Effect of mass deworming with antihelminthics for soil-transmitted helminths during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Helminthiasis is an infestation of the human body with parasitic worms. It is estimated to affect 44 million pregnancies, globally, each year. Intestinal helminthiasis (hookworm infestation) is associated with blood loss and decreased supply of nutrients for erythropoiesis, resulting in iron-deficiency anaemia. Over 50% of the pregnant women in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) suffer from iron-deficiency anaemia. Though iron-deficiency anaemia is multifactorial, hookworm infestation is a major contributory cause in women of reproductive age in endemic areas. Antihelminthics

Structural and community-level interventions for increasing condom use to prevent the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

BACKGROUND: Community interventions to promote condom use are considered to be a valuable tool to reduce the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). In particular, special emphasis has been placed on implementing such interventions through structural changes, a concept that implies public health actions that aim to improve society's health through modifications in the context wherein health-related risk behavior takes place. This strategy attempts to increase condom use and in turn lower the transmission of HIV and other STIs. OBJEC

Treatment Decision Making at Diagnosis for Children Presenting With Advanced Cancer in Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

PurposeAlthough most children diagnosed with cancer live in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), research exploring decision making in these settings remains sparse. When children present with advanced cancer in LMICs, local centers may lack resources to provide treatment required to achieve cure. Existing treatment guidelines often do not account for contextual and resource variations influencing decision making. This qualitative study sought to understand physician approaches to treatment decision making for children presenting with advanced cancer at diagnosis in LMICs.MethodsSemistruc

Health and economic impact of caregiving on informal caregivers of people with chronic diseases in sub-Saharan Africa: A systematic review.

With a disproportionate burden of chronic diseases and severe shortage of health workers in sub-Saharan Africa, the region implicitly relies on informal caregivers (ICGs) to support the patients both within and outside the health facilities. The aim of this review is to systematically summarise evidence on the health and economic impact of caregiving on informal caregivers of patients with chronic diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. Medline (Ovid), CINAHL (EBSCOhost), PsycINFO (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), Global Health, and Web of Science databases were systematically searched to identify original artic

Epstein-Barr Virus Promotes Tumorigenicity and Worsens Hodgkin Lymphoma Prognosis by Activating JAK/STAT and NF-κB Signaling Pathways.

BACKGROUND: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is detected in 40% of patients with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). During latency, EBV induces epigenetic alterations to the host genome and decreases the expression of pro-apoptotic proteins. The present study aimed to evaluate the expression levels of mRNA molecules and the end product of proteins for the JAK/STAT and NF-κB pathways, and their association with clinicopathological and prognostic parameters in patients with EBV-positive and -negative classical Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL). METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted from 2017 to 2022 at the Facult

Asthma symptoms, severity, and control with and without a clinical diagnosis of asthma in early adolescence in sub-Saharan Africa: a multi-country, school-based, cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Rapid urbanisation and population growth in sub-Saharan Africa has increased the incidence of asthma in children and adolescents. One major barrier to achieving good asthma control in these adolescents is obtaining a clinical diagnosis. To date, there are scant data on prevalence and severity of asthma in undiagnosed yet symptomatic adolescents. We therefore aimed to assess symptom prevalence and severity, the effect of symptoms on daily life, and objective evidence of asthma in young adolescents from sub-Saharan Africa with and without a clinical diagnosis of asthma by spirometry

Healthcare workers' perceptions and experiences of primary healthcare integration: a scoping review of qualitative evidence.

BACKGROUND: Primary healthcare (PHC) integration has been promoted globally as a tool for health sector reform and universal health coverage (UHC), especially in low-resource settings. However, for a range of reasons, implementation and impact remain variable. PHC integration, at its simplest, can be considered a way of delivering PHC services together that sometimes have been delivered as a series of separate or 'vertical' health programmes. Healthcare workers are known to shape the success of implementing reform interventions. Understanding healthcare worker perceptions and experiences of PH

Cancer medicines: a private vice for public benefit?

Cancer medicines have become one of the most dominant global medical technologies. They generate huge profits for the biopharmaceutical industry as well as fuel the research and advocacy activities of public funders, patient organisations, clinical and scientific communities and entire federal political ecosystems. The mismatch between the price, affordability and value of many cancer medicines and global need has generated significant policy debate, yet we see little change in behaviours from any of the major actors from public research funders through to regulatory authorities. In this polic
