The potential of acupuncture in treating sarcopenia: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

UNLABELLED: The global population is aging at an unprecedented rate, leading to a sharp rise in late-life diseases such as sarcopenia. Despite its increasing prevalence, effective pharmacological treatments, exercise regimens, and dietary recommendations for sarcopenia remain limited. Acupuncture has demonstrated potential in improving quality of life for individuals with sarcopenia. However, whether acupuncture is effective for treating sarcopenia remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to assess the therapeutic effectiveness of acupuncture in treating sarcopenia. We con

Osseous Sarcoidosis: Three Typical Presentations of an Atypical Disease.

Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease characterized by the formation of non-necrotizing granulomas in affected tissues. While it most commonly involves the lungs and intrathoracic lymph nodes, it can affect virtually any organ system. Osseous sarcoidosis is a less common manifestation, and its prevalence may be underrepresented, as many patients remain asymptomatic. When symptoms do occur, they may include bone pain, reduced exercise capacity, or localized swelling. The spine is the most frequently involved site. In this case series, we present three distinct patients with osseous sar

Assessment of Phosphorodiamidate Morpholino Oligomer Treatment Patterns for Patients with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy: A MarketScan Claims Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Phosphorodiamidate morpholino oligomers (PMOs), weight-based treatments administered weekly by intravenous infusion, are approved in the US for patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) amenable to certain exon skipping. Evidence regarding PMO treatment patterns in real-world settings is limited. This study used longitudinal administrative claims data to characterize PMO treatment patterns among US patients with DMD. METHODS: MarketScan® commercial and Medicaid data (January 1, 2018-December 31, 2021) were used to identify claims for PMO treatments (eteplirsen, golodirsen,

Exploring preferences of different modes of administration of hypomethylating agent treatments among patients with acute myeloid leukemia.

INTRODUCTION: About half of patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) are not eligible for Standard Induction Chemotherapy (SIC). Hypomethylating Agents (HMAs) intravenously (IV) or subcutaneously (SC) in a clinical setting are typically offered as an alternative. However, injectable HMAs may be burdensome for patients given the frequent hospital visits and side effects. This study explored patient treatment preferences for different modes of administration (MOA) and the relative importance of treatment-related characteristics that influence treatment decisions. METHODS: Semi-structured 1:1

Therapeutic management of atypical antipsychotic‑related metabolic dysfunctions using GLP‑1 receptor agonists: A systematic review.

Metabolic disorders (MDs) like obesity, dyslipidemia, and type 2 diabetes are more frequently observed in patients diagnosed with psychiatric disorders undergoing treatment with antipsychotics, particularly atypical agents, than in the general population. The second generation of antidiabetics (SGAD) has been associated with cardiovascular benefits in large clinical trials which represent an important advantage over first-generation agents and might be of interest in the psychiatric population where multiple risk factors for cardiovascular disease (e.g., smoking, lack of exercise, and lack of

One-step versus two-step screening for diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus in Iranian population: A randomized community trial.

OBJECTIVES: There is considerable worldwide controversy regarding optimal screening and diagnostic approaches for GDM. This study aimed to compare the prevalence, maternal and neonatal outcomes of a One-step with a Two-step approach for the screening and diagnosis of GDM in a large community sample of pregnant women. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of a randomized community non-inferiority trial of GDM screening in Iran. For the current study, all pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria were randomized into two groups for GDM screening. The first group of women (n = 14611) wa

Progressive Modular Rebalancing System and Visual Cueing for Gait Rehabilitation in Parkinson's Disease: A Pilot, Randomized, Controlled Trial With Crossover.

Introduction: The progressive modular rebalancing (PMR) system is a comprehensive rehabilitation approach derived from proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation principles. PMR training encourages focus on trunk and proximal muscle function through direct perception, strength, and stretching exercises and emphasizes bi-articular muscle function in the improvement of gait performance. Sensory cueing, such as visual cues (VC), is one of the more established techniques for gait rehabilitation in PD. In this study, we propose PMR combined with VC for improving gait performance, balance, and trunk

Abbreviated assessment of psychopathology in patients with suspected seizure disorders.

