Humour-driven risk communication and community engagement to mitigate dengue: Lao People's Democratic Republic, 2024.

PROBLEM: In early 2024, Lao People's Democratic Republic experienced a surge in dengue cases approaching levels of its 2013 epidemic, underscoring the persistent threat of dengue during the monsoon season. Although awareness of preventive behaviours is high, inconsistent adoption has limited their effectiveness. CONTEXT: In response, the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the World Health Organization, implemented an innovative, humour-driven risk communication and community engagement (RCCE) campaign targeting individuals who perceived dengue as a routine health concern. ACTION: To c

Symptom management and transitioning to engagement with post-treatment care for adolescent and young adult cancer survivors (AYA STEPS): Study protocol.

For adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors, treatment impacts are significant and long-lasting, including physical symptoms (e.g., pain, fatigue), emotional distress (e.g., anxiety, depression), and increased risk for long-term health problems (e.g., second cancers, early-onset cardiovascular disease). After cancer therapy, many AYAs lose contact with their oncology team and fail to establish care with providers knowledgeable of their risks and continued care needs. Consequently, AYAs experience inadequate surveillance for late effects and missed opportunities for symptom management

Identifying Barriers and Place-Based Solutions to Physical Activity for Older Adults in East Tennessee.

INTRODUCTION: Older adults in East Tennessee (TN), the fastest growing demographic, face significant health challenges, with 44% reporting four or more chronic conditions. The state ranks 45th in physical inactivity among older adults, exacerbating chronic disease risks, fall-related injuries, and mental health issues. Urban-rural disparities in East TN further complicate efforts to promote active living, particularly for rural residents. PURPOSE: This qualitative study explored socioecological barriers and solutions to increase physical activity (PA). METHODS: In April 2024, two focus group

Measles Tracker: a near-real-time data hub for measles surveillance.

OBJECTIVES: Measles continues to pose a serious threat to global public health, fueled by declining vaccination rates, international travel, and persistent immunization gaps. Early outbreak detection and response remain hampered by fragmented surveillance systems, which often lack interoperability and limit data accessibility. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To address the major limitations of current measles surveillance systems-including data fragmentation and lack of standardization-we developed Measles Tracker, an integrated near-real-time data hub that centralizes and harmonizes measles surveilla

Bringing Healthcare-Level Hand Hygiene Skills to Children Through Iterative App Design.

Handwashing is an effective and low-cost practice that offers protection against a host of infectious diseases, both respiratory and gastrointestinal-but only when it is done at the appropriate time, with proper technique, and consistently when indicated. Public health efforts that emphasized access to clean water, soap, and towels, were combined with public messaging through flyers, posters, and videos with prompts to wash hands. Yet despite these efforts to raise awareness, the public health achievement gap has remained intractably wide. One problem is technique: teachers and parents are not

The history of smoking cessation support in Hungary: A narrative review.

Tobacco use remains the largest preventable cause of death worldwide, including Hungary with a smoking-related death rate in 2019 of 360/100000 (age-standardized death rate), among the highest in the World Health Organization (WHO) European Region. Despite the well-formulated tobacco control interventions defined by the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) in place, smoking prevalence in 2019 was high (27%) and has not decreased since 2014. Therefore, greater emphasis should be placed on addressing and treating smokers. This narrative review summarizes the progress in smoking

Integrating 4 methods to evaluate physical function in patients with cancer (In4M): protocol for a prospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate, patient-centred evaluation of physical function in patients with cancer can provide important information on the functional impacts experienced by patients both from the disease and its treatment. Increasingly, digital health technology is facilitating and providing new ways to measure symptoms and function. There is a need to characterise the longitudinal measurement characteristics of physical function assessments, including clinician-reported outcome, patient-reported ported outcome (PRO), performance outcome tests and wearable data, to inform regulatory and clinical

Addressing dermatologic concerns and teledermatology in undomiciled and sheltered populations.

Homelessness in the United States is a significant public health issue, with dermatologic disease being the most prevalent health concern among the undomiciled and sheltered populations. Despite a growing need for dermatologic care, the supply of dermatologists remains insufficient, contributing to disparities in healthcare access for this vulnerable group. This review aims to detail the spectrum of dermatologic conditions experienced by homeless individuals, identify barriers to adequate care, and explore teledermatology as a potential solution to bridge these gaps. A comprehensive literature

Current gaps in management and timely referral of cardiorenal complications among people with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the Middle East and African countries: Expert recommendations.

The upsurge of type 2 diabetes mellitus is a major public health concern in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Africa (AFR) region, with cardiorenal complications (CRCs) being the predominant cause of premature morbidity and mortality. High prevalence of cardiometabolic risk factors, lack of awareness among patients and physicians, deficient infrastructure, and economic constraints lead to a cascade of CRCs at a significantly earlier age in MENA and AFR. In this review, we present consensus recommendations by experts in MENA and AFR, highlighting region-specific challenges and potenti

Pilot-Testing a Blended Learning Package for Health Care Workers to Improve Index Testing Services in Southern Malawi: An Implementation Science Study.

BACKGROUND: HIV index testing, an intervention in which HIV-positive "indexes" (persons diagnosed with HIV) are supported to recruit their "contacts" (sexual partners and children) efficiently identifies HIV-infected persons in need of treatment and HIV-uninfected persons in need of prevention. However, index testing implementation in sub-Saharan African health care settings has been suboptimal. The objective of this study was to develop and pilot test a blended learning capacity-building package to improve index testing implementation in Malawi. METHODS: In 2019, a blended learning package c
