Food and body-related attentional biases in children and adolescents with eating disorder symptoms, overweight and obesity: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Disordered eating behaviors (DEBs), including restrictive eating, binge eating and purging, are associated with mental health problems and an increased risk of eating disorders (EDs), which often occur in adolescence and can have serious health consequences. In addition, the increasing rates of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents raise concerns about their associated physical and mental health risks. Attentional biases (ABs) to food- and body-related cues have been proposed as cognitive mechanisms that contribute to the development and maintenance of EDs and are

Exploring markers of feasibility for a pragmatic study of biomarkers in adolescents with eating disorders: steps towards a precision psychiatry approach.

OBJECTIVE: To examine markers of feasibility for a pragmatic interdisciplinary multi-axial study of biomarkers in adolescents with eating disorders (EDs). METHOD: The study included the collection of medical and clinical variables, psychometric measures, dietary logs, sensory and sleep assessments, and biological samples (i.e., blood and stool collection) for biomarker analyses. Adolescents between the ages of 11 to 17 diagnosed with a restrictive ED, along with control participants were enrolled between November 2021 to July 2024. Participants with EDs underwent concurrent treatment while en

An (un)answered cry for help: a qualitative study exploring the subjective meaning of eating disorders in the context of transgenerational trauma.

BACKGROUND: Current research on the transmission of trauma and eating disorders across generations is limited. However, quantitative studies suggest that the influence of parents' and grandparents' eating disorders and their prior exposure to trauma are associated with the development of eating disorders in future generations. Qualitative research exploring personal accounts of the impact of transgenerational trauma on the development of eating disorders has been largely unexplored. The aim of the current qualitative study was to explore the meaning that participants ascribed to their eating d

A feasibility study of an add-on psychomotor body-image protocol during CBT-E in female patients with an eating disorder.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Disturbed body image is a potential precursor and maintaining factor when it comes to eating disorders. One of the dominant treatment approaches for eating disorders, enhanced cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT-E), includes the cognitive-affective body image dimension as a core treatment target. Adding a component that focuses on the lived body dimension, could improve body image. In the current study, the feasibility of a psychomotor body image treatment as an add-on to CBT-E was examined. METHODS: In this pilot study, 115 primarily female patients with different eat

Weight Suppression, Binge Eating, and Purging as Predictors of Weight Gain During Inpatient Treatment in Persons With Bulimia Nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Persons with bulimia nervosa (BN) often gain weight during treatment, which potentially poses a threat to treatment adherence. Although weight suppression has been found to be a predictor of weight gain in persons with BN, research about the trajectory of weight changes during treatment and other predictors thereof is scarce. METHOD: The current study examined weight suppression as well as self-reported binge eating severity and purging frequency at admission as predictors of weight change in 746 persons with BN (95% female) who received inpatient treatment at the Schoen Clinic Ros

Exploring the utility of N-acetylcysteine for loss of control eating: protocol of an open-label single-arm pilot study.

BACKGROUND: A sense of loss of control over eating, such that eating occurs despite the intent not to, is common in people with obesity and eating disorders such as binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa. Currently, options for management of loss of control eating are limited. We recently determined that the pro-drug N-acetylcysteine (NAC) reduces compulsive-like eating in a rat model of diet-induced obesity. We will now conduct a single site, open-label pilot study to examine the feasibility of a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of NAC for loss of control eating in humans. METHODS: Thirt

Mindfulness acting with awareness and emotional eating among polycystic ovary syndrome women with infertility: the mediating role of depression.

Emotional eating, characterized by the tendency to increase food intake in response to negative emotional states, is often linked to poor emotion regulation. While mindfulness-based interventions have been studied for their benefits in reducing emotional eating, less is known about how inherent mindfulness traits, relate to emotional regulation particularly among individuals with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a population known for high rates of psychological distress and disordered eating behaviors. This study investigates the associations between different facets of mindfulness, depressi

Septin 9 expression regulates 'don't eat me' signals and identifies an immune-epithelial class of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma.

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) is a highly heterogeneous and aggressive liver cancer with limited therapeutic options. Precise classification and immunotherapy are perspectives to improve the treatments. We reported the role of septin 9 in apico-basal polarity and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Here, we aim to elucidate its role in iCCA. We analyzed single-cell transcriptomes from human iCCA tumor cells based on phenotype and cell state. Knockdown of the septin 9 gene (SEPT9) was done using small interfering RNA (siRNA); interferon-γ (IFN-γ) stimulation was performed using

The Effectiveness of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) in Binge Eating Disorder (BED)-Review and Insight into the Mechanisms of Action.

INTRODUCTION: Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most common eating disorder among those contributing to the development of obesity, and thus acts as a significant burden on the lives and health of patients. It is characterized by complex neurobiology, which includes changes in brain activity and neurotransmitter secretion. Existing treatments are moderately effective, and so the search for new therapies that are effective and safe is ongoing. AIM AND METHODS: This review examines the use of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in the treatment of binge eating disorder. Searches wer

A comprehensive investigation of the association between menopause symptoms and problematic eating behavior in peri- and post-menopause cisgender women.

Midlife individuals assigned female at birth are at risk for problematic eating behavior, associated with negative health outcomes. Little is known about how menopausal symptoms may increase risk in this population. The current study aimed to understand how a comprehensive range of menopause symptoms were globally associated with problematic eating behaviors. A total of 281 cisgender women (176 post-menopause, 105 peri-menopause) from the United States aged 40 to 64 were recruited utilizing Prolific, an online survey platform. Participants answered questionnaires about menopause symptoms and p

Longer-term consequences of increased body checking in women at risk for eating disorders-a naturalistic experimental online study.

Body checking is a common behavior in both the general population and individuals with body image disturbances. Cognitive-behavioral theories postulate that body checking reduces negative emotions in the short term, but over time contributes to the development and maintenance of eating disorder pathology. So far, few experimental studies have assessed these longer-term consequences, mostly under laboratory conditions, yielding inconsistent findings, and without considering individual vulnerability and specific personality traits. In a naturalistic experimental cross-over design, women with low

A pilot feasibility and acceptability trial of an internet indicated prevention program for perfectionism to reduce eating disorder symptoms in adolescents.

PURPOSE: Perfectionism is a transdiagnostic risk factor for eating disorders. Treating perfectionism can reduce symptoms of eating disorders. No research has examined an indicated prevention trial using internet-based Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy for Perfectionism (ICBT-P) in adolescent girls at elevated risk for eating disorders. Our aim was to conduct a preliminary feasibility trial using a co-designed ICBT-P intervention. It was hypothesised that a higher proportion of participants in the ICBT-P condition would achieve reliable and clinically significant change on perfectionism, eating dis

A cross-sectional study on the prevalence of eating disorders in liver transplanted patients with type 2 diabetes and/or overweight/obesity.

Liver transplantation (LT) associates with weight gain and metabolic complications. However, risk of eating disorders post-transplantation and factors influencing their onset remain poorly understood. This study aimed to fill this knowledge gap by characterizing the risk of having eating disorders or Orthorexia Nervosa (ON) according to the EAT-26, BES and Bratman screening questionnaires in 104 liver transplant recipients (mean age 62.5 years; median time from LT 6 years) with type 2 diabetes and/or overweight/obesity. Eighty-two patients (78.9 %) had diabetes; mean BMI was 30.1 ± 5.9 kg/m2.
