Enhancing the diagnostic specificity of exercise ECG testing in obstructive coronary artery disease: the role of the Selvester QRS score.

BACKGROUND: Exercise ECG testing is a widely used, noninvasive tool for detecting obstructive coronary artery disease (OCAD). However, its diagnostic performance is often limited by low specificity, leading to false-positive results and unnecessary invasive procedures. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the potential of combining the Selvester QRS score with exercise ECG to enhance diagnostic specificity for OCAD in patients with suspected stable angina. METHODS: This retrospective study included 203 patients who presented with chest pain, underwent exercise ECG and were assessed for OCAD

Classification of Opioid Usage Through Semi-Supervised Learning for Total Joint Replacement Patients.

Opioid misuse and overdose have become a public health hazard and caused drug addiction and death in the United States due to rapid increase in prescribed and non-prescribed opioid usage. The misuse and overdose are highly related to opioid over-prescription for chronic and acute pain treatment, where a one-size-fits-all prescription plan is often adopted but can lead to substantial leftovers for patients who only consume a few. To reduce over-prescription and opioid overdose, each patient's opioid usage pattern should be taken into account. As opioids are often prescribed for patients after t

Using deep learning for estimation of time-since-injury in pediatric accidental fractures.

BACKGROUND: Estimating time-since-injury of healing fractures is imprecise, encompassing excessively wide timeframes. Most injured children are evaluated at non-children's hospitals, yet pediatric radiologists can disagree with up to one in six skeletal imaging interpretations from referring community hospitals. There is a need to improve image interpretation by considering additional methods for fracture dating. OBJECTIVE: To train and validate deep learning models to correctly estimate the age of pediatric accidental long bone fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This secondary data analysis

Liver Organoids: Recent Developments, Limitations and Potential.

Liver cell types derived from induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) share the potential to investigate development, toxicity, as well as genetic and infectious disease in ways currently limited by the availability of primary tissue. With the added advantage of patient specificity, which can play a role in all of these areas. Many iPSC differentiation protocols focus on 3 dimensional (3D) or organotypic differentiation, as these offer the advantage of more closely mimicking in vivo systems including; the formation of tissue like architecture and interactions/crosstalk between different cell ty

A method for patient-specific evaluation of vertebral cancellous bone strength: in vitro validation.

BACKGROUND: In the context of osteoporosis, important determinants of the fracture risk are the apparent strength and stiffness of cancellous bone, as well as its brittleness and energy absorption capacity. Standard medical imaging, however, cannot measure these mechanical properties directly. Consequently, an estimation of the risk for fracture is made by correlating relative density or mineral density at a skeletal site with statistics of fracture occurrence, which provides limited and partial indications on fracture risks. A better method for evaluating the patient-specific mechanical prope

Cancer-specific mortality in high-risk or very high-risk prostate cancer patients treated with focal therapy vs. radical prostatectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Focal therapy (FT) in high-risk or very high-risk prostate cancer (CaP) is not guideline-recommended. However, it may be occasionally used, but its effect on cancer-specific mortality (CSM) relative to standard treatment options such as radical prostatectomy (RP) is unknown and was addressed in the present study. METHODS: In the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (2010-2022), high-risk or very high-risk CaP patients according to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines, treated with either FT or RP, were identified. A multivariable log

Collagen deposition in the subcutaneous tissue during wound healing in humans: a model evaluation.

Wound healing encompasses coagulation, inflammation, angiogenesis, fibroplasia, contraction, epithelialisation and remodeling. A granulation tissue is produced following incision of tissue such as skin, abdominal wall or the gastrointestinal tract, and the strength of the wound is determined primarily by the collagen content early in the healing course. Few models are available to study wound healing in man. The percutaneous insertion of expanded poly-tetrafluoroethylene tubes (ePTFE) into the subcutaneous tissue has been an established model for 20 years. The procedure is performed using a lo

Effects of inspiratory waveform, inspiratory time, and pause on compartmental energy partitioning in a heterogeneous two-compartment respiratory model.

In mechanically heterogeneous respiratory systems, the temporal pattern of inspiratory flow may influence how airway-opening work is partitioned between mechanically distinct compartments, independently of global mechanical power (MP). Using a simplified time-resolved two-compartment model with common airway-opening pressure, we investigated whether inspiratory waveform, inspiratory time, and end-inspiratory pause affect model-derived compartmental airway-level energy routing, including cases matched for global MP. Mechanical heterogeneity was introduced by varying compliance and resistance ra
