Proposing Bromo-Epi-Androsterone (BEA) for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has traditionally been viewed as a psychiatric disorder of fear, memory, and emotional regulation. However, growing evidence implicates systemic and neuroinflammation as key contributors. Individuals with PTSD often exhibit elevated blood levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and C-reactive protein, indicating immune dysregulation. Dysfunctions in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis marked by reduced cortisol levels impair the body's ability to regulate inflammation, allowing persistent immune activation. Circulating cy

Ovariectomy attenuates phenotypes related to Alzheimer's disease in a preclinical mouse model and in C57BL/6 J mice.

Women are at higher risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD) than men and hormonal changes during perimenopause are considered a risk factor. The relationship between ovarian hormones and AD has been explored using AD animal models, especially through ovariectomy (OVX) in established AD models. The link between early-stage AD and ovarian hormones, however, remains unclear, largely due to the lack of suitable animal models. Appropriate models for studying early-stage AD pathology, treatment, and prevention are critically needed. The App knock-in mouse model, which carries a single amyloid precursor pr

The ventral midline thalamus: Participation in neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders.

The ventral midline thalamus comprises the reuniens and rhomboid nuclei (ReRh). These nuclei are bidirectionally connected not only with two key brain structures relevant to cognition - the (medial) prefrontal cortex and the hippocampus - but also with over thirty other brain regions, often reciprocally. Over the past two decades, these nuclei have attracted increasing interest for their roles in various memory functions, including working memory and systems consolidation, as well as in behavioral flexibility, emotions such as fear, and the regulation of plasticity. Unsurprisingly, the Re nucl

Veteran and first responder family members show distinct mental health networks centered on negative emotions.

The interplay of mental health symptoms among family members of veterans and first responders remains poorly understood despite their vital support role. Network analysis and community detection were performed on mental health assessment data from 317 treatment-seeking family members of trauma-exposed veterans and first responders, who completed clinical distress measures including posttraumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety. Network analysis revealed six distinct symptom communities: depression, generalized anxiety disorder, intrusion and avoidance, anxious arousal, externalizing b

Biopsychosocial profiles following ACL reconstruction: A latent class analysis of barriers to return-to-activity.

OBJECTIVE: Understanding of how biopsychosocial factors interrelate to affect recovery from ACL injuries is essential for improving patient outcomes. This research aimed to use Latent Class Analysis (LCA) to classify individuals post-ACL reconstruction into subgroups reflecting their particular biopsychosocial challenges to recovery. DESIGN: Cross-Sectional. METHODS: This multisite investigation included 134 ACLR patients approximately 6 months (5.6 months ± 1.8 SD) following surgery. The ACL Reasons scale, various Patient Reported Outcome (PRO), and performance-based measures were assessed.

Norms of masculinity: community voices on sexual and reproductive health communication in rural southwestern Uganda.

Sexual and reproductive health (SRH) communication between parents and children is critical for adolescent well-being but remains limited in many Sub-Saharan African contexts. This study examined how masculinity norms shape SRH communication between parents and boys in rural southwestern Uganda, where such interactions are often constrained by gender socialisation, fear-based approaches, and traditional expectations of masculinity. Using qualitative methods and a community-based participatory research design, data were collected from emerging adults, parents and community stakeholders to ident

Benefits of Epinephrine for Anaphylaxis Outweigh Potential Harm-A Safety Review.

Anaphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that can progress quickly, and although fatal anaphylaxis is very rare, treatment should be given as soon as possible. The recommended first-line treatment for anaphylaxis is intramuscular (IM) epinephrine. Yet epinephrine for anaphylaxis is underused, which can have deleterious, or even tragic, consequences. Although fear of self-injection substantially affects adherence, hesitancy to use epinephrine for anaphylaxis may be linked to the common unsubstantiated perception that epinephrine is dangerous. Therefore, the objective of t

Prevalence, determinants, and barriers to follow-up colonoscopy after a positive fecal immunochemical test in Qaemshahr, Iran: A population-based cross-sectional study from 2022 to 2023.

