Improvements in walking speed reduce mortality in patients with cardiovascular disease during exercise-based secondary prevention: findings from the ITER registry.

AIMS: To investigate associations between walking speed (WS) and mortality among patients with stable cardiovascular disease (CVD). Additionally, it sought to analyse the impact of a long-term exercise intervention on physical function by analysing the relationship between changes in WS and mortality over a decade of observation. METHODS AND RESULTS: Of the 3328 patients included in the ITER registry (NCT05817305) between 1997 and 2023, 2858 (aged 65 ± 11 years) were analysed. Walking speed was measured using the 1-km treadmill walking test (1k-TWT). Patients were initially categorized into t

Early bloom, early boom? Motor competence profiles across maturation: a cross-sectional study.

Motor competence (MC) evolves throughout childhood as biological maturation progresses, yet previous research has largely approached this relationship linearly. Whether more complex patterns exist remains unclear, and while higher body mass index (BMI) is associated with lower MC, its contribution to maturityrelated differences is undetermined. This study examined the relationship between biological maturation and basic MC (BMC) and explored whether BMI mediates this association in schoolchildren. A total of 1155 Italian children (665 girls; age = 9.8 ± 2.0 years) completed anthropometric meas

Oncology Education in Undergraduate Medical Students: A Cross-Sectional Comparison of Expectations and Perceptions Between First- and Sixth-Year Cohorts.

Cancer is projected to become the leading cause of death in Brazil within the next decade. Despite this growing burden, oncology education remains inconsistently structured in undergraduate medical curricula, potentially limiting physicians’ preparedness for cancer care. To compare expectations and perceptions of oncology education between independent cohorts of first- and sixth-year medical students and to assess whether academic stage is independently associated with perceived preparedness and interest in oncology careers. A cross-sectional study was conducted using structured questionnaires

Blended Learning with Holographic Imaging Support in Urologic Oncology Education for International Medical Students: A Controlled Educational Study.

PURPOSE: Teaching urologic oncology to international medical students is challenging because the content is anatomically complex, clinically applied, and often learned in a second-language environment. This study evaluated whether a blended-learning intervention with holographic imaging support improved theoretical knowledge and performance on case-analysis questions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this single-center, parallel-group randomized controlled educational study conducted between April and June 2024, 80 international undergraduate medical students were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to

Postoperative delirium risk estimation and assessment with machine learning: development and validation of the Open-DREAM Model: A peri-operative dataset analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common and serious complication in older surgical patients, associated with increased morbidity, prolonged hospitalisation and increased healthcare costs. Existing predictive models have limited clinical adoption due to implementation costs, suboptimal accuracy and poor generalisability. OBJECTIVES: To develop an open-access, interpretable machine learning (ML) model using only preoperative data to predict the risk of POD in patients aged at least 60 years undergoing surgery. DESIGN: Observational diagnostic study using prospectively collected ro

Social vulnerability and health determinants of Intrinsic Capacity in Mexican older adults: Evidence from the Mexican Health and Aging Study round 2021.

BACKGROUND: Population aging has increased interest in Intrinsic Capacity (IC), defined as the composite of physical and mental abilities that support healthy aging. Because declines in IC precede disability, IC is a useful framework for characterizing individuals with greater vulnerability in later life. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the 2021 Mexican Health and Aging Study, a nationally representative survey of adults aged 50 years and older. IC was assessed across five domains using domain-specific impairment, number of impaired domains, and a continuous latent IC scor
