BACKGROUND: Acute coronary artery obstruction is a rare but lethal complication of surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR), which may be caused by embolization of resected native tissue such as calcium plaque, thrombus, or perivalvular aortic tissue like fat embolus. Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) are the main treatment modalities. PCI is less invasive, but it is difficult to determine its feasibility intraoperatively.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report an 86-year-old woman who had asymptomatic severe aortic stenosis. She had scleroderma with an

BACKGROUND: Tracheobronchial injuries caused by blunt chest trauma are rare in children, and such injuries usually involve multiple organs. Most cases involve respiratory failure on the way to the hospital, and the mortality rate is high. Herein, we describe the case of a 5-year-old patient who fell from an electric vehicle, causing complete rupture of the bilateral main bronchus.
CASE PRESENTATION: We treated a 5-year-old patient with complete bilateral main bronchus rupture. Chest computed tomography (CT) failed to detect bronchial rupture. Continuous closed thoracic drainage resulted in a

Since its first implementation, minimally invasive cardiac surgery has become more and more popular among surgeons. By avoiding a complete opening of the sternum, this surgery is traditionally associated with a faster recovery, less surgical pain and less postoperative bleeding and transfusions. With its growing popularity, the need for specifically designed surgical instrumentation is evident. Since 2008, the detachable-branch Glauber clamp (Cardiovision-Trytech, Tokyo, Japan) has been used to facilitate aortic cross-clamp during minimally invasive cardiac surgery, to optimize the intraoperat

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is estimated to account for 4.1% of all new cancer diagnoses and 2.4% of all cancer deaths in 2020 according to the National Cancer Institute SEER database. This will likely total 73,000 new cases and 15,000 deaths. RCC is one of the most lethal of the common cancers urologists will encounter with a 5-year relative survival of 75.2%. Renal cell carcinoma is one of a small subset of malignancies that are associated with tumor thrombus formation, which is tumor extension into a blood vessel. An estimated 4% to 10% of patients with RCC will have some degree of tumor thr

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune diseases can coexist with immunodeficiency. We describe a treatment approach in which granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) is used to restore immune competence without worsening autoimmunity. G-CSF is a polyfunctional cytokine that influences survival, proliferation, and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells, and has immunomodulatory effects on the innate and adaptive immune systems.
OBJECTIVE: To report a case of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) with comorbid immunodeficiency and frequent infections.
METHODS: Case report and review of lite

BACKGROUND: At present, minimally invasive radical esophagectomy is the main surgical method for esophageal cancer treatment, but it has inherent limitations. We have developed a novel method of radical esophagectomy without thoracotomy to improve this situation, namely, by using EMLE. We evaluated the feasibility and safety of expandable mediastinoscopic and laparoscopic radical esophagectomy (EMLE) through a retrospective analysis.
METHODS: From January 2019 to June 2022, we successfully performed 106 cases of radical resection of esophageal cancer with this new surgical technique, graduall

RATIONALE: Ganglioneuroma (GN) is a rare tumor that originates from neural crest cells and can manifest in any location along the sympathetic chain. It typically exhibits a circular or oval shape and does not invade the surrounding tissue destructively and the enormous lobular appearance and erosion of adjacent skeletal tissues are extremely infrequent among GN.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 15-year-old girl presented to our thoracic surgery clinic with a large intrathoracic mass that was incidentally discovered on a chest X-ray. Further imaging with computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging r

Tension pneumothorax is a relatively rare complication after anesthetic induction that requires prompt diagnosis and treatment. Several handling errors related to intubation procedures or equipment and vigorous positive pressure ventilation are potentially important etiologies of tension pneumothorax in patients with underlying lung disease or in mechanically ventilated patients. We describe a case of tension pneumothorax observed after double-lumen tube (DLT) insertion followed by single-lumen tube replacement using an airway exchanger catheter in a mechanically ventilated patient. An 84-year

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Impalement injuries are those injuries that result from the injuring object or weapon being stuck on to the victim's body parts. Such cases occur rarely and when they do they pose a great challenge starting from transportation to anesthesia induction and surgical decision. The extremities are the commonest parts of the body where this occurs. Only a few reports of thoracic impalement injuries have been documented in the literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: Here we present a case of a 25 years old male patient who presented 36 hours after sustaining an impalement injury

BACKGROUND: Thoracoscopic repair of esophageal atresia (EA) with tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is becoming an increasingly widespread technique; there is still controversy about its indication in certain patients. Our objective is to analyze if potential risk factors such as major congenital heart disease (CHD) or low birth weight (LBW) are a limitation to this approach.
METHODS: Retrospective study (2017-2021) of patients with EA and distal TEF who underwent thoracoscopic repair were included. Patients with LBW less than 2,000 g or major CHD were compared with the rest.
RESULTS: Twenty-fi

BACKGROUND: Spinal ankylosing disorders (SADs) refer to a group of conditions resulting in spontaneous or postsurgical ossification and fusion of the spinal segments. The spine becomes increasingly susceptible to injury over time such that even low-energy trauma can cause a spinal injury. We report two cases of SADs, associated with massive thoracic hemorrhage.
CASE PRESENTATION: The first patient was an 85-year-old male, who suffered from a vehicular crash. He was diagnosed with a fracture of the first lumbar vertebra, accompanied by SADs. Intubation was required, and thoracic drainage tubes

The bronchogenic cyst (BC) is a type of congenital anomaly that is most usually found in the mediastinum and lung, and rarely in the diaphragm. We report two cases of bronchogenic cysts originating from the left diaphragm. Case 1 involved a 50-year-old man who underwent computed tomography (CT) of the adrenal glands for hypertension, showing left adrenal changes. An adrenal CT at our hospital showed a space-occupying lesion above the left diaphragm. We performed a left-sided thoracotomy in the seventh intercostal space and found that the mass was entirely located in the diaphragm. Case 2 was a

Ten cases of basaloid squamous cell carcinomas of the thymus are presented. The patients are 6 women and 4 men ranging in ages between 51 and 72 years (average: 61.5 y), who presented with nonspecific symptoms of cough, dyspnea, and chest pain with no history of malignancy, myasthenia gravis, or other autoimmune disease. Surgical resection of the mediastinal masses via thoracotomy or sternotomy was performed in all patients. Grossly, the tumors varied in size from 2 to 8 cm, were light tan in color, solid and slightly hemorrhagic, and had infiltrative borders. Histologically, scanning magnific

BACKGROUND: Fontan surgery, a palliative procedure for single ventricle patients, often leads to the need for permanent pacing. Epicardial pacing has limitations, while transvenous pacing carries risks in the Fontan circulation. This case series introduces a novel approach of leadless pacemaker implantation in the extra-cardiac Fontan (ECF) cohort to overcome these limitations.
METHODS: The study includes four cases of leadless pacemaker (Micra™) implantation in patients with ECF. Procedures were performed under general anesthesia with guidance from trans-esophageal echocardiography. Various

Two cases of primary follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS) of the pleura are presented. The patients are a woman 76-years-old and a man 64-years-old who presented with nonspecific symptoms including chest pain, dyspnea, and cough. Clinical history did not disclose any pertinent history of previous malignancy. Diagnostic imaging showed the presence of a pleural-based mass in both patients and a thoracotomy with resection of the pleural mass was performed. Both tumors were described as solid, light tan, and with ill-defined borders. Histologically, both tumors showed similar histological feat
