The clinical, radiological and biochemical findings in a black girl with a rare, inherited mucopolysaccharide storage disease, Sanfilippo's syndrome (mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) III) type C, are described. A disease syndrome characterized by abnormal feathering and varus deviation of the tarsometatarsus spontaneously occurred in pheasant chicks fed a practical commercially prepared diet. The addition of supplemental Zn to the commercial diet was effective in alleviating the clinical signs, even though the commercial mix had Zn levels that met the published pheasant chick requirement. Supplemental arginine was ineffective in reducing the severity of the clinical signs. Previous studies suggest that growth hormone (GH) may increase daily zinc requirements to meet the demand of growing bone and to replace increased urinary losses. We tested the hypothesis that zinc or copper availability might be limiting factors in the response of children receiving GH replacement. Ten patients with GH deficiency were followed for GH-induced changes in urine and serum zinc and copper during acute (0.3 IU/kg/day X 5 days) and chronic GH treatment (0.1 IU/kg/tiw). A pregnant patient developed fulminant polymyositis with myoglobinuria after terbutaline and magnesium sulfate tocolysis. Her response to prednisone was dramatic. Rapid relapse occurred after inadvertent postcesarean dose reduction. Our patient again responded to increased prednisone. She and her twin babies are well.

Necrosis in chronic leg ulcers developed in all of the four patients who were treated topically with a fluocinolone acetonide-neomycin sulfate ointment. This was probably due to the vasoconstrictive properties of the steroid. A warning against the topical use of potent steroids in skin diseases with impaired circulation seems to be justified.

A simple and effective anion ion chromatography (IC) method with anion exchange column and conductivity detector has been developed to determine free sulfites (SO3-2) in dried fruits processed with sulfur dioxide.
