Prevalence and risk factors for Chlamydia trachomatis infection among young Thai men in 2008-2009.

BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) infection and other sexually transmitted infections in men potentially contribute significantly in sustaining the spread of the infection. To describe the distribution and related sexual behaviors, we conducted a cross-sectional study among young Thai men using a (1:30) systematic sampling of all newly inducted military conscripts in Thailand. METHODS: In November 2008 and May 2009, participants' urine and serum samples were tested for CT and Neisseria gonorrhoeae, using a multiplex polymerase chain reaction technique, and serologic testing

Risk factors for adolescent sex offender recidivism: evaluation of predictive factors and comparison of three groups based upon victim type.

This study investigated differences in recidivism risk factors and traits associated with psychopathy among 3 groups of male adolescent sexual offenders (N=156): offenders against children, offenders against peers or adults, and mixed type offenders. Furthermore, those same variables were examined for their association with sexual and nonsexual recidivism and the 3 groups were compared for differences in rates of recidivism. Based upon both juvenile and adult recidivism data, 6.4% of the sample reoffended sexually and 30.1% reoffended nonsexually. Retrospective risk assessments were completed

HIV transmission risk behavior among men and women living with HIV in 4 cities in the United States.

Determining rates of HIV transmission risk behavior among HIV-positive individuals is a public health priority, especially as infected persons live longer because of improved medical treatments. Few studies have assessed the potential for transmission to the partners of HIV-positive persons who engage in high-risk activities. A total of 3723 HIV-infected persons (1918 men who have sex with men [MSM], 978 women, and 827 heterosexual men) were interviewed in clinics and community-based agencies in Los Angeles, Milwaukee, New York City, and San Francisco from June 2000 to January 2002 regarding s

Social implications of sexually transmitted cancer.

The long, tedious search for the causes of and cure for the human nemesis, cancer, has not resulted in one astounding breakthrough discovery. Instead, researchers have slowly and painstakingly made small inroads into the understanding of the way cell growth goes awry and becomes malignant, destroying tissues and, if unchecked, spreading to other organs of the body and eventually causing death. One of those inroads is the discovery that a cancer of the uterine cervix is almost certainly caused by a virus transmitted through sexual contact. This article presents the biological, clinical, and psy

Prevalence of antibodies to human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 virus-like particles in relation to cervical HPV infection among college women.

A human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) virus-like particle (VLP)-based enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure serum antibody to capsid proteins in 376 sexually active college women who were also screened for the presence of genital HPVs by PCR and interviewed for demographic and behavioral risk factors for HPV infection. The seroprevalence was 46% in women with HPV-16 DNA in the genital tract. The corresponding values for women who harbored other HPV types or no HPV in the genital tract were 30 and 19%, respectively (HPV-16 group versus no-HPV group; odds ratio [OR], 3.

Descriptive analysis of individual and community factors among African American youths in urban public housing.

African American adolescents are disproportionately represented in urban public housing developments. These neighborhoods are generally characterized by high rates of poverty, crime, violence, and disorganization. Although evidence is emerging on youths in these communities, little is known about their depressive symptoms, perceived efficacy, or frequency of substance use and sex-risk behavior. Further, even less is known about their exposure to community and household violence, their parents' behavior, or their sense of connection to their communities. Using a sample of 782 African American a

Processes of change in the adoption of consistent condom use.

Descriptions of reproductive and sexual behavior were obtained from interviews with a convenience sample of women at risk of HIV infection or transmission to assess whether the processes of change (POC) constructs from the Transtheoretical Model apply to women's explanations of condom behavior change. Participants were recruited from public housing, drug treatment centers, homeless shelters, and other sources. Interviews with 45 women were selected for analysis based on criteria of condom behavior change and narrative richness. In phase I, POC constructs were identified in women's statements r

On the role of dominance and nurturance in the confluence model: A person-centered approach to the prediction of sexual aggression.

