Unveiling the brain's spatio-temporal processing of salt habituation using high-density EEG.

Better understanding the multifactorial facets of salt perception over the course of a meal is crucial to set novel daily consumption strategies and formulate recommendations. We investigated whether habituation to salt (NaCl) and adaptation would occur within a controlled design, ideal to observe habituation (2 min of short pulses) and within a second more realistic design closer to bites time-frame (20 s continuous in-mouth stimulation) using High-Density Electroencephalography in healthy human adults. In the first design, a slight habituation to salt occurred as saltiness intensity decrease

Involvement of sodium-glucose cotransporter-1 activities in maintaining oscillatory Cl- currents from mouse submandibular acinar cells.

In salivary acinar cells, cholinergic stimulation induces elevations of cytosolic [Ca2+]i to activate the apical exit of Cl- through TMEM16A Cl- channels, which acts as a driving force for fluid secretion. To sustain the Cl- secretion, [Cl-]i must be maintained to levels that are greater than the electrochemical equilibrium mainly by Na+-K+-2Cl- cotransporter-mediated Cl- entry in basolateral membrane. Glucose transporters carry glucose into the cytoplasm, enabling the cells to produce ATP to maintain Cl- and fluid secretion. Sodium-glucose cotransporter-1 is a glucose transporter highly expre

Spot urinary sodium-to-potassium ratio is associated with blood pressure levels in healthy adolescents: the Wakayama Study.

The spot urinary sodium-to-potassium (Na/K) ratio is a simple measure of salt loading and has been shown to be associated with elevated blood pressure (BP) in middle-aged and older adults. This study aimed to evaluate the association between the spot urinary Na/K ratio and BP in 457 healthy adolescents aged 12-15 years in a school-based setting. The mean urinary Na/K ratio was 4.99 ± 2.76, and no significant difference was found between the boys and girls. When the participants were stratified based on urinary Na/K ratio quartile, age- and sex-adjusted systolic and diastolic BP gradually incre

Crop effect and mechanism of amino acid-modified biomass ash in remediation of cadmium-contaminated soil.

Lignocellulosic biomass ash (BA) has certain adsorption and passivation effects on heavy metals, but its function is generally weak. Amino acid salt can facilitate the leaching of heavy metals in soil. Therefore, modification of BA with amino acid salt may realize a higher leaching rate and better passivation of heavy metals in soil. In this study, BA was modified by amino acid hydrolysate obtained from the hydrolysis of chicken feathers by sulfuric acid. The physicochemical properties of BA and modified BA (MBA), their effects on Chinese cabbage (CC) yield and nutritional quality, and passiva

Nile blue as reporter dye in salt aggregation based-colorimetric aptasensors for peptide, small molecule and metal ion detection.

Herein, we report a novel approach for the design of a colorimetric aptasensor, relying on a Dye Salt Aggregation-based Colorimetric Oligonucleotide assay (DYSACO assay). This method is based on the use of an intercalating agent, Nile Blue (NB), whose aggregation capacities (and thus modification of its absorption spectrum) are drastically amplified by adding salts to the working solution. The presence of an aptamer could protect NB from such aggregation process due to its intercalation into double-stranded DNA and/or interaction with nucleobases. In response to the addition of the specific li

Fortification of salt with iron and iodine versus fortification of salt with iodine alone for improving iron and iodine status.

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency is an important micronutrient deficiency contributing to the global burden of disease, and particularly affects children, premenopausal women, and people in low-resource settings. Anaemia is a possible consequence of iron deficiency, although clinical and functional manifestations of anemia can occur without iron deficiency (e.g. from other nutritional deficiencies, inflammation, and parasitic infections). Direct nutritional interventions, such as large-scale food fortification, can improve micronutrient status, especially in vulnerable populations. Given the highly

Recent Advances in Hypertension: Epigenetic Mechanism Involved in Development of Salt-Sensitive Hypertension.

This review highlights recent insights into the epigenetic mechanism of salt-sensitive hypertension from the fetus to the elderly population, mainly focusing on the DNA methylation and histone modification-mediated regulation of hypertension-associated genes. Maternal malnutrition during pregnancy induces upregulation of AT1a (angiotensin receptor 1a) by aberrant DNA methylation, and increased AT1A activity in the hypothalamus develops prenatally programmed salt-sensitive hypertension through renal sympathetic overactivity. In addition, maternal lipopolysaccharide exposure during pregnancy ind

The World Hypertension League Science of Salt: a regularly updated systematic review of salt and health outcomes studies (Sept 2019 to Dec 2020).

The World Hypertension League Science of Salt health outcomes review series highlights high-quality publications relating to salt intake and health outcomes. This review uses a standardised method, outlined in previous reviews and based on methods developed by WHO, to identify and critically appraise published articles on dietary salt intake and health outcomes. We identified 41 articles published between September 2019 to December 2020. Amongst these, two studies met the pre-specified methodological quality criteria for critical appraisal. They were prospective cohort studies and examined phy

Rational Development of Neutral Aqueous Electrolytes for Zinc-Air Batteries.

