[Inflammatory verrucous epidermal nevus (IVEN)].

From the original description of Altman and Mehregan (1971) a new clinical type of linear nevus is known as inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus (ILVEN). Two girls of 5 and 4 years of age are reported. One of them had good therapeutical results with the use of trichloroacetic acid. The clinical and histopathological aspects of this nevus are reviewed and the differential diagnosis should be done with: lichen planus, lichen striatus, linear psoriasis, zoniform dermatitis, naevus unius lateris.

Association of polymorphisms in Th1/Th2-related cytokines (IFN-γ, TGFβ1, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-18) with oral lichen planus: A pooled analysis of case-control studies.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Increasing evidence suggests that single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in Th1/Th2-related cytokine genes correlated with oral lichen planus (OLP) susceptibility. However, these results were inconsistent and inconclusive. Hence, the aim of this study is to draw a more precise estimation of the genetic associations between SNPs in 6 cytokines (IFN-γ, IL-18, TGFβ1, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4) and OLP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted to identify all eligible case-control studies on the association between SNPs in 6 cytokines and OLP susceptibility.

Where do you live? North versus Central-South differences in relation to Italian patients with oral lichen planus: a cross-sectional study from the SIPMO (Italian Society of Oral Pathology and Medicine).

BACKGROUND: Oral lichen planus (OLP) is an immune-mediated inflammatory chronic disease of the oral mucosa, with different patterns of clinical manifestations which range from keratotic manifestations (K-OLP) to predominantly non-keratotic lesions (nK-OLP). The aim of the study was to analyze the differences in the clinical, psychological profile and symptoms between Italian patients of the North and Central-South with K-OLP and nK-OLP. METHODS: 270 K-OLP and 270 nK-OLP patients were recruited in 15 Italian universities. The Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Total Pain Rating Index (T-PRI), Hamilto

Comparison of the distribution and numbers of antigen-presenting cells among T-lymphocyte-mediated dermatoses: CD1a+, factor XIIIa+, and CD68+ cells in eczematous dermatitis, psoriasis, lichen planus and graft-versus-host disease.

Antigen-presenting cells (APCs) participate in the initiation of the inflammatory process in various immune-mediated dermatoses through the activation of antigen-specific T lymphocytes. The skin contains several different subsets of APCs. To investigate the role of these APCs in T-cell immune-mediated inflammation, we examined the distribution and numbers of epidermal and dermal CD1a(+) dendritic cells (DCs), factor XIIIa(+) dermal DCs, and CD68(+) macrophages in five T-cell-mediated inflammatory skin diseases. Immunohistochemistry of CD1a, factor XIIIa, and CD68 was performed using paraffin-e

Vulvar and perianal condyloma superimposed inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus: a case report and review of the literature.

Inflammatory linear verrucous epidermal nevus (ILVEN) is a benign cutaneous hamartoma characterized by intensely erythematous, pruritic, and inflammatory papules that occur as linear bands along the lines of Blaschko. There is a considerable clinical and histological resemblance between ILVEN and linear psoriasis, lichen striatus, linear lichen planus, and invasion of epidermal nevus by psoriasis. The pathogenesis of ILVEN is unknown. It is regarded as a genetic dyskeratotic disease reflecting genetic mosaicism. Here, a case of vulvar and perianal condyloma superimposed ILVEN is presented.

Bullous morphea: a distinct entity?

A 57-year-old woman who had undergone lumpectomy for infiltrating duct-cell carcinoma of the right breast was found to have morphea after receiving radiation therapy. Three years later she developed a vesicular eruption on the area of the morphea, which was diagnosed as bullous morphea. The histologic findings of the vesicular component were characteristic of lichen sclerosus et atrophicus. It is suggested that in some cases bullous morphea represents a secondary appearance of bullous lichen sclerosus et atrophicus on a lesion of morphea.

Severe erosive stomatitis: association with immunological diseases?

We present 2 cases of severe erosive stomatitis. The first case involves the rare association of an extensive, erosive lichen planus with a Castleman's tumor. The second case involves the association of lichen planus pemphigoides with severe, obstructive lung disease (bronchiolitis obliterans). We believe that in both cases the conjunction of these conditions is not fortuitous but perhaps due to an underlying immune dysfunction. With patients presenting a severe, therapy-resistant, erosive stomatitis, one should be alerted to the possibility of immunological diseases and/or tumors.

In vitro, in vivo and in silico anticancer activity and toxicity of Usnic acid extracted from the mycobiont culture of Usnea baileyi.

Lichen has widespread uses in indigenous medicinal traditions, and it has been used to treat various conditions. Among the various active compounds in the lichen, Usnic acid has unique biological activities. However, the toxicology and the mechanism of action of Usnic acid need to be examined in detail to the extent of clinical trials. Hence, the present research is aimed to isolate usnic acid from the mycobiont culture of Usnea baileyi lichen and explore its toxicological properties and those of pharmacological importance. The methanolic extract of these mycobiont cultures has shown the prese

NH3 concentrations below the current critical level affect the epiphytic macrolichen communities - Evidence from a Northern European City.

