Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly aggressive subtype of breast cancer, known for its early onset, strong metastatic tendencies, and poor prognosis. Conventional treatments, including chemotherapy and immunotherapy, often face challenges such as limited efficacy, adverse side effects, and high recurrence rates. To address these limitations, a family of tri-block chimeric proteins, cysteine-tagged silk-elastin-like proteins (cSELPs), is designed to form responsive in situ hydrogels for treating late-stage and metastatic TNBC. These cSELPs are de novo designed to integrate multiple

Zinc (Zn) is a promising material for biodegradable implants due to its moderate corrosion rate and superior biocompatibility over magnesium (Mg) and iron (Fe). However, its poor fatigue performance limits broader applications. While nanoparticles were discovered to enhance the fatigue performance of metals, the mechanisms remain underexplored. This study investigates nanoparticle-enabled mechanisms for fatigue improvement in Zn. Specifically, the microstructure, tensile, and fatigue performance of pure Zn and Zn nanocomposites containing 1 vol. % and 2 vol. % titanium carbide (TiC) nanopartic

BACKGROUND: Articular cartilage has limited self-repair capacity. While thermoresponsive poly N-isopropyl acrylamide (pNIPAAm)-based Cell Sheet Engineering (CSE) is a promising scaffold-free strategy, its inherent material properties pose limitations. This study developed and validated a novel, non-thermoresponsive CSE platform for functional cartilage regeneration.
METHODS: A culture platform was fabricated by grafting the biocompatible polymer poly gamma-glutamic acid (γ-PGA) and a disulfide-containing amino acid onto porous PET membranes. This design enables intact cell sheet detachment wi

Black phosphorus (BP), as a representative metal-free semiconductor, has been extensively explored. It has a higher drug loading capacity in comparison to conventional materials and also possesses excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability. Furthermore, BP nanosheets can enhance the permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) upon near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, owing to their photothermal effect. However, the inherent instability of BP poses a significant limitation, highlighting the importance of surface modification to enhance its stability. Ischemic stroke (IS) is caused by the occ

INTRODUCTION: The photo-activated thermo/gas antimicrobial nanocomposite hydrogel, Gel/PDA@BNN6, is composed of the nitric oxide (NO) carrier N, N'-di-sec-butyl-N, N'-dinitroso-p-phenylenediamine (BNN6), photothermal (PTT) material polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA NPs), and methacrylate gelatin (GelMA). This hydrogel can release NO gas in a stable and controlled manner, generating a localized photothermal effect when exposed to near-infrared laser light. This dual action promotes the healing of full-thickness skin wounds that are infected.
METHODS: Gel/PDA@BNN6 was developed, and both in vitro

BACKGROUND: Biocompatible MIL-100 (Fe), a metal organic framework material, has recently attracted increasing attention in biomedical engineering. The high surface area, pore volume, and accessible Lewis acid sites make MIL-100 (Fe) a proper candidate for hydrophobic anticancer drug loading and storage. In this study, a novel investigation of cyclophosphamide (CP) -loaded MIL-100(Fe) (MIL- 100(Fe)/CP) and a simulation of drug loading at a molecular level is presented.
METHODS: This research used a facile synthesis method to prepare MIL-100(Fe), which addresses the high temperature and pressur

The electric stimulation (ES) of the cornea is a novel therapeutic approach to the treatment of degenerative visual diseases. Currently, ES is delivered by placing a mono-element electrode on the surface of the cornea that uniformly stimulates the eye along the electrode site. It has been reported that a certain degree of correlation exists between the location of the stimulated retinal area and the position of the electrode. Therefore, in this study, we present the development of a sectioned surface electrode for selective electric stimulation of the human cornea. The proposed device consists

Diatom microalgae are a natural source of fossil biosilica shells, namely the diatomaceous earth (DE), abundantly available at low cost. High surface area, mesoporosity and biocompatibility, as well as the availability of a variety of approaches for surface chemical modification, make DE highly profitable as a nanostructured material for drug delivery applications. Despite this, the studies reported so far in the literature are generally limited to the development of biohybrid systems for drug delivery by oral or parenteral administration. Here we demonstrate the suitability of diatomaceous ea

