Changes in delayed sleep patterns and related clinical factors in a social restriction environment.

We aimed to investigate which factors, including socioenvironmental factors and emotional regulation, were associated with pronounced delayed sleep patterns during the COVID-19 social restriction. We evaluated 744 adults aged 20-65 y using a web-based survey with a self-reported questionnaire in May 2022. Based on the survey, we estimated the mid-sleep time on free days corrected for oversleeping on free days (MSFsc) and social jet lag (SJL). We determined delayed sleep patterns using ΔMSFsc, which was defined as the difference between MSFsc during the pre- and mid-pandemic. The high-risk grou

"No rest for me tonight": A social-ecological exploration of insomnia in rural Appalachian women.

OBJECTIVES: Insomnia disproportionally affects women and is prevalent among rural Appalachian adults at higher rates than in the general US population. Given the strong, bi-directional relationship between sleep and health, a better understanding of insomnia in this health-disparate population is critical. The present study focused on the sex (females), gender (women), and age group (45+) at highest insomnia risk and explores the social determinants of sleep that contributed to insomnia. METHODS: Semistructured telephone interviews were conducted to understand factors associated with insomnia

Social well-being moderates behavioral therapy response for generalized anxiety disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Identifying moderators of treatment outcome for depression and anxiety offers promise for personalizing treatment or providing novel intervention targets. Indices of social well-being have emerged as candidate moderators due to their robust impact on mental health and quality of life. Here, we examine whether measures of social support, isolation, and loneliness moderate outcomes to behavioral activation (BA) and exposure-based therapy (EXP) for individuals with GAD. METHODS: This secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial included 69 participants (31 EXP, 38 BA). Partici

Continuity in social communication development among school-aged siblings of autistic children.

Prospective studies of later born siblings of autistic individuals often focus on predicting autism diagnosis. Studies concentrating on siblings who do not develop autism have found subclinical atypicalities in some children as early as the first year of life. However, when followed to school-age, the continuity of these findings has been mixed. We tracked nonautistic siblings (n = 151 higher familial likelihood of autism, n = 115 lower likelihood) longitudinally from infancy to 6-16 years of age when participants completed a battery of social communication measures (parent report and direct o

Fine social discrimination of siblings in mice: Implications for early detection of Alzheimer's disease.

The ability to distinguish between individuals is crucial for social species and supports behaviors such as reproduction, hierarchy formation, and cooperation. In rodents, social discrimination relies on memory and the recognition of individual-specific cues, known as "individual signatures". While olfactory signals are central, other sensory cues - such as auditory, visual, and tactile inputs - also play a role. However, little research has explored the fine discrimination of individuals with overlapping cues, such as siblings or cohabitating mice. This study investigates whether mice can dis

Responsive social support to disclosures of racial discrimination: Expectations and implications for well-being.

OBJECTIVES: Social support helps people of color (POC) cope with stressors such as racial discrimination. Yet when POC disclose lived experiences of racism, confidants may fail to provide support that meets disclosers' emotional needs. Drawing on theories of shared reality and emotion reappraisal, we compare two emotion-focused social support approaches: validation (conveying that recipients' feelings or responses are appropriate) and reframing (seeking to reduce recipients' distress by offering a more positive perspective). METHOD: Two POC samples of Canadian young adults (35% South Asian, 3

[Brief history of laboratory-based epidemiological surveillance in the Mexican Institute for Social Security].

Epidemiological surveillance of communicable diseases has had a cross-cutting role that has contributed to scientific advancement, knowledge generation, and, above all, to organizing and focusing public health and medical care activities in the country. We refer to laboratory-based epidemiological surveillance. In this regard, the Mexican Institute for Social Security (IMSS according to its initials in Spanish) has not fallen short of expectations with the creation of a network of laboratories for laboratory-based epidemiological surveillance in different states, with recognition of their tech

Problematic social media use and inhibitory control among post-secondary students.

INTRODUCTION: Problematic social media use (PSMU) parallels traditional characteristics of substance use disorders, including salience, functional impairment, and tolerance. An excessive focus on social reward and engaging in negative behaviors on social media may decrease certain executive functions. However, the role of how inhibitory control processes manifest in PSMU are not well understood. The current study aims to explore both the presence of inhibitory control impairments and harmful online behaviors, such as negative social comparison, in problematic social media use. METHODS: A popu

Exploring the Information Shared on Social Media With Parents of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children.

This qualitative textual analysis explores the information shared on a social media group for parents of deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) children. The authors sought to investigate the type of information parents of DHH children are seeking and receiving from a community on social media related to their child's development. A thematic analysis was conducted on one month's worth of content from the group, and six major themes emerged from participants' posts and threaded comments. These emerging themes and accompanying subthemes provide insight into the immediate needs of parents of DHH children

Rumor management in public health: a system dynamics analysis based on social trust.

BACKGROUND: With the rapid development of digital society and the Internet, public health systems are increasingly confronted with novel phenomena and emergent challenges originating from cyberspace. Single medical interventions often prove insufficient to address the complex and multifaceted nature of contemporary health issues, necessitating the integration of interdisciplinary expertise. METHODS: This study focuses on the propagation mechanisms of online rumors during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting their intricate interactions with social trust. Analysis of risk factors of social frailty in older adults living with HIV/AIDS.

As a predictor of mortality, accidental disability, depressive symptoms, and other adverse outcomes in the older population, social frailty has yet to receive attention among older adults living with HIV/AIDS. Therefore, this study, using Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) and Random Forest (RF), aims to analyze the current status and risk factors of social frailty in older adults living with HIV/AIDS and provides a basis for its prevention and reversal. From January to December 2024, a total of 335 older adults living with HIV/AIDS (≥ 50 years old) receiving outpatient tr

Social patterns of miscarriage reporting and risk: insights from survey data in France.

Miscarriages, which are spontaneous pregnancy losses before 20-28 weeks of gestation, affect approximately 15% of recognized pregnancies. Existing population-based evidence of social inequalities in miscarriage risk is inconsistent, partly due to a lack of data. Surveys can be representative of a national population but are subject to underreporting of miscarriages. We examine whether miscarriages are underreported in a French nationally representative survey, FECOND (2010-11), and analyse socioeconomic risk factors for miscarriage. First, we apply a model that estimates miscarriage underrepor

Tasks to Establish the Role of Hospice and Palliative Care Social Workers in Community Care.

In 2018, the South Korean government launched a community care policy aimed at providing more extensive social services for older adults, the disabled, and mental health patients. This policy also included an expansion of home-based hospice services in response to the growing demand for hospice and palliative care. Despite these initiatives, social workers play a limited role in home-based hospice care, and those specializing in hospice and palliative care are not yet fully equipped to provide effective community care services. This study investigated both domestic and international research t