PURPOSE: Psychopathology is common in patients undergoing investigation for seizure-related disorders. Psychometric examination using self-report instruments, such as the Symptom Checklist 90 - Revised (SCL-90-R), can assist diagnosis. The SCL-90-R, however, is a lengthy instrument and might not be tolerated by all patients. We assessed several abbreviated forms of the SCL-90-R in patients undergoing video encephalographic monitoring (VEM). METHOD: Six hundred eighty-seven patients completed the SCL-90-R, and scores were computed for the full SCL-90-R and five abbreviated forms. Correlations

Cardiac rehabilitation in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction: can its failure be predicted?

BACKGROUND: The prognosis in patients after acute coronary syndromes (ACS) is significantly burdened by coexisting anaemia, leukocytosis and low glomerular filtration rate (GFR). Hyperglycaemia in the early stages of ACS is a strong predictor of death and heart failure in non-diabetic subjects. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of hyperglycaemia, anaemia, leukocytosis, thrombocytopaenia and decreased GFR on the risk of the failure of cardiac rehabilitation (phase II at the hospital) in post-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients. METHODS: The study included 136 post

From gene engineering to gene modulation and manipulation: can we prevent or detect gene doping in sports?

During the last 2 decades, progress in deciphering the human gene map as well as the discovery of specific defective genes encoding particular proteins in some serious human diseases have resulted in attempts to treat sick patients with gene therapy. There has been considerable focus on human recombinant proteins which were gene-engineered and produced in vitro (insulin, growth hormone, insulin-like growth factor-1, erythropoietin). Unfortunately, these substances and methods also became improper tools for unscrupulous athletes. Biomedical research has focused on the possible direct insertion

Clinical features of gastroduodenal injury associated with long-term low-dose aspirin therapy.

Low-dose aspirin (LDA) is clinically used for the prevention of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events with the advent of an aging society. On the other hand, a very low dose of aspirin (10 mg daily) decreases the gastric mucosal prostaglandin levels and causes significant gastric mucosal damage. The incidence of LDA-induced gastrointestinal mucosal injury and bleeding has increased. It has been noticed that the incidence of LDA-induced gastrointestinal hemorrhage has increased more than that of non-aspirin non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)-induced lesions. The pathogenesis relat

Long-acting beta-agonists in the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: current and future agents.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by progressive airflow limitation and debilitating symptoms. For patients with moderate-to-severe COPD, long-acting bronchodilators are the mainstay of therapy; as symptoms progress, guidelines recommend combining bronchodilators from different classes to improve efficacy. Inhaled long-acting β2-agonists (LABAs) have been licensed for the treatment of COPD since the late 1990s and include formoterol and salmeterol. They improve lung function, symptoms of breathlessness and exercise limitation, health-related quality of life, and may

Minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting: initial Connecticut experience.

We report the initial Connecticut experience with minimally invasive coronary artery bypass grafting. This procedure allows bypass grafting to the left anterior descending coronary artery utilizing the internal mammary artery as the conduit. The procedure is minimally invasive because it is performed through a mini-thoracotomy incision in the fourth anterior intercostal space and it is conducted without the use of cardiopulmonary bypass. The procedure has been applied to 13 patients operated between February and October 1996. All but one patient selected were poor candidates for conventional c

A risk-benefit assessment of flumazenil in the management of benzodiazepine overdose.

The worldwide expansion in the use of benzodiazepines has led to their frequent, and often inappropriate, use and to increase in their involvement in self-induced poisoning and iatrogenic overdosing. Flumazenil is a specific and competitive antagonist at the central benzodiazepine receptor, reversing all effects of benzodiazepine agonists without tranquillising or anticonvulsant actions. Incremental intravenous bolus injections of flumazenil 0.1 to 0.3 mg are the most effective and well tolerated in the diagnosis and treatment of pure benzodiazepine overdose; additional boluses or an infusion

Epoetin beta. A review of its pharmacological properties and clinical use in the management of anaemia associated with chronic renal failure.

Epoetin beta is a recombinant form of erythropoietin, the hormone responsible for the maintenance of erythropoiesis. The drug binds to and activates receptors on erythroid progenitor cells which then develop into mature erythrocytes. Epoetin beta increases reticulocyte counts, haemoglobin levels and haematocrit in a dose-proportional manner. These changes are accompanied by beneficial cardiovascular effects, including decreased cardiac output, resting heart rate and left ventricular hypertrophy in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). Increases of 15 to 54% in haemoglobin levels and 17 to
