients with RVO were used for model training and testing to investigate an intelligent diagnosis system. The images were first classified into four categories by fundus disease specialists: (i) healthy fundus (group 0), (ii) branch RVO (BRVO) (group 1), (iii) central RVO (CRVO) (group 2), and (iv) macular branch RVO (MBRVO) (group 3), before b

Spontaneous CD4+ T Cell Activation and Differentiation in Lupus-Prone B6.Nba2 Mice Is IFNAR-Independent.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by dysregulated T and B lymphocytes. Type I interferons (IFN-I) have been shown to play important pathogenic roles in both SLE patients and mouse models of lupus. Recent studies have shown that B cell intrinsic responses to IFN-I are enough to drive B cell differentiation into autoantibody-secreting memory B cells and plasma cells, although lower levels of residual auto-reactive cells remain present. We speculated that IFN-I stimulation of T cells would similarly drive specific T-cell associated lupus phenotypes includi

More is more: Evidence for the incremental value of the SCID-II/SCID-5-PD specific factors over and above a general personality disorder factor.

Currently, 3 competing conceptualizations of personality dysfunction can be distinguished: the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) categorical model delineating 10 distinct types of personality disorders (PDs); the alternative model for PDs (DSM-5 Section III), which assesses personality functioning and traits separately; and the International Classification of Diseases, 11th Version conceptualization, which provides 1 single code for the presence of a PD (which is based on problems in functioning) as well as codes that specify the level of the disorder

Bayesian modeling of muscle biopsy contracture testing for malignant hyperthermia susceptibility.

BACKGROUND: Phenotyping malignant hyperthermia (MH) by contracture testing has a low but quantifiable degree of inaccuracy, measured by its sensitivity and specificity. Quantifying the limitations inherent in diagnostic testing for MH can help resolve issues in clinical practice, such as the interpretation of a negative test and the apparent lack of complete genetic linkage to RYR1. METHODS: Bayesian models, mathematical descriptions of the outcome of diagnostic testing, were constructed. The inputs to the model include patient factors, summarized in a single number called pretest probability

From bench to bedside: relevant animal models across the migraine attack phases.

Migraine is a debilitating brain disorder for which there remains a considerable therapeutic gap that needs to be addressed in order to develop novel effective treatment options for patients. Preclinical translational models have contributed significantly to migraine research by improving our understanding of migraine pathophysiology as well as identifying and validating new drug targets. In this review, we will summarise key animal models and discuss how commonly used experimental readouts used in these models can be integrated for the investigation of the various phases of a migraine attack.

A personalized metabolic modelling approach through integrated analysis of RNA-Seq-based genomic variants and gene expression levels in Alzheimer's disease.

Generating condition-specific metabolic models by mapping gene expression data to genome-scale metabolic models (GEMs) is a routine approach to elucidate disease mechanisms from a metabolic perspective. On the other hand, integrating variants that perturb enzyme functionality from the same RNA-seq data may enhance GEM accuracy, offering insights into genome-wide metabolic pathology. Our study pioneers the extraction of both transcriptomic and genomic data from the same RNA-seq data to reconstruct personalized metabolic models. We map genes with significantly higher load of pathogenic variants

Robot-guided osteotomy in fibula free flap mandibular reconstruction: a preclinical study.

Various methods currently exist to guide fibular osteotomy positioning in fibula free flap mandibular reconstruction, but patient-specific navigation methods and cutting guides require experience, and may be time-consuming and/or expensive. This study describes a robot-guided osteotomy technique for mandible reconstruction using a fibula free flap according to virtual preoperative planning. The method was assessed on five 3D-printed models and a cadaveric model. The precision of the robot-guided osteotomy was evaluated by measuring the deviations between the lengths and angles of the fragments

Theoretical model for treating behavioural aspects of urinary incontinence SINOPSIS This reflective article presents a theoretical model of behavioural evaluation and intervention for women with urinary incontinence. Nola Pender's health promotion model (HPM) was used as a reference to develop this proposal. Behavioural measures were identified to build the model: constipation control, bladder training, urination position, reduction of irritating drinks, water intake, and pelvic floor muscle training. Next, specific actions were defined to investigate and intervene on certain behavioural aspec

Lack of spontaneous age-related brain pathology in Octodon degus: a reappraisal of the model.

Neurodegenerative diseases are characterized by the degeneration of specific brain areas associated with accumulation of disease-related protein in extra- or intra-cellular deposits. Their preclinical investigations are mostly based on genetically-engineered animals. Despite their interest, these models are often based on high level of disease-related protein expression, thus questioning their relevance to human pathology and calling for the alternate use of ecological models. In the past few years, Octodon degus has emerged as a promising animal model displaying age-dependent Alzheimer's dise

A multi-biomarker machine learning approach for early prediction of interstitial lung disease in rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a severe complication affecting 10-30% of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Current diagnostic methods typically detect ILD only after substantial lung damage has occurred. This delay emphasizes the need for early detection strategies. This study aims to develop and validate machine learning models for early RA-ILD prediction and identify key predictive biomarkers. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study enrolling 149 RA patients (84 with ILD, 65 without ILD) between January 2020 and December 2023. We evaluated demographic characteristics
