Pyrazine-based monoboron complexes bearing two fluorine atoms (BF2 complex) or two phenyl groups (BPh2 complex) on the boron atom were synthesized, and the fluorescence properties were investigated. Excited state lifetimes of hypoxanthine and four methylxanthine compounds (paraxanthine, theophylline, theobromine, and caffeine) were studied by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy in aqueous and acetonitrile solution. Photocatalytic reduction of aqueous Cr(VI) was successfully achieved on nanostructured SnIn(4)S(8). The SnIn(4)S(8) particles with flower-like nanostructure were synthesized via a facile solvothermal method. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) indicated that the SnIn(4)S(8) particles had strong absorption in visible region and the band gap was estimated to be from 2.27 to 2.35 eV. BACKGROUND: Palytoxin is most commonly reported after ingestion of seafood. We report a case of palytoxin poisoning from dermal absorption with local toxicity from zoanthid coral in a patient with intact skin.
CASE REPORT: A 25-year-old previously healthy woman handled a zoanthid coral from a home aquarium without any barrier protection. The patient manifested neurologic symptoms of perioral paresthesia and dysguesia. In addition, there was local dermatologic toxicity that persisted for several days. The patient was treated supportively with corticosteroids and a histamine antagonist.

DNA template driven CdSe nanobeads (NBs) and nanowires (NWs) have been synthesized by an electrodeposition technique. The synthesis protocol has yielded randomly oriented cubic CdSe NBs with mean size approximately 3.0 nm in presence of single stranded DNA, poly G(30). Polarization-sensitive photodetectors are demonstrated using solution-synthesized CdSe nanowire (NW) solids. Photocurrent action spectra taken with a tunable white light source match the solution linear absorption spectra of the NWs, showing that the NW network is responsible for the device photoconductivity. Although calcium supplements are widely used in the treatment of osteoporosis their beneficial effect is not conclusively established. The biochemical effects of a calcium supplement (1 g/d) given for between 6 and 36 months were studied in 20 postmenopausal osteoporotic women who had normal calcium absorption. The mean fasting urinary hydroxyproline/creatinine ratio decreased from 0.024 +/- 0.002 to 0.016 +/- 0.001 (P less than 0.005) indicating a significant reduction in bone resorption. Three silicon-containing compounds (magnesium trisilicate BP, crushed quartz and crushed Arran granite) were added to the drinking water (250 mg/l) of three groups of male guinea pigs for four months. In many laboratories, rapid slide tests incorporating differential absorption have replaced heterophil antibody tube tests in the investigation of suspect infectious mononucleosis. The present report describes serologic data from five individuals whose Monospot tests remained falsely positive for four years or more without other evidence of infectious mononucleosis or underlying disease states.