Acidophytic, oligotrophic lichens on tree trunks are widely considered to be the most sensitive biota to elevated concentrations of atmospheric ammonia (NH3). We studied the relationships between measured NH3 concentrations and the composition of macrolichen communities on the acidic bark of Pinus sylvestris and Quercus robur and the base-rich bark of Acer platanoides and Ulmus glabra at ten roadside and ten non-roadside sites in Helsinki, Finland. NH3 and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations were higher at the roadside than non-roadside sites indicating traffic as the main source of NH3 and

Norstictic Acid Inhibits Breast Cancer Cell Proliferation, Migration, Invasion, and In Vivo Invasive Growth Through Targeting C-Met.

Breast cancer is a major health problem affecting the female population worldwide. The triple-negative breast cancers (TNBCs) are characterized by malignant phenotypes, worse patient outcomes, poorest prognosis, and highest mortality rates. The proto-oncogenic receptor tyrosine kinase c-Met is usually dysregulated in TNBCs, contributing to their oncogenesis, tumor progression, and aggressive cellular invasiveness that is strongly linked to tumor metastasis. Therefore, c-Met is proposed as a promising candidate target for the control of TNBCs. Lichens-derived metabolites are characterized by th

Treatment of genito-anal lesions in inflammatory skin diseases with PUVA cream photochemotherapy: an open pilot study in 12 patients.

BACKGROUND: Localized skin lesions of the genito-anal region such as in lichen sclerosus et atrophicus or in lichen planus are a burden for many patients, and therapeutic efforts, including therapies with potentially hazardous side-effects, are often unsatisfactory. Recently, PUVA bath photochemotherapy has been proven highly effective in the treatment of various inflammatory skin diseases, including localized scleroderma. Another form of topical PUVA therapy, 8-methoxypsoralen-containing cream or gel preparations, has been proven to be as effective as PUVA bath therapy for palmoplantar dermat

Familial amyloid polyneuropathy (Finnish type) in a Japanese family: Clinical features and immunocytochemical studies.

Familial amyloid polyneuropathy (FAP: type IV), known as familial amyloidosis of the Finnish type (FAF), is very rare and reported only in a few countries. The gelsolin mutation G654A is most frequent causative gene in FAF family. The clinical phenotype of FAF possesses several neurological characteristics with multiple cranial nerve signs, in addition to a peculiar exanthema of "lichen amyloidosus" and pendulous skin "cutis laxa", and the carpal tunnel syndrome. We report a new Japanese FAF family presenting bilateral atrophies and fasciculations of the facial muscles and tongue. The patients

Immunopathology of skin lesions.

A study was conducted on 130 patients suffering from skin lesions which included psoriasis, lichen planus, DLE, pemphigus, vitiligo and alopecia areata. Forty age-and-sex-matched healthy individuals served as control. Serum IgG, IgM, and circulating immune complexes (CIC) were estimated. Significant increase in serum IgG (1937.2 +/- 1030.43 mg%) and IgM (232.12 +/- 136.98 mg%) was observed in all the skin lesions when compared with controls except in lichen planus where they were significantly lowered, values being 580.61+/- 77.35 mg% and 66.88 +/- 6.59 mg% respectively. CIC levels were signif

The under-reporting of skin disease in association with squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva.

Histology sections from 61 cases of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the vulva presenting after 1988 were reviewed for evidence of associated epithelial abnormality. Of the 50 patients with epithelium adjacent to the tumour, 24 had histological evidence of lichen sclerosus (LS), 20 of severe vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN 3), 22 of human papilloma virus (HPV) infection and three of lichen planus (LP). The clinical records and the original histology report were also subsequently reviewed and with the exception of VIN 3, these disorders were poorly reported by both clinicians and patholog

Extracorporeal Photopheresis (ECP) for Refractory Lichenoid Disorders: A Retrospective Analysis of Efficacy and Long-Term Outcomes.

Erosive Lichen Planus (ELP) is a debilitating T-cell mediated dermatosis often refractory to conventional therapies. While Extracorporeal Photopheresis (ECP) is established for other T-cell diseases, long-term data on its efficacy across the lichenoid spectrum, including non-erosive forms, remain limited. We conducted a retrospective study at Amiens-Picardie University Hospital including five adult patients with refractory lichen (erosive or non-erosive) treated with ECP after January 2021. Clinical response was assessed every 3 months, and progression-free survival (PFS) was analyzed. Five fe

The causal relationship between gut microbiota and immune skin diseases: A bidirectional Mendelian randomization.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence suggests that alterations in gut microbiota are associated with a variety of skin diseases. However, whether this association reflects a causal relationship remains unknown. We aimed to reveal the causal relationship between gut microbiota and skin diseases, including psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, acne, and lichen planus. METHODS: We obtained full genetic association summary data for gut microbiota, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, acne, and lichen planus from public databases and used three methods, mainly inverse variance weighting, to analyze the causal relatio
