CIELab Colour Coordinate Changes Associated with the Resolution of Gingival Inflammation: Influence of Biotype and Severity.

Background/Objectives: The colour changes related to inflammation have yet to be quantified despite the fact that the intensification of gingival colour is one of the cardinal signs of gingival inflammation. We aimed to (1) assess the effect of periodontal treatment on gingival colour according to biotype and initial degree of inflammatory severity and (2) identify the relationship between the plaque index and gingival colour and compare the colour of moderately or severely inflamed gums to the colour of gums with mild inflammation. Methods: Forty-three participants with visual signs of inflam

Understanding and Enhancing Stereoscopic 3D Graph Perception with Eye Tracking.

Immersive Analytics (IA) utilises stereoscopic 3D (S3D) graph visualisations in Virtual and Augmented Reality to harness spatial understanding and engagement beyond 2D screen displays. Despite growing research interest, little is known about how users perceive such structures, or how their gaze behaviour relates to task performance. We address this through a series of eye tracking studies on visual analytical tasks over S3D graphs in VR. Our first study, on single-layer graphs, reveals systematic links between gaze behaviour and task performance, with distinct exploration strategies across tas

A skin-conformal rigid-in-soft array-based imaging system.

Array-based imaging systems offer unparalleled capabilities for mapping complex environments, but their inherent structural rigidity prevents intimate integration with dynamic, non-rigid hosts such as human skin and soft robots. While flexible visual sensor arrays offer compliance, fabrication constraints severely limit their pixel density and overall resolution. Here, we present SkinSight, a skin-conformal imaging system that overcomes this trade-off through a hybrid "rigid-in-soft" architecture. By integrating miniaturized imagers with stretchable interconnects, SkinSight achieves stable, hi

Surgical repositioning of a SING IMT following haptic dislocation: Restoration of alignment and visual function.

PURPOSE: The Smaller-Incision New-Generation Implantable Miniature Telescope (SING IMT) is an IOL designed to enhance central vision in patients with bilateral late-stage AMD. This report describes a case of successful surgical repositioning of a tilted SING IMT following haptic displacement out of the capsular bag. OBSERVATIONS: A 77-year-old man with bilateral geographic atrophy and baseline CDVA (Corrected Distance Visual Acuity) of logMAR 0.96 (Snellen 20/200) underwent uncomplicated implantation of a SING IMT in the right eye. Six weeks postoperatively, CDVA showed no improvement, and th

Case Report: Unilateral optic perineuritis as the initial presentation of multiple myeloma.

BACKGROUND: Multiple myeloma (MM) is typically diagnosed based on systemic symptoms such as anemia or fatigue, or through imaging findings of bone lytic lesions. Neurologic manifestations as the initial presentation are rare. In this case, we report a patient diagnosed with MM after presenting with severe, unilateral vision loss. METHODS: A 67-year-old woman presented with a 5-day history of painless vision loss in her left eye. Her visual acuity was severely reduced to light perception, yet both the optic disc and retinal vessels appeared normal upon examination. Blood tests revealed no sign

Detecting biological motion signals in human and monkey superior colliculus: a subcortical-cortical pathway for biological motion perception.

Most vertebrates, including humans, are highly adept at detecting and encoding biological motion, even when it is portrayed by just a few point lights attached to the head and major joints. However, the function of subcortical regions in biological motion perception has been scarcely explored. Here, we investigate the role of the superior colliculus in local biological motion processing. Using high-field (3 T) and ultra-high-field (7 T) functional magnetic resonance imaging, we record the neural responses of the superior colliculus to scrambled point-light walkers (with local kinematics retain

An Integrated Neuroimaging Approach to Inform Transcranial Electrical Stimulation Targeting in Visual Hallucinations.

For decades, noninvasive brain stimulation (NIBS), such as transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), has been used to directly modulate human brain mechanisms of visual perception, setting the groundwork for the development of novel circuit-based therapies. While the field of NIBS has grown considerably over recent years, few studies have used these technologies to treat visual hallucinations (VH). Here, we review the NIBS-VH literature and find mixed results due to shortcomings that may potentially be addressed with a unique multimodal neuroimaging-NIBS approach. We highlight methodological

Perceptual influence of auditory pitch on motion speed.

There is a cross-modal mapping between auditory pitch and many visual properties, but the relationship between auditory pitch and motion speed is unexplored. In this article, the ball and baffle are used as the research objects, and an object collision experiment is used to explore the perceptual influence of auditory pitch on motion speed. Since cross-modal mapping can influence perceptual experience, this article also explores the influence of auditory pitch on action measures. In Experiment 1, 12 participants attempted to release a baffle to block a falling ball on the basis of speed judgme

Perception of infection: disease-related social cues influence immunity in songbirds.