OBJECTIVE: Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) screening reduces mortality by detecting early-stage colorectal cancer (CRC), but its success depends on follow-up colonoscopy after a positive result. Follow-up rates vary widely, influenced by several barriers, which need to be addressed. Thus, the present study aimed to assess the prevalence, determinants, and barriers to a follow-up colonoscopy after a positive FIT result. METHODS: This cross-sectional study evaluated FIT-based CRC screening from April 2022 to March 2023 in Qaemshahr, Iran. Positive FIT results triggered follow-up colonoscopies.

Pain neuroscience education with physical activity improves physical and psychological outcomes in older women with chronic low back pain.

Chronic low back pain (CLBP) significantly impairs quality of life and increases mortality among older adults, making its effective management essential for healthy aging. This quasi-randomized trial compared Pain Neuroscience Education emphasizing physical activity (PNE-PA) with traditional biomechanical treatments (BM) in older women with CLBP over 12 weeks. Community-dwelling women aged 65-90 years with CLBP were assigned to either group based on recruitment timing, using a double-blinded design. PNE-PA aimed to reduce pain-related fear by educating patients about pain neuroscience and enco

Examining the Role of Oxytocinergic Signaling and Neuroinflammatory Markers in the Therapeutic Effects of MDMA in a Rat Model for PTSD.

MDMA-assisted psychotherapy has shown potential as an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Preclinical studies involving rodents have demonstrated that MDMA can facilitate the extinction of fear memories. It has been noted that MDMA impacts oxytocin neurons and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore the role of oxytocinergic signaling and neuroinflammatory markers in the therapeutic effects of MDMA. To achieve this, male rats were subjected to a model of PTSD involving exposure to shock and situational reminders. MDMA was microinjected

A preliminary study of threat-anticipatory responding in Latina youth: associations with age, anxiety, and cortical thickness.

Variation in prefrontal cortex neuroanatomy has been previously associated with elevated physiological responses to anticipated aversive events. The extent to which such associations extend beyond the specific ecology of treatment-seeking youth from upper-middle socioeconomic backgrounds is unknown. The current study tests the replicability of neuroanatomical correlates of anticipatory responding and the moderating roles of age and anxiety severity in a community sample of Latina girls, a historically underrepresented group exhibiting high levels of untreated anxiety. Forty pre-adolescent Lati

Perinatal and neonatal factors and mental disorders in children and adolescents: looking for the contributions of the early environment to common and dissociable aspects of psychopathology.

High rates of co-occurrence of mental disorders have been hypothesized to represent a result of common susceptibility to overall psychopathology. The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that commonalities among psychiatric disorders might be partially driven by sharable perinatal and neonatal environmental factors for mental disorders. Participants were 6-14 years of age children and their parents. Primary caregivers provided data on perinatal and neonatal information assessed retrospectively (n = 2231). Psychiatric disorders diagnoses were assessed using the Development and Well B

Anesthesia Usage and Pain Management in Colposcopy: A Scoping Review of Efficacy and Approaches.

Colposcopies are diagnostic procedures conducted to detect precancerous and cancerous lesions on the cervix and are often done as a sequelae of histological abnormalities found on cervical screening exams, such as precancerous abnormalities, positive human papillomavirus (HPV) results, or a past medical history of cervical dysplasia. Colposcopies, while often necessary to ensure the health of the patient, can induce a lot of anxiety and distress in the time leading up to the procedure, often due to fear of the procedure itself, anticipation of pain, as well as fear regarding the results of the

Understanding Perceptions of Hepatitis C and Its Management Among People with Experience of Incarceration in Quebec, Canada: A Qualitative Study Guided by the Common Sense Self-Regulation Model.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) disproportionately affects certain sub-populations, including people with experience of incarceration (PWEI). Little is known about how perceptions of HCV and treatment have changed despite simplifications in testing and treatment in carceral settings. Nineteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with people living with or having a history of HCV infection released from Quebec provincial prison. Interviews were guided by the Common Sense Self-Regulation Model (CS-SRM) and aimed to explore cognitive and emotional representations of HCV and coping strategies. Among
