Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: First Estimates of the Prevalence by Sex Amongst People Who Use Psychoactive Substances and Alcohol.

Objective: The World Health Organization describes neurodevelopmental disorders as behavioral and cognitive disorders that occur during a baby's developmental period: these include autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) amongst others. The original aim of this study was to provide estimates of the prevalence of ADHD and ASD by sex and by substance used amongst people who engage with services for drug and alcohol use. This study ultimately focused on people who use substances, are attending treatment and support services and have ADHD symptoms. Method

Prescription Trends for Bipolar Disorder With and Without Comorbid Substance Use and Anxiety Disorders: A Global Bipolar Cohort Collaborative Study.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate pharmacological treatment patterns in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) with and without comorbid substance use disorder (SUD) and anxiety disorder (AX), we leveraged the Global Bipolar Cohort to analyze cross-regional practices across North America, Europe, and the Pacific. METHODS: Fourteen cohorts contributed aggregate data on pharmacotherapy, demographics, diagnostic subtypes, and comorbidities. Proportional meta-analyses using generalized linear mixed models were conducted to examine prescription trends and identify clinical differences. RESULTS: The samp

Substance use and disordered eating risk among college students with obsessive-compulsive conditions.

PURPOSE: College students are at higher risk for problematic substance use and disordered eating. Few studies have examined the comorbid risks associated with OCD despite the increased prevalence of OCD among young adults. This study examined substance use and disordered eating risk associated with OCD conditions among college students and how this association may vary by sex/gender. METHODS: Data were from 92,757 undergraduate students aged 18-24 enrolled in 216 colleges between Fall 2021 and Fall 2022, from the American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment III. Longitudinal association of distress tolerance with borderline and antisocial personality traits in a substance use treatment sample attempting sobriety.

Distress tolerance (DT) is thought to be a transdiagnostic risk factor for psychopathology, especially borderline (BPD) and antisocial personality disorders (ASPD). However, most of the studies documenting the relationship of DT with BPD and ASPD have been cross-sectional, with few examining basic longitudinal patterns of change or interrelationships of these constructs. The present study examined longitudinal patterns of change and prospective reciprocal associations of DT with BPD and ASPD-related pathological personality traits (PPTs) in an adult clinical sample (N = 354) receiving inpatien

Clinical characteristics and functioning of adults with bipolar I disorder: Evidence from the mental and substance use disorders prevalence study.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of clinical, treatment and life circumstances of individuals with bipolar I disorder (BP-I) in US households is informed by decades old epidemiological surveys. METHODS: The Mental and Substance Use Disorders Prevalence Study was conducted October 2020-October 2022. Clinicians administered the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-5 diagnosing 12-month prevalence of BP-I and other mental health disorders (MHD) among 4764 adults aged 18-65 years and collected sociodemographic information. We examined clinical characteristics, differences by sex and age among adults wi

Adolescent Psychedelic Use and Psychotic or Manic Symptoms.

IMPORTANCE: While psychedelic-assisted therapy has shown promise in the treatment of certain psychiatric disorders, little is known about the potential risk of psychotic or manic symptoms following naturalistic psychedelic use, especially among adolescents. OBJECTIVE: To investigate associations between naturalistic psychedelic use and self-reported psychotic or manic symptoms in adolescents using a genetically informative design. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This study included a large sample of adolescent twins (assessed at age 15, 18, and 24 years) born between July 1992 and Decembe

Targeting Higher-Order Dimensions of Personality in Treatment as a Parsimonious Means to Address Co-Occurring Psychopathology.

People with borderline personality disorder (BPD) commonly have co-occurring mental health conditions that may be accounted for by higher-order factors in dimensional models of psychopathology. BPD Compass is a cognitive-behavioral treatment developed to target broad personality domains (i.e., negative affectivity, antagonism, disinhibition) associated with BPD and related conditions. The purpose of the present study was to explore the extent to which BPD Compass can serve as a transdiagnostic intervention for these comorbid conditions. Participants (N = 100; Mage = 28.13, 73.7% female, 79.6%

Trends in Involuntary Psychiatric Hospitalization in British Columbia: Descriptive Analysis of Population-Based Linked Administrative Data from 2008 to 2018.

INTRODUCTION: Involuntary psychiatric hospitalization occurs when someone with a serious mental disorder requires treatment without their consent. Trends vary globally, and currently, there is limited data on involuntary hospitalization in Canada. We examine involuntary hospitalization trends in British Columbia, Canada, and describe the social and clinical characteristics of people ages 15 and older who were involuntarily hospitalized between 2008/2009 and 2017/2018. METHOD: We used population-based linked administrative data to examine and compare trends in involuntary and voluntary hospita

Gender-related associations between psychiatric disorders and alcohol use disorder: Findings from the french "Mental health in the general population" survey.

