Pulmonary disease caused by Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) most often occurs in patients with structural lung disease or immunocompromising conditions and typically follows recognized fibrocavitary or nodular-bronchiectatic radiographic patterns. Advanced cavitary disease discovered incidentally in an asymptomatic patient represents an uncommon and diagnostically challenging presentation that may be initially attributed to malignancy, aspiration pneumonia, or endemic fungal infection. We report the case of a 45-year-old man without known immunodeficiency who had alcohol use disorder and act

OBJECTIVES: Gonorrhoea, caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, is a significant public health challenge due to the rising incidence of antimicrobial resistant (AMR) strains. The Valencian Region, one of the top tourist destinations in Eastern Spain, has witnessed an increase of over 200% in the number of cases in recent years. Here, we aimed to investigate the impact of imported AMR lineages in shaping the local gonococcal population and generating sustained transmission events.
METHODS: We analysed 1647 N. gonorrhoeae isolates collected in the Valencian Region between 2012 and 2024 with accompanyi

BACKGROUND: Vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB) remains a preventable cause of severe hemorrhage in early infancy. Late-onset VKDB (2 weeks-6 months) most commonly presents with intracranial hemorrhage (ICH) and can result in death or long-term neurological sequelae. Although routine neonatal intramuscular vitamin K prophylaxis is highly effective, late VKDB may still occur in the presence of contributing factors such as infection or impaired vitamin K availability.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 4-month-old male infant presented with fever, cough, and poor appetite. He was delivered by cesarean secti

The antigenic and genetic characteristics and drug resistance of 10 Bordetella pertussis (Bp) isolates from Liaoning Province between 2018 and 2024 were analyzed. Based on whole-genome sequencing data, seven antigenic genotypes and 2, 047 mutation sites in the 23S rRNA gene of the 10 Bp isolates were analyzed and compared with those of vaccine strains. The results showed that all isolates shared the same fim2-1/fim3-1/tcfA2 genotype as the vaccine strains, while differences were observed in the ptxA, ptxP, prn, and fhaB genotypes; two prn-deficient strains were identified. INTRODUCTION: Symmetrical peripheral gangrene (SPG) is a rare syndrome characterized by distal ischemic necrosis affecting two or more extremities in the absence of major arterial occlusion or vasculitis. Malaria is an uncommon but recognized trigger, most often described in association with severe Plasmodium falciparum infection. Once ischemia progresses to dry gangrene, major amputation is often unavoidable.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old woman presented with rapidly progressive bilateral lower-limb pain, swelling, blistering, discoloration, and tissue necrosis shortly after treatment for

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in increased risk of developing antimicrobial resistance due to the high utilization of antimicrobial agents. Since antimicrobial utilization is a crucial driver in the development of antimicrobial resistance, the need for antimicrobial use surveillance is crucial in identifying prescription patterns that would help provide proper interventions.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the antibiotic use and prevalence of prescription quality indicators among COVID-19 patients admitted at a tertiary government hospital.
METHODS: A retrospective cro

BACKGROUND: The rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi poses a serious threat to global enteric fever control. In particular, the emergence of resistance to third-generation cephalosporins and azithromycin critically undermines available treatment options. Sustained genomic surveillance of high-risk S. Typhi lineages and resistance determinants is essential for informing antibiotic policy and optimizing typhoid conjugate vaccine (TCV) introduction in endemic regions. In this study, we report a multicenter outbreak of carbapenem-resistant S. Typhi in India a

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is the number one cause of death globally, and Sub-Saharan Africa bears the most significant burden. Previous studies conducted in Uganda have revealed high rates of antimicrobial prescribing in hospitals, with evidence of widespread inappropriate use, which necessitates the development of targeted interventions. The inappropriate use of antimicrobials is a driver of AMR. We conducted point-prevalence surveys of antimicrobial prescribing in selected health facilities in central Uganda to identify areas for improvement.
METHODS: The study utilised the

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Proteus mirabilis is a frequent causative agent of urinary tract and wound infections in community and hospital settings. It develops resistance to expanded-spectrum cephalosporins (ESC) due to the production of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) or plasmid-mediated AmpC β-lactamases (p-AmpC). Here, we report the characteristics of ESBLs and p-AmpC β-lactamases encountered among hospital and community isolates of P. mirabilis in two hospitals and the community settings in Zagreb, Croatia.
METHODS: Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed using disk-diffusion

INTRODUCTION: Extended Spectrum β-lactamase (ESBLs) and/or carbapenemases producing Enterobacterales present a significant challenge in treating urinary tract infections (UTIs). Carbapenems, once considered last-resort antibiotics, are now threatened by the emergence of carbapenem-resistant strains.
METHODS: A total of 181 Enterobacterales were collected from (231) urine positive samples of community-acquired (CA) and hospital-acquired (HA) UTI patients from the Urology Department of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center (JPMC) Karachi, Pakistan, between January and June 2022. Antimicrobial susc

Bacterial skin infections are common in dogs and often secondary to underlying conditions like allergies or ectoparasite infestations. Untreated primary causes can lead to recurrent infections and an increased risk of antimicrobial resistance, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP), posing a substantial clinical challenge. Here, we analyzed 896 canine bacterial skin infection samples collected from the China Agricultural University Veterinary Teaching Hospital between 2018 and 2022. Species identification was confirmed by MALDI-TOF and 16S rRNA gene sequencing.
