Left ear dichotic listening performance on consonant-vowel combinations and digits in subtypes of reading-disabled children.

Twenty reading comprehension-disabled (CD) and 20 reading comprehension and word recognition-disabled (CWRD), right-handed male children were matched with 20 normal-achieving age-matched controls and 20 normal-achieving reading level-matched controls and tested for left ear report on dichotic listening tasks using digits and consonant-vowel combinations (CVs). Left ear report for CVs and digits did not correlate for any of the groups. Both reading-disabled groups showed lower left ear report on digits. On CVs the CD group showed a high left ear report but only when there were no priming precur

Autosomal dominant duplication of the renal collecting system, hearing loss, and external ear anomalies: a new syndrome?

We report two families in which propositi had severe bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, a preauricular pit or tag, and duplication of the ureters or bifid renal pelvices. Other relatives had one or more of these anomalies in a pattern suggesting autosomal dominant inheritance with reduced penetrance and variable expressivity. We suggest the term "branchio-oto-ureteral syndrome" to designate this condition.

Delayed onset of hypopituitarism: sequelae of therapeutic irradiation of central nervous system, eye, and middle ear tumors.

Four children with short stature who received irradiation to the head in conventional doses had clinical and laboratory evidence of hypothalamic-pituitary hormone deficiencies several years later. Growth hormone was deficient in all. One patient also had evidence of TSH, ACTH, and gonadotropin deficiency. Basal prolactin levels and prolactin response to synthetic TRF were normal in all patients tested. Treatment with human growth hormone significantly increased growth rate. We suggest that children should have the hypothalamic-pituitary area shielded from irradiation. Periodic measurements of

Deep Learning-Based Inner Ear Subregion Segmentation in 3D T2-Weighted MRI Using Label-Preserving Data Augmentation.

Inner ear segmentation supports the diagnosis and treatment planning of auditory-related disorders such as Meniere's disease. However, manual annotation of inner ear structures on MR images is both time-consuming and labor-intensive. To address this limitation, we developed a deep learning method that takes T2-weighted MR images as input and segments the inner ear into three subregions: the cochlear basal turn, the cochlear mid-to-apical turn, and the vestibule including the semicircular canals. A total of 74 three-dimensional (3D) T2-weighted MR images were retrospectively collected and divid

Ear-Worn Inertial Sensors Can Predict Gait Metrics and Reconstruct Vertical Ground Reaction Force Curves During Running.

Ear-worn wearables (aka: earbuds, hearables, or earables) are commonly used by runners for entertainment, and many modern devices also include inertial sensors for user interaction. We propose harnessing the technology embedded in earbuds to capture fundamental aspects of running mechanics and make them available to the wider community of users, outside a lab setting. While other wearables such as insoles or ankle-/sacrum-mounted inertial measurement units have already been presented, ear-worn devices may have a better potential for adoption and therefore offer an optimal compromise between va

Impact of Helicopter Vibrations on In-Ear PPG Monitoring for Vital Signs-Mountain Rescue Technology Study (MoReTech).

Pulsoximeters are widely used in the medical care of preclinical patients to evaluate the cardiorespiratory status and monitor basic vital signs, such as pulse rate (PR) and oxygen saturation (SpO2). In many preclinical situations, air transport of the patient by helicopter is necessary. Conventional pulse oximeters, mostly used on the patient's finger, are prone to motion artifacts during transportation. Therefore, this study aims to determine whether simulated helicopter vibration has an impact on the photoplethysmogram (PPG) derived from an in-ear sensor at the external ear canal and whethe

Costal cartilage tissue regeneration after the modified first-stage autologous ear reconstruction for microtia: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: The modified first-stage autologous ear reconstruction for patients with microtia has been part of our regular practice since 2020, with long-term follow-up revealing no thoracic complications in the patients. Our previous clinical studies systematically investigated and advocated for the critical role of preserving the intact costal cartilage membrane and its precise suturing. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study focused on primary reconstruction for congenital microtia. Patients were screened based on exclusion and inclusion criteria. Data on patient demographics and three-d

Hair Removal with 755 nm Alexandrite Laser via Subcutaneous Route in Stage-III Ear Reconstruction by Expansion.

BACKGROUND: Congenital microtia reconstruction often introduces unwanted hair onto the new auricle. Laser hair removal can address this issue, but conventional external treatments require multiple sessions, increasing the overall treatment time, discomfort, and cost. Preclinical studies suggest that delivering laser energy from the flap's underside may improve efficiency by directly targeting hair follicles. We evaluated an intraoperative subcutaneous laser depilation approach applied during stage-III surgery to improve hair removal in this setting. METHODS: A prospective cohort study include

Recolonization dynamics of the middle ear microbiota following MESNA-assisted dissection in pediatric cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media.

INTRODUCTION: Cholesteatomatous chronic otitis media (CCOM) remains a clinical challenge due to its high recurrence rates despite surgical intervention. Sodium 2-mercaptoethanesulphonate (MESNA) is used to assist dissection, yet its impact on the middle ear microbiome and ecological recovery remains poorly understood. The aim of this study is to characterize the microbiota of paediatric CCOM and evaluate the ecological shifts induced by MESNA-assisted surgery. METHODS: We analyzed 16S rRNA gene sequences (V3-V4) from middle ear tissue of paediatric patients with CCOM (CCOM Before MESNA, n = 1

Tic-Like Repetitive Ear-Popping Behavior With Objective Eustachian Tube Opening in an Adult With Tourette Syndrome.

Tourette syndrome presents with diverse motor and vocal tics, yet involvement of Eustachian tube dynamics has not been previously described. We report the case of a 31-year-old woman who developed an unusual symptom she described as an "ear-popping tic," characterized by a strong premonitory urge to release air from the ears and clicking sounds. Her long clinical history included childhood-onset tics, emotional instability, psychiatric hospitalizations, and fluctuating tic severity. At age 31, she reported repetitive ear-popping sensations accompanied by voluntary suppression to some extent. E

Bioadhesive drug-loaded microparticles prolong drug retention in the middle ear and ameliorate cisplatin-induced hearing loss.

Hearing loss represents a common adverse effect following platinum-based chemotherapy regimens. The therapeutic management of inner ear diseases is significantly constrained by the blood-labyrinth barrier, which restricts the penetration of drug molecules into the endolymphatic, thereby limiting their therapeutic efficacy. Local drug delivery has emerged as a safe and effective method for the treatment of inner ear diseases. Nevertheless, the suboptimal retention duration of therapeutic agents within the middle ear substantially compromises drug delivery efficiency. To overcome this limitation

Lrig3-deficient mice exhibit strain-specific alterations in liver fat accumulation, intestinal morphology, and middle ear inflammation.

The transmembrane protein leucine-rich repeats and immunoglobulin-like domains 3 (LRIG3) regulates fat metabolism and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) signaling. Lrig3-deficient mice exhibit impaired development of the snout and the inner ear lateral canal, neural defects, and cardiac hypertrophy in adulthood. However, no thorough and unbiased analysis of the physiological functions of Lrig3 has previously been performed. To address this knowledge gap, we performed histopathological examination of 42 tissues and organs from 1-year-old female C57BL/6JBomTac and 129S1-U mice with different Lrig3