Women with alcohol use disorder (AUD) might be particularly vulnerable to psychiatric comorbidities. However, population surveys have yielded disparate findings. We used data from the French Mental Health in the General Population survey to investigate gender-related risks of psychiatric comorbidities associated with AUD. A cross-sectional survey based on face-to-face interviews, including the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview, was conducted among 38,717 subjects. Logistic regression models were used to assess risks of psychiatric comorbidities associated with AUD. After adjustment

Facility-Level Excess Mortality of VHA Patients With Mental Health or Substance Use Disorder Diagnoses.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with mental or substance use disorders have higher mortality rates than people in the general population. How excess mortality varies across health care facilities is unknown. The authors sought to investigate facility-level mortality rates among Veterans Health Administration (VHA) patients who had received diagnoses of mental or substance use disorders. METHODS: An electronic medical records-based retrospective cohort study was conducted, encompassing 8,812,373 unique users of 139 VHA facilities from 2011 to 2016. Covariates included age, sex, and past-year diagnoses

A Systematic Review of Interventions to Improve Mental Health and Substance Use Outcomes for Individuals with Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

Individuals with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) experience remarkably high rates of mental health and substance use challenges, beginning early in life and extending throughout adulthood. Proactive intervention can help to mitigate some of these negative experiences. Although the literature on FASD intervention is growing, there is currently a lack of consolidated evidence on interventions that may improve mental health and substance use outcomes in this population. Informed by a life course perspective, we undertook a systematic review of the literature to identify interventions that

[Impulsivity as an immediate factor between addictive disorders and Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder].

Impulsivity is a behavior in everyday life of mentally healthy individuals. But in some cases the degree of impulsivity begins to create negative effects on one's life and acquires pathological connotation. Two clinical entities in which can be observed a high degree of impulsivity is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Addictive disorders. In these disorders, both impulsive act and impulsive choice are observed. According to some researchers, genetic factors are involved in the control of impulsivity. The impulsive choice, in the sense of delay discounting, may be an intermedi

Common mental disorders in young adults born late-preterm.

BACKGROUND: Results of adulthood mental health of those born late-preterm (34 + 0-36 + 6 weeks + days of gestation) are mixed and based on national registers. We examined if late-preterm birth was associated with a higher risk for common mental disorders in young adulthood when using a diagnostic interview, and if this risk decreased as gestational age increased. METHOD: A total of 800 young adults (mean = 25.3, s.d. = 0.62 years), born 1985-1986, participated in a follow-up of the Arvo Ylppö Longitudinal Study. Prevalence and correlates of psychotic like experiences in a nationally representative community sample of adolescents in Ireland.

Adolescent psychotic like experiences (PLEs) are an important area of research, yet only a small number of community surveys have investigated their psychosocial correlates. This study presents the prevalence and correlates of three types of PLEs in a nationally representative community sample of 12-19 year olds in Ireland (N=5910). Correlates are considered across five domains: demographic, stressful life experiences, emotional/behavioral problems, substance use, and personal resources. Auditory hallucinations were reported by 13.7% of participants, 10.4% reported visual hallucinations and 13

A latent class analysis to empirically describe eating disorders through developmental stages.

OBJECTIVES: The current standards for classifying eating disorders were primarily informed by adult, clinical study populations, while it is unknown whether an empirically based classification system can be supported across preadolescence through young adulthood. Using latent class analyses, we sought to empirically classify disordered eating in females from preadolescence to young adulthood, and assess the association between classes and adverse outcomes. METHOD: Latent class models were fit using observations from the 9,039 girls participating in the growing up today study, an on-going coho

The spirit of St Louis: the contributions of Lee N. Robins to North American psychiatric epidemiology.

This article takes up the history of North American psychiatric epidemiology with reference to production of knowledge concerning sociopathic or antisocial personality disorder and drug dependence, abuse, and/or addiction. These overlapping arenas provide a microcosm within which to explore the larger shift of postwar psychiatric epidemiology from community studies based on psychological scales to studies based on specific diagnostic criteria. This paper places the figure of sociologist Lee Nelken Robins within the context of the Department of Psychiatry in the School of Medicine at Washington

Empirically derived subgroups of bipolar I patients with different comorbidity patterns of anxiety and substance use disorders in Han Chinese population.

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar-I disorder (BPI) often co-occurred with anxiety (ANX) and substance use disorders (SUD), which poses challenges in public health and clinical treatment, and adds complexity in searching for relevant etiologic factors. The present study sought to identify subgroups of BPI patients using comorbidity patterns with ANX and SUD. METHODS: Clinical patients (N=306) diagnosed with BPI were recruited and interviewed using the Composite International Diagnostic Interview to collect data on demographics and clinical features, including episodic information, impairments, and lifetime d

Impact of substance-induced and general medical condition exclusion criteria on the prevalence of common mental disorders as defined by the CIDI.

OBJECTIVES: It has been previously argued that the methodology used by the Composite International Diagnostic Interview version 2.1 to assess the substance-induced and general medical condition exclusion criteria are inadequate. As a result prevalence estimates generated from epidemiological studies using this interview may be underestimated. The purpose of the current study was to examine the substance-induced and general medical condition exclusion criteria in the Australian National Survey for Mental Health and Well-being and determine the impact that they have on prevalence estimates of th

Nicotine interventions with comorbid populations.

This article reviews and comments on studies of treatment and prevention of cigarette smoking in individuals with comorbid psychiatric and non-nicotine substance abuse disorders. Despite a high prevalence of cigarette smoking in these populations and interest in quitting, treatment interventions and studies of these interventions are sparse. Multiple barriers to implementation of interventions exist. Existing data suggest that provision of cigarette-smoking interventions in substance abuse treatment patients is efficacious and does not appear to interfere with abstinence from alcohol or illici

Diagnosing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in patients with substance use disorders.

Diagnosing attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults can be complicated by several factors including the inability to meet appropriate developmental criteria as listed in the DSM-IV. The stringent DSM-IV criteria for ADHD may make diagnosing ADHD in adults difficult, which may lead to an underdiagnosis of ADHD in the adult population. Clinicians must rely on the diagnosis of ADHD not otherwise specified for adults with ADHD symptomatology, but this category does not provide clear delineations for patients whose symptoms vary within this category. Further complications arise due
