Effects of external rotation on anteroposterior translations in the shoulder: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Using physical examination to make the diagnosis of shoulder instability can be difficult, because typical examination maneuvers are qualitative, difficult to standardize, and not reproducible. Measuring shoulder translation is especially difficult, which is a particular problem, because measuring it inaccurately may result in improper treatment of instability. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: The objective of this study was to use a magnetic motion tracking system to quantify the effects of external rotation of the abducted shoulder on a simulated simple translation test in healthy subjects.

Automated segmentation of the parotid gland based on atlas registration and machine learning: a longitudinal MRI study in head-and-neck radiation therapy.

PURPOSE: To develop an automated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) parotid segmentation method to monitor radiation-induced parotid gland changes in patients after head and neck radiation therapy (RT). METHODS AND MATERIALS: The proposed method combines the atlas registration method, which captures the global variation of anatomy, with a machine learning technology, which captures the local statistical features, to automatically segment the parotid glands from the MRIs. The segmentation method consists of 3 major steps. First, an atlas (pre-RT MRI and manually contoured parotid gland mask) is

Does the presence or location of graphic markers affect untrained listeners' ratings of severity of dysphonia?

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of presence and location of severity labels for different types of visual analog scales (VAS) on overall severity (OS) ratings in dysphonic speech. STUDY DESIGN: Experimental, between group comparisons. METHODS: Dysphonic and normal voice samples from male and female speakers were presented to inexperienced listeners for judgments of OS. To rate samples, listeners used an undifferentiated 100-mm VAS labeled at the extremes, a VAS with nonlinearly distributed labels as in the "beta" version of the Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (CAPE-V), o

Analysis of interobserver reproducibility in grading histological patterns of dysplastic nevi.

BACKGROUND: Dysplastic nevi are among the most important cutaneous melanoma simulators. They are important risk markers for this neoplasia and can be its potential precursors. Some authors found a statistically significant relationship between the degree of dysplasia and the risk for developing melanoma. However, reproducibility of grading criteria ranged from poor to fair in the researched articles. OBJECTIVE: To test the reproducibility of the grading criteria proposed by Sagebiel et al. regarding dysplastic nevi. METHODS: Histological specimens of 75 dysplastic nevi were graded, independe

Optical coherence tomography as a method to identify parathyroid glands.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The identification of parathyroid glands can be a major problem in parathyroid surgery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in distinguishing between parathyroid tissue, thyroid tissue, lymph nodes, and adipose tissue. METHODS: Ex vivo OCT images as well as histological sections were generated from parathyroid glands, thyroid tissue, lymph nodes and fat in order to define significant morphologic differences between these entities. As a second step all OCT images were separately evaluated by two blinded inves

Interobserver agreement in the reporting of cervical biopsy specimens obtained from women screened by visual inspection with acetic acid and hybrid capture 2.

Visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA) and human papillomavirus detection have sensitivity higher than cytology but lower specificity. The high false-positive rate of either test poses a challenge to the colposcopists who obtain biopsies from the innocuous changes and to the pathologists who have to interpret large numbers of specimens that are either normal or have low-grade abnormalities. Interobserver variation in histopathologic interpretations of cervical punch biopsy specimens is high, specially for the lower-grade abnormalities. Use of the modified Bethesda system to report histology

Can we improve the positive predictive value of atypical glandular cells not otherwise specified?

The category of atypical glandular cells (AGC) in gynecologic cytopathology presents many well-documented diagnostic challenges, the most significant related to high interobserver variability, low specificity, and low positive predictive value. The current Bethesda System provides criteria for specific glandular categories including atypical endocervical cells not otherwise specified (AEC-NOS), AEC favor neoplastic, and atypical endometrial cells. The Bethesda System does, however, acknowledge that in some cases AGC cannot be categorized based upon cell of origin, in which case the generic ter

New visual rating system for medial temporal lobe atrophy: a simple diagnostic tool for routine examinations.

AIM: We estimated the usefulness of our new scale to rate medial temporal atrophy with short inversion time inversion recovery images. METHODS: Alzheimer's disease (AD) subjects (n= 34) and non-demented subjects (n= 19) were recruited for this study. First, coronal short inversion time inversion recovery images were scanned vertical to the long axis of hippocampus. Next, the single image in which peduncles appeared widest was adopted for estimation. The parahippocampal cerebrospinal fluid space was divided into three parts: the outer, upper and inner parts. The hippocampus was defined as a st

Myocardial edema as detected by pre-contrast T1 and T2 CMR delineates area at risk associated with acute myocardial infarction.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine whether cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) in vivo T1 mapping can measure myocardial area at risk (AAR) compared with microspheres or T2 mapping CMR. BACKGROUND: If T2-weighted CMR is abnormal in the AAR due to edema related to myocardial ischemia, then T1-weighted CMR should also be able to detect and accurately quantify AAR. METHODS: Dogs (n = 9) underwent a 2-h coronary occlusion followed by 4 h of reperfusion. CMR of the left ventricle was performed for mapping of T1 and T2 prior to any contrast administration. AAR was defined as regions t
