[Rupture of the pericardium caused by closed thoracic injuries].

Rupture of the pericardium due to closed thoracic trauma is a very rare event which is hard to diagnose. It occurs in the form of two main clinical pictures: 1) severe chest trauma with massive haematoma requiring surgery and which permits diagnosis, and 2) precordial pain and clinical signs of pericardiac origin. Surgery is essential in view of the risk of lethal complications from cardia luxation. Operation consists of closure of the pericardiac lesion.

[Electrocochleographic potential pattern, recorded by different pick-ups (author's transl)].

At electrocochleography, the active electrode was placed on the earlobe, the mastoid, the nasopharynx, the hard palate and the external ear-canal respectively. It could be shown that the potential pattern, consisting of five components, during the first 8 msec after the click-onset could be obtained from all the above mentioned sites. In relation to the various electrode pick-ups we obtained different amplitude functions with nearly the same latency behaviour for all five potentials.

Pump Versus Syringe: Aspiration Thrombectomy Direct Pressure Comparisons in a Comprehensive Benchtop 3-Dimensional-Printed Circle of Willis Model.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Experiments have shown that 60-cc syringes generate stronger vacuum forces than mechanical pumps. However, few studies have measured catheter tip suction pressure during thrombus engagement. Therefore, this study aimed to compare aspiration forces and pressure drops, generated by mechanical pumps and 60-cc syringes connected to various catheters when aspirating synthetic clots in a 3-dimensional-printed model. METHODS: The system includes a programmable pulsatile pump, a 3-dimensional-printed tissue-matched circle of Willis model, radiopaque synthetic blood clots po

Compliant buffer layer achieves native-like cartilage stress in talar prosthesis: a finite element analysis study.

BACKGROUND: Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the talus presents considerable clinical challenges and is frequently associated with poor treatment outcomes. While 3D-printed customized talar prosthesis has shown promising potential in total talar replacement (TTR), current materials create a hard-soft mismatch with native cartilage, increasing local stress, accelerating wear, and causing complications. The objective of this study was to identify the most suitable combination of buffering layer material and thickness for talar prosthesis. METHODS: This study employed dynamic biplane radiography (DBR

Evaluation of feline heartworm disease based on gross necropsy, serology, pulmonary histopathology, and radiographic evidence in adult shelter cats in northeastern Alabama.

BACKGROUND: Veterinary knowledge regarding feline heartworm has been increasing significantly over the past two decades. Necropsy surveys of shelter cats have shown feline adult heartworm infection prevalence to be 5-20% of the rate in unprotected dogs; however, other studies have shown feline heartworm antibody prevalence up to 33%, reflecting higher exposure rates and potential immature adult infections. Thus, the true prevalence of feline heartworm infection is likely underestimated due to the limitations of current diagnostic techniques, inadequate testing protocols, and the high likelihoo

The clarifying role of time series data in the population genetics of HIV.

HIV can evolve remarkably quickly in response to antiretroviral therapies and the immune system. This evolution stymies treatment effectiveness and prevents the development of an HIV vaccine. Consequently, there has been a great interest in using population genetics to disentangle the forces that govern the HIV adaptive landscape (selection, drift, mutation, and recombination). Traditional population genetics approaches look at the current state of genetic variation and infer the processes that can generate it. However, because HIV evolves rapidly, we can also sample populations repeatedly ove

Evaluation of Naturalistic Driving Behavior Using In-Vehicle Monitoring Technology in Preclinical and Early Alzheimer's Disease.

Cognitive impairment is a significant risk factor for hazardous driving among older drivers with Alzheimer's dementia, but little is known about how the driving behavior of mildly symptomatic compares with those in the preclinical, asymptomatic phase of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study utilized two in-car technologies to characterize driving behavior in symptomatic and preclinical AD. The goals of this pilot study were to (1) describe unsafe driving behaviors in individuals with symptomatic early AD using G-force triggered video capture and (2) compare the driving habits of these symptomat

Novel method for reduction of virus load in blood plasma by sonication.

BACKGROUND: Aim of the present study is the evaluation of ultrasound as a physical method for virus inactivation in human plasma products prior to transfusion. Our study is focused on achieving a high level of virus inactivation simultaneously leaving blood products unaltered, measured by the level of degradation of coagulation factors, especially in third world countries where virus contamination of blood products poses a major problem. Virus inactivation plays an important role, especially in the light of newly discovered or unknown viruses, which cannot be safely excluded via prior testing.

A pulseless limb poorly predicts an arterial injury in combat trauma.

BACKGROUND: A pulseless limb is considered a hard sign of an arterial injury after penetrating trauma in the civilian population. However, the reliability of this finding has never been examined in combat trauma. The purpose of this study was to examine the reliability of the pulseless limb in the combat trauma population. Reasons for false positive physical examination findings were also identified. METHODS: The Joint Theater Trauma Registry identified all patients who presented to a military treatment facility (MTF) in Kandahar, Afghanistan, with a penetrating extremity injury over a 2-year

Diagnosis and management of evacuated casualties with cervical vascular injuries resulting from combat-related explosive blasts.

BACKGROUND: Explosive blasts are common in the modern military environment. These blasts incorporate a concussive component (primary blast injury) and a penetrating component (secondary blast injury). Penetrating injuries are the leading cause of death and injury in these attacks. This review characterizes the vascular injuries associated with penetrating blast injuries to the neck and provides recommendations on the early management of these casualties for the surgeon unfamiliar with these injuries. METHODS: The Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Trauma Registry was queried for admissions fro
