Fifteen-Year Comparison of Wear and Osteolysis Analysis for Cross-Linked or Conventional Polyethylene in Cementless Total Hip Arthroplasty for Hip Dysplasia-A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) acetabular liners used in cementless total hip arthroplasty (THA) have demonstrated better wear resistance at 10 years compared with conventional polyethylene (CPE) liners. No clinical studies have compared XPLE to CPE liners beyond 10 years. METHODS: We performed a 15-year retrospective cohort study on cementless THA performed in patients with developmental hip dysplasia to measure the differences in polyethylene wear rates and the presence of osteolysis. Twenty-four THAs with XLPE and 17 THAs with CPE were evaluated. The mean age of patients was

One-year incidence of prosthetic joint infection in total hip arthroplasty: a cohort study with linkage of the Danish Hip Arthroplasty Register and Danish Microbiology Databases.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the trend of Prosthetic Joint Infections (PJI) following primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) and the antimicrobial resistance of the bacteria causing these infections. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified a population-based cohort of patients in the Danish Hip Arthroplasty Register (DHR) who had primary THA and received their surgery in Jutland or Funen between 2005 and 2014. We followed the patients until revision, emigration, death, or up to 1-year of follow-up. Data from the DHR were combined with those from microbiology databases, the National Register of Patients,

The effect of education and supervised exercise vs. education alone on the time to total hip replacement in patients with severe hip osteoarthritis. A randomized clinical trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: The age- and gender-specific incidence of total hip replacement surgery has increased over the last two decades in all age groups. Recent studies indicate that non-surgical interventions are effective in reducing pain and disability, even at later stages of the disease when joint replacement is considered. We hypothesize that the time to hip replacement can be postponed in patients with severe hip osteoarthritis following participation in a patient education and supervised exercise program when compared to patients receiving patient education alone. METHODS/DESIGN: A prospective,

The Sacro-Femoral-Pubic Angle May Estimate Pelvic Tilt in Patients with Severe Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip and Leg Length Discrepancy Undergoing Total Hip Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Spinopelvic movement disorders are associated with instability after total hip arthroplasty (THA). In patients with Crowe type 3-4 developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and leg length discrepancy (LLD), sagittal radiographs may not allow accurate assessment of spinopelvic motion. This study aimed to evaluate the sacro-femoral-pubic (SFP) angle, a coronal plane parameter, as a predictor of calculated pelvic tilt (PT). METHODS: Thirty-two patients with neglected unilateral Crowe type 3-4 DDH who underwent THA were retrospectively analyzed. Preoperative SFP angle and sacral slope

Association Between Self-Reported Hip Crepitus and Pain, Quality of Life, and Psychological Features in Football Players With Hip/Groin Pain: A 2-Year Longitudinal Study.

CONTEXT: Hip crepitus creates negative emotions and beliefs, leading to adaptations in sports and daily life activities. People with hip/groin pain present psychological responses to pain, and hip crepitus severity may amplify those features. We aimed to explore associations between self-reported hip crepitus severity and pain, quality of life, and psychological features at baseline and 2-year follow-up in football players with hip/groin pain. DESIGN: Longitudinal. METHODS: We recruited 184 football players with hip/groin pain (20% females, mean age [SD] = 27.6 [0.4]). Self-reported crepitus

Patient-Reported Outcome Measures After Direct Anterior Total Hip Arthroplasty Are Comparable Between Patients With Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip and Osteoarthritis: A Propensity-Matched Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Degenerative changes secondary to hip dysplasia may be treated with total hip arthroplasty (THA) through a direct anterior approach. However, this may be challenging due to altered pathoanatomy and difficult visualization of the femur. The purpose of this study was to compare patient-reported outcome measures between patients with hip dysplasia and matched controls with osteoarthritis who underwent direct anterior THA. METHODS: Patients who underwent direct anterior THA were retrospectively reviewed. Dysplastic hips were propensity matched to hips with osteoarthritis on a 1:4 basi

Direct anterior approach versus posterior approach in total hip arthroplasty after ONFH with failed vascularized iliac crest bone grafting for hip preservation: a retrospective comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Hip preservation surgery with vascularized iliac bone flap transplantation is currently an important method for treating patients with early-stage femoral head necrosis and collapse. However, if hip preservation fails, total hip arthroplasty (THA) is the only treatment option. This study aimed to compare the clinical efficacy and complications of direct anterior (DAA) and posterior (PA) approaches for subsequent THA in patients with failed hip preservation. METHODS: The data of patients who initially underwent vascularized iliac crest bone grafting for hip preservation, and subseq

The effect of gait training with low-intensity neuromuscular electrical stimulation of hip abductor muscles in two patients following surgery for hip fracture: Two case reports.

BACKGROUND: The rate of force development (RFD) is an indicator of muscle strength. A previous study reported that the RFD of hip abductor muscles was increased by neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) to gluteus medius (GM) during gait in healthy adults. However, the effects for patients following femoral head replacement for hip fracture are unclear. PURPOSE: The aim of this case report was to investigate the effects of gait training with sub-motor threshold NMES on RFD of hip abductor muscles in two patients following femoral head replacement for hip fracture compared to gait trainin