Malamuth's (1998) confluence model holds that the combination of hostile masculinity, impersonal sexuality, and the constellation of high dominance and low nurturance plays a crucial role in explaining men's sexual aggression against women. Most studies on the confluence model concentrate on hostile masculinity and impersonal sexuality rather than dominance and nurturance. Using a person-centered approach, we investigated whether sexual aggressive men could be better identified in a sample of 692 men when not only hostile masculinity and impersonal sexuality but also dominance and nurturance w

Coumarins as natural aphrodisiacs: Mechanistic insights and future perspectives in male sexual health.

BACKGROUND: Male sexual dysfunction, particularly erectile dysfunction and reduced libido, affects a significant portion of the global male population. While synthetic drugs like phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors provide short-term relief, they often cause adverse effects. Natural alternatives, especially phytochemicals like coumarins, have shown promise as safer, multi-target solutions to erectile dysfunction. OBJECTIVES: This review aims to explore the aphrodisiac potential of coumarins by examining their chemical nature, natural sources, historical and cultural significance, mechanisms of act

Irisin Improves High-Fat Diet-Induced Sexual Dysfunction in Obese Male Rats.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity is known to cause sexual dysfunction including erectile dysfunction and poor semen quality. Lifestyle modifications such as exercise have increasingly been more recognized to lower the likelihood of having sexual dysfunction or infertility in obese men. In this context, as an exercise-mimetic hormone, irisin has a potential to improve obesity-related reproductive dysfunctions. We aimed to elucidate possible effects of irisin on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced reproductive dysfunction in obese male rats. METHODS: Rats were divided into four groups: vehicle, irisin, obese, and

Reactions of Boys and Girls to Sexual Abuse and to Sexual Encounters with Peers.

To understand the etiology and consequences of child sexual abuse it is important to study the victims' subjective reactions to such incidents. Because researchers have not been able to survey children about sexual abuse, not much is known about how subjective reactions are related to gender, age, age difference, and the social relationship between the offender and victim. The present study fills this gap using data gathered from a large, nationally representative sample of Finnish children ages 11 to 17 (N = 32,145). Analyses of abuse are based on a sample of 1520 children (78% girls), while

Social Stress and Substance Use Disparities by Sexual Orientation Among High School Students.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual minority youth often experience increased social stress due to prejudice, discrimination, harassment, and victimization. Increased stress may help explain the disproportionate use of substances like tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, and other illicit drug use by sexual minority youth. This study examined the effect of social stress on substance use disparities by sexual orientation among U.S. high school students. METHODS: In 2016, data from the national 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, conducted among a nationally representative sample of 15,624 U.S. high school students, wer

Stable marital relationship protects men from oral and genital HPV infections.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infections are associated with sexual behavior. Changes in the sexual habits of couples and their impact on male genital and oral HPV infections were determined during 7 years of follow-up (FU). At baseline and 7 years FU, urethral, semen/penile, and oral samples were collected from 46 men and cervical and oral samples of their spouses for HPV DNA detection. Demographic data and risk factors of spouses were recorded by questionnaire at both time points and analyzed for concordance. HPV genotyping was done with the Multimetrix® kit. At baseline, 29.5 % of the male gen

Role of estrogen in normal male function: clinical implications for patients with prostate cancer on androgen deprivation therapy.

PURPOSE: Patients with prostate cancer on androgen deprivation therapy with luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonists experience deleterious side effects, including sexual dysfunction, hot flashes and osteoporosis. Estrogen may relieve or reduce some of these side effects. We explore the role of estrogen in normal male function, emphasizing sexual interest and performance. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed the literature on androgen deprivation therapy, estrogen and sexual function in males using PubMed® and other sources. RESULTS: Estrogen receptors are present in tissues involved in

STD coinfections in The Netherlands: Specific sexual networks at highest risk.

BACKGROUND: Specific subpopulations infected with multiple bacterial sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) may facilitate ongoing STD transmission. To identify these subpopulations we determined the extent of concurrent incident STD infections and their risk factors among the high-risk population seen at Dutch STD clinics. METHODS: STD surveillance data submitted routinely by STD clinics to the National Institute for Public Health on demographics, sexual behavior, STD testing, and diagnoses for the period 2004-2007 were analyzed. RESULTS: Bacterial STD coinfections were diagnosed concurrently