Demineralized bone matrix (DBM) is a decalcified allo/xenograft retaining collagen and noncollagenous proteins, which has been extensively used because of its osteoconductive and osteoinductive properties. Calcium sulfate (CaSO4, CS) is a synthetic bone substitute used in bone healing with biocompatible, nontoxic, bioabsorbable, osteoconductive, and good mechanical characteristics. This study aims to prepare a DBM/CS composite bone graft material in a moldable putty form without compromising the peculiar properties of DBM and CS. For this purpose, firstly, porcine femur was defatted using chlo

BACKGROUND: Respiratory mucosa defects result in airway obstruction and infection, requiring subsequent functional recovery of the respiratory epithelium. Because site-specific extracellular matrix (ECM) facilitates restoration of organ function by promoting cellular migration and engraftment, previous studies considered decellularized trachea an ideal ECM; however, incomplete cell removal from cartilage and mucosal-architecture destruction are frequently reported. Here, we developed a decellularization protocol and applied it to the respiratory mucosa of separated porcine tracheas.

Surgical adhesives are an attractive alternative to traditional mechanical tissue fixation methods of sutures and staples. Ease of application, biocompatibility, enhanced functionality (drug delivery) are known advantages but weak adhesion strength in the wet environment and lack of tissue compliant behavior still pose a challenge. In order to address these issues, non-aqueous bioadhesive based on blends of polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer, conjugated with 4-[3-(trifluoromethyl)-3H-diazirin-3-yl] benzyl bromide (PAMAM-g-diazirine) and liquid polyethylene glycol (PEG 400) has been developed. In the field of wound healing, stem cell-based strategies are gaining importance for their regenerative potential. Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) are a particular subset of mesenchymal stem cells present in the stromal-vascular fraction of the adipose tissue, today considered very attractive for their relative abundance and accessibility in the human body. However, ADSCs are still not routinely used in normal clinical practice. Several studies have also reported ADSC transplantation in association with biomaterials in an attempt to enhance the local retention and growth rate of the cells.

Glucocorticoids-induced osteonecrosis of femoral head (GIONFH) is difficult to treat due to the pathophysiology remains uncertain. Core decompression and bone grafting are regarded as effective measures for treating early GIONFH. Furthermore, commonly used bone graft materials at nowadays are still unsatisfactory. We generated a novel calcium polyphosphate (CPP) composite scaffold, which contains Li and VEGF-loaded gelatin microspheres (LiCPP/GMs/VEGF). The LiCPP/GMs/VEGF scaffold also demonstrated a porosity of 70.5% ± 2.3% with interconnected porous structures, and pore sizes of 100-200 μm a

Neuroma formation after amputation as a long-term deficiency leads to spontaneous neuropathic pain that reduces quality of life of patients. To prevent neuroma formation, capping techniques are implemented as effective treatments. However, an ideal, biocompatible material covering the nerves is an unmet clinical need. In this study, biocompatible characteristics presented by the poly(D,L-lactic acid)/arginylglycylaspartic acid (RGD peptide) modification of poly{(lactic acid)-co- [(glycolic acid)-alt-(L-lysine)]} (PRGD/PDLLA) are evaluated as a nerve conduit. Osteoporosis greatly impairs bone fracture restoration with bone cement because the accelerated resorption decreases the osseointegration between bone and implants. In this study, we designed a new drug delivery system based on the third generation bisphosphonate risedronate (RA) and the osteogenic calcium phosphate silicate cement (CPSC). The impact of RA on CPSC's material properties and microstructure was evaluated by different characterization methods (μCT, XRD, FTIR, SEM and gas sorption). In addition, in vitro biocompatibility of RA-added CPSC was evaluated (MTT assay, flow cytometry, re
