Central serous chorioretinopathy associated with nonspecific orbital inflammation: a case report.

We herein present a rare case of acute central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) associated with nonspecific orbital inflammation (NSOI). A 38-year-old woman presented with a 3-day history of ocular pain, reduced vision, periorbital swelling, proptosis, conjunctival chemosis, and restricted eye movements. Optical coherence tomography of the affected eye confirmed signs of CSC. Additionally, a computed tomography scan revealed enlargement of intraconal soft tissues and the lacrimal gland. Ocular ultrasonography detected posterior sclera thickening, indicating posterior scleritis. Following the dia

Guidelines for the standardized diagnosis and treatment of non-specific orbital inflammation (2024).

Non-specific orbital inflammation (NSOI) is a non-infectious orbital inflammation. Although it is often considered the most common diagnosis in orbital biopsies, it is an exclusionary diagnosis that requires ruling out systemic disease or other possible causes. Its characteristics include acute orbital signs and symptoms, including pain, proptosis, periorbital edema, chemosis, diplopia, and visual impairment. The clinical manifestations and histological findings of NSOI are heterogeneous, without specific diagnostic criteria or treatment guidelines, which poses significant challenges for diagn

Rapid progression of orbital abscess requiring lateral canthotomy in a pediatric patient.

Subperiosteal abscess (SPA) is a rare complication of acute sinusitis in children that may develop rapidly. In this case report, we describe an 11 year-old boy who presented with a large SPA 2 days after being diagnosed with conjunctivitis. The patient required emergent lateral canthotomy and cantholysis (LCC), IV antibiotics, and emergent surgery. It is crucial that emergency physicians be able to identify and treat this vision-threatening complication.

Coupled position and attitude control of a servicer spacecraft in rendezvous with an orbiting target.

Rendezvous is one of the fundamental phases of on-orbit servicing (OOS) missions. Since it requires high accuracy and safety, modeling is an indispensable part. Therefore, this article puts forward an approach for boosting the exactitude of the final proximity phase of a servicer spacecraft using precise modeling. Unlike other similar works that solely use linear models to design controllers, this paper employs a fully nonlinear model and considers most possible uncertainties and disturbances. In this regard, first a complete nonlinear relative pose (i.e., concurrent position attitude) motion

Surgical reconstruction for spheno-orbital meningioma extending into the sphenoid sinus with hyperostosis.

Spheno-orbital meningiomas (SOMs) are complex tumors that grow and extend into nearby structures. SOM tumor growth is often associated with hyperostosis caused by tumor cell infiltration and bone alteration. We describe the case of a 64-year-old man with SOM that extended into the sphenoid sinus without a direct connection between the intracranial and extracranial lesions. This report emphasizes the importance of identifying the growth patterns of SOMs and assessing the paranasal sinuses adjacent to the hyperostotic orbit walls from preoperative images.

Orbital fractures and concurrent ocular injury in a New Zealand tertiary centre.

BACKGROUND: Orbital fractures are a common presentation to acute care and carry an associated risk of ocular injury, however, previous research has not investigated injury rates by fracture category. These patients are frequently assessed by non-ophthalmic clinicians, however, limited data exists regarding referral patterns and how this impacts recorded injury rates (1-3). METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all orbital fractures presenting to a tertiary hospital in Christchurch, New Zealand between March 2019 and March 2021. Data including mechanism of injury, fracture type, demo

Intraoperative ultrasound-assisted surgery in orbital apex tumours: technical note.

BACKGROUND: Since the introduction of ultrasonography (US) in the operating theatre in the early 1970s, intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) has become a very useful tool for real-time neurosurgical procedures. The main limitation of US is its innately reduced capacity to penetrate the intact skull. This is the reason why most IOUS-assisted procedures are usually performed via transfontanellar or after a craniotomy or laminotomy is done. OBJECTIVE: We present a 54-year-old woman with a right optic nerve sheath meningioma, who was operated on by a right cranio-orbital approach and IOUS-assisted tu

Using three-dimensional printed models for trainee orbital fracture education.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensional printing is an underutilized technology in ophthalmology training; its use must be explored in complex educational scenarios. This study described a novel approach to trainee education of orbital fracture repair utilizing three-dimensional (3D) printed models as a teaching tool. METHODS: Ophthalmology residents and oculoplastic fellows from multiple training institutions underwent an educational session on orbital fractures, learning through four different models. Participants analyzed orbital fractures through computerized tomography (CT) imaging alone and then

Tumi Flap: A Novel Modification to Frontal Flap for Orbital Exenteration Defects.

Orbital exenteration remains a significant disfigurement in the face. Many reconstructive options were reported for one stage covering the defects. Local flaps are used primarily in elderly patients who are not candidates for microvascular procedures. Local flaps generally close the gap without achieving 3-dimensional adjustment perioperatively. Secondary procedures or shrinking by time are needed for better orbital adaptation. In this case report, we describe a novel frontal flap design influenced by a Tumi knife, an ancient Peruvian trepanation instrument. The design helps us to create a con

Central vein stenosis: a rare cause of orbital congestion in a haemodialysis patient.

We report a rare, potentially sight-threatening ocular complication due to central venous stenosis related to a previous site of haemodialysis catheter. A dialysis-dependent woman in her 60s presented with left eye redness for 1 month followed by a remarkably prominent vessel on the left upper eyelid for 2 weeks. Examinations found left eyelid oedema with prominent venous dilatation on the upper eyelid as well as left eye mild proptosis, conjunctiva injection with corkscrew vessels, raised intraocular pressure, and dilated and tortuous retina vessels. Central thoracic venogram showed total occ

[Research progress in clinical application of three-dimensional reconstruction in orbital measurement].

The structure of orbit is complex and its function is critical. Quantitative determination of orbital volume is valuable to diagnosis and treatment of orbital diseases, but a standardized and reproducible orbital volume measurement method is still not available. Recently, with the development of three-dimensional reconstruction, many researchers gradually convert their insight into three-dimensional orbital measurement. This paper reviews the common methods of three-dimensional orbital measurement used by investigators, including some innovative ideas, and their clinical applications in order