While avoidance of sick conspecifics is common among animals, little is known about how detecting diseased conspecifics influences an organism's physiological state, despite its implications for disease transmission dynamics. The avian pathogen Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) causes obvious visual signs of infection in domestic canaries (Serinus canaria domestica), including lethargy and conjunctivitis, making this system a useful tool for investigating how the perception of cues from sick individuals shapes immunity in healthy individuals. We tested whether disease-related social information ca

Anatomy and white matter connections of the fusiform gyrus.

The fusiform gyrus is understood to be involved in the processing of high-order visual information, particularly related to faces, bodies, and stimuli characterized by high spatial frequencies. A detailed understanding of the exact location and nature of associated white-tracts could significantly improve post-operative morbidity related to declining capacity. Through generalized q-sampling imaging (GQI) validated by gross dissection as a direct anatomical method of identifying white matter tracts, we have characterized these connections based on relationships to other well-known structures. Spontaneous Feedforward Connectivity in Electrically Stimulated Retinal Degeneration Mice.

Retinal degeneration (Rd) is a neurodegenerative disorder primarily associated with the degeneration of the retina neurons and culminates in the eventual loss of visual perception or blindness. Decrease in fronto-, parietal and occipital brain connectivity have been reported in a number of neurodegeneration diseases involving cognitive decline. However, cortical communication in the brain of retinal degeneration patients remains largely unknown and strategies to remediate observed dysfunctional brain connectivity in such instance have not be thoroughly investigated. We used rd10 mice as a mode

Context-dependent dynamic functional connectivity alteration of lateral occipital cortex in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia has long been associated with dysfunction in visual perception. One important region underlying this is lateral occipital cortex (LOC), a mid-level visual region critical for object recognition. Although LOC of patients has exhibited structural and functional abnormalities in MR brain imaging studies, how it interacts with other networks over time under rest and with task demands remains to be clarified. The present study investigated the spatial-temporal interaction of LOC with other brain networks by examining functional connectivity communities of the brain over time. We found

Central retinal artery occlusion combined with posterior ciliary artery occlusion after preoperative embolization of the middle meningeal artery for intracranial meningioma: A case report.

RATIONALE: Preoperative embolization of brain tumors has been widely used to minimize hemorrhaging during surgery, but anastomosis between vessels is sometimes overlooked and complications can occur. Herein we describe a case of rare complications of central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO) and posterior ciliary artery occlusion after embolization of the middle meningeal artery. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 48-year-old woman experienced acute, painless loss of vision in her left eye during embolization of the middle meningeal artery for meningioma. DIAGNOSIS: The patient was diagnosed with CRAO and po

Dark Adaptation in Patients with Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma, Pseudoexfoliation Glaucoma and Childhood Glaucoma.

Purpose To investigate the state of dark adaptation and macular blood flow in different forms of glaucoma. Methods Eighteen eyes of 18 patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, 14 eyes of 14 patients with pseudoexfoliation glaucoma, and 10 eyes of 10 patients with childhood glaucoma (CG) were examined by means of dark adaptometry, scanning-laser retinal flowmetry, and retinal tomography. Results All glaucomatous eyes had comparable optic disc excavation (one-way ANOVA, p = 0.138). Eyes with CG had significantly lower best-corrected visual acuity than the other groups (Tukey, all p < 0.0001).

Is transcranial alternating current stimulation effective in modulating brain oscillations?

Transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is a promising tool for modulating brain oscillations, as well as a possible therapeutic intervention. However, the lack of conclusive evidence on whether tACS is able to effectively affect cortical activity continues to limit its application. The present study aims to address this issue by exploiting the well-known inhibitory alpha rhythm in the posterior parietal cortex during visual perception and attention orientation. Four groups of healthy volunteers were tested with a Gabor patch detection and discrimination task. All participants were

Enterococcus faecalis Endogenous Endophthalmitis from Valvular Endocarditis.

We report a case of a 74-year-old female, with a mitral heart valve, who presented with pain and blurred vision in the right eye for 2 days. Her visual acuity was light perception (LP) in the right eye and 20/40 in the left eye. Slit lamp examination showed corneal edema and hypopyon, and a view of the right fundus was impossible. Echography showed vitreous condensation. One day after presentation, the patient developed acute lung edema requiring hospitalization, so she was not submitted to vitreous tap and intravitreal treatment. The cardiac and systemic evaluations revealed a mitral endocard

Color vision abnormality as an initial presentation of the complete type of congenital stationary night blindness.

Patients with the complete form of congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) often have reduced visual acuity, myopia, impaired night vision, and sometimes nystagmus and strabismus, however, they seldom complain of color vision abnormality. A 17-year-old male who was at technical school showed abnormalities in the color perception test for employment, and was referred to our hospital for a detailed examination. He had no family history of color vision deficiency and no other symptoms. During the initial examination, his best-corrected visual acuity was 1.2 in both eyes. His fundus showed no