Neutral aqueous electrolytes have been shown to extend both the calendar life and cycling stability of secondary zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Despite this promise, there are currently no modeling studies investigating the performance of neutral ZABs. Traditional continuum models are numerically insufficient to simulate the dynamic behavior of these complex systems because of the rapid, orders-of-magnitude concentration shifts that occur. In this work, we present a novel framework for modeling the cell-level performance of pH-buffered aqueous electrolytes. We apply our model to conduct the first

Antihypertensive role of tissue kallikrein in hyperaldosteronism in the mouse.

Tissue kallikrein (TK) is synthesized in arteries and distal renal tubule, the main target of aldosterone. Urinary kallikrein excretion increases in hyperaldosteronism. We tested the hypothesis that TK is involved in the cardiovascular and renal effects of high aldosterone. Kallikrein-deficient mice (TK-/-), and wild-type (WT) littermates, studied on two different genetic backgrounds, were treated with aldosterone and high-NaCl diet for 1 month. Control mice received vehicle and standard NaCl diet. Treatment induced 5- to 7-fold increase in plasma aldosterone, suppressed renin secretion, and i

Identification of anionic supramolecular complexes of sulfonamide receptors with Cl-, NO3-, Br-, and I- by APCI-MS.

As part of a mass spectrometric investigation of the binding properties of sulfonamide anion receptors, an atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometric (APCI-MS) method involving direct infusion followed by thermal desorption was employed for identification of anionic supramolecular complexes in dichloromethane (CH2Cl2). Specifically, the dansylamide derivative of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) (1), the chiral 1,3-benzenesulfonamide derivatives of (1R,2S)-(+)-cis-1-amino-2-indanol (2), and (R)-(+)-bornylamine, (3), were shown to bind halide and nitrate ions in the presence of (n

Crypt base cells show forskolin-induced Cl- secretion but no cation inward conductance.

Whole-cell patch-clamp studies in base cells of isolated colonic crypts of rats pretreated with dexamethasone were performed to examine the effects of stimulation by forskolin (10 micromol/l). The experiments were designed in order to distinguish between two postulated effector mechanisms: the activation of a non-selective cation channel and the activation of Cl- channels. As shown in an accompanying report, forskolin depolarizes the membrane voltage (Vm) by some 40-50 mV and enhances the whole-cell membrane conductance (Gm) substantially in these cells. In this report all experiments were per

Thiazide-sensitive Na-Cl cotransport mediates NaCl absorption in amphibian distal tubule.

To find out the mechanism(s) underlying NaCl absorption in the distal tubule of Necturus, we devised a variant of the split-drop technique. Following injection an oil column, subsequently split by a NaCl solution isotonic to plasma, a double-barrelled microelectrode (conventional/selective to Na+ or to Cl- ions) recorded Na+ (alpha Na) or Cl- (alpha Cl) activity and transepithelial potential (Vte). Paired control/low-Na+ solutions yielded reabsorptive half-times (t1/2) of 0.68 +/- 0.11 min and 7.6 +/- 1.8 min respectively; corresponding Vte values were -22.2 +/- 4.0 mV and -7.6 +/- 1.9 mV. t1/

Fetal fluid responses to long-term 5 M NaCl infusion: where does all the salt go?

The fetus must obtain Na and Cl ions in order to grow. However, the regulation of electrolyte acquisition by the fetus is not well understood. To explore fetal electrolyte balance, we intravenously infused 5 M NaCl at a rate equal to 80% of the total fetal body Na+ and Cl- content per day (240 mM/day) for 3 days into late-gestation fetal sheep. We hypothesized that the increase in fetal osmolality resulting from the infusion would cause a transplacental water movement into the fetal compartment, leading to hydrops fetalis and/or polyhydramnios. The fetal-to-maternal osmotic gradient was initia

Effect of acute metabolic acidemia on renal electrolyte transport in man.

The effect of acute NH4C1-induced metabolic acidemia on renal electrolyte excretion was examined in nine healthy subjects during steady state water diuresis. Following oral NH4C1, venous pH and bicarbonate concentration declined significantly (p less than 0.01) while inulin and PAH clearances remained unchanged. Mean sodium excretion (UNaV) increased from 142 +/- 16 mueq/min (mean +/- SEM) to 310 +/- 49 mueq/min (p less than 0.01) at 8 hr without change in plasma aldosterone or renin levels. Urine flow remained unchanged while CH2O/(CH2O + CCl) declined significantly, suggesting that acute met

[Regeneration of the proximal kidney tubules after sublimate-induced necrosis in the rate. Scanning electron microscopic studies].

Necrosis of the proximal tubules of the kidney in white rats has been produced by a relative small doses (1,5 mg/kg) of sublimate. Necrosis of the epithelial cells and their regeneration was studied during 10 days by scanning electron microscopy. Parallelism of the various regressive and regenerative processes was noted, attention was paid to the correlation existing between them. Periodicity of normal and necrotic segments was also observed. As a sequal of the necrosis the basement membranes became denuded, later in the first period of the regeneration flattened epithelial cells--having no mi
