Neuroectodermal influence in odontogenic cyst and tumor: Evidence through CD56 immunoexpression.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: CD56, associated with neuroectodermal differentiation of the embryonal cells, is often considered a marker of neural lineage. Odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs) are of particular interest because of their characteristic histopathologic features, high recurrence rate, and aggressive behavior. CD56 immunoreactivity in these lesions has been reported with very high frequency. The present study analyzes the immunoexpression of CD56 in ameloblastoma (AM) and OKC to infer neuroectodermal influence in the pathogenesis of odontogenic lesions and its correlation with clinicopatho

Expanding the Clinical Spectrum of DRP2-Associated Charcot-Marie-Tooth Disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Germline truncating variants in the DRP2 gene (encoding dystrophin-related protein 2) cause the disruption of the periaxin-DRP2-dystroglycan complex and have been linked to Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. However, the causality and the underlying phenotype of the genetic alterations are not clearly defined. METHODS: This cross-sectional retrospective observational study includes 9 patients with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT) with DRP2 germline variants evaluated at 6 centers throughout Spain. RESULTS: We identified 7 Spanish families with 4 different DRP2 likely pa

Numerical study on the three-dimensional temperature distribution according to laser conditions in photothermal therapy of peri-implantitis.

PURPOSE: Dental implants have been successfully implemented as a treatment for tooth loss. However, peri-implantitis, an inflammatory reaction owing to microbial deposition around the implant, can lead to implant failure. So, it is necessary to treat peri-implantitis. Therefore, this numerical study is aimed at investigating conditions for treating peri-implantitis. METHODS: Photothermal therapy, a laser treatment method, utilizes photothermal effect, in which light is converted to heat. This technique has advantage of selectively curing inflamed tissues by increasing their temperature. Accor

One year clinical success of pulpectomy in primary molars with iodoform-calcium hydroxide paste.

OBJECTIVES: In order to retain primary molars, eg with irreversible pulpitis or pulp necrosis, pulpectomy can be an alternative to extraction. However, reports on the success of pulpectomies in primary teeth vary widely in the literature. Thus, the objective of this study was not only to analyze the success rate of primary tooth pulpectomy 12 months posttreatment in the setting of a specialized clinic, but also to identify and analyze various factors that modify the outcome. METHOD AND MATERIALS: Between 2012 and 2018, a total of 76 dental records of the Department of Preventive and Pediatri

Retrieval of extensive gutta-percha extruded into the maxillary sinus: use of 3-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: Close proximity of the maxillary sinus to the roots of maxillary teeth can predispose to the inadvertent deposition of endodontic products into the maxillary sinus. One such material is thermoplasticized injectable gutta-percha, which has gained popularity of late. As a consequence of overfilling, some patients warrant surgical retrieval. METHODS: A case report of extreme overextension of gutta-percha within the maxillary sinus after endodontic retreatment on tooth #14 was provided. The distobuccal and palatal canals had been obturated with gutta-percha master cones and backfill

Management of a deeply impacted mandibular third molar and associated large dentigerous cyst to avoid nerve injury and improve periodontal healing: case report.

As dentigerous cysts increase in size, the risk of postsurgical complications increases as well. Emphasis is usually placed on the risk of neurologic damage caused by trauma during and after surgical removal and of mandibular fracture resulting from the large residual bone defect. However, influence on the periodontal status of neighbouring teeth should also be taken into account. In this article, we present an interdisciplinary, safe, minimally invasive approach to treating large dentigerous cysts associated with deeply impacted third molars. A dentigerous cyst is an epithelial-lined patholog

Stem cell-delivery therapeutics for periodontal tissue regeneration.

Periodontitis, an inflammatory disease, is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults. Attempts to regenerate the complex system of tooth-supporting apparatus (i.e., the periodontal ligament, alveolar bone and root cementum) after loss/damage due to periodontitis have made some progress recently and provide a useful experimental model for the evaluation of future regenerative therapies. Concentrated efforts have now moved from the use of guided tissue/bone regeneration technology, a variety of growth factors and various bone grafts/substitutes toward the design and practice of endogenous re

Thickness of the anterior maxillary facial bone wall-a retrospective radiographic study using cone beam computed tomography.

The purpose of this retrospective radiographic study was to analyze the thickness of the facial bone wall at teeth in the anterior maxilla based on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, since this anatomical structure is important for the selection of an appropriate treatment approach in patients undergoing postextraction implant placement. A total of 125 CBCT scans met the inclusion criteria, resulting in a sample size of 498 teeth. The thickness of the facial bone wall in the respective sagittal scans was measured perpendicular to the long axis of the tooth at two locations: at the cr

The in vitro effect of pH on osteoclasts and bone resorption in the cat: implications for the pathogenesis of FORL.

Dental disease due to osteoclast over-activity reaches epidemic proportions in older domestic cats and has also been reported in wild cats. Feline osteoclastic resorptive lesions (FORL) involve extensive resorption of the tooth leaving it liable to root fracture and subsequent tooth loss. The aetio-pathogenesis of FORL is not known. Recent work has shown that systemic acidosis causes increased osteoclast activation and that loci of infection or inflammation in cat mouth are likely to be acidotic. To investigate this, we generated osteoclasts from cat blood and found that they formed in large n

The anesthetic onset and duration of a new lidocaine/prilocaine gel intra-pocket anesthetic (Oraqix) for periodontal scaling/root planing.

BACKGROUND: A new non-injection anesthetic, lidocaine/prilocaine gel (Oraqix, AstraZeneca) in a reversible thermosetting system, has been developed to provide local anesthesia for scaling/root planing (SRP). The aim of this study was to determine the anesthetic onset and duration of the gel for SRP in patients with periodontitis. METHODS: 30 patients were randomized to either 30 s, 2 min, or 5 min of treatment with the gel prior to SRP of a tooth. The gel was applied to periodontal pockets with a blunt applicator. On completion of the SRP of each tooth (2-3 teeth treated/patient), the patient

Effects of prostaglandin inhibition on the bone activities associated with the spontaneous drift of molar teeth in the rat.

Little is known about local bone regulation that enables spontaneous molar tooth drift. In this study the role of prostaglandins (PGs) were investigated in the rat by inhibiting PG-synthesis with indomethacin (7 mg/kg/d). Untreated animals were killed at the start of the experiment, while treated ones were killed after 3, 7, or 14 days of treatment. Mandibles were processed for histomorphometry without demineralization. Changes in osteoclasts and extent of the different steps of the bone remodeling sequence (resorption, reversal, and formation) were assessed along the remodeling side of the so
