Cognitive-behavioral correlates of pupil control ideology.

Teacher's pupil control ideology is a central feature for the quality of the teacher-student relationship, which, in turn, impacts the teacher's level of well-being. The pupil control ideology refers to a teacher's belief system along a continuum from humanistic to custodial views. Teachers with humanistic orientation view students as responsible and, therefore, they exert a lower degree of control to manage students' classroom behaviors. Teachers with a custodial orientation view students as untrustworthy and, therefore, they exert a higher degree of control to manage students' classroom beha

Acne from the young patient's perspective.

Acne may significantly impact quality of life, self-esteem and self-worth. The aim of this paper was to provide an overview of the knowledge and perception of acne and its risk factors in adolescents and young adults. The most critical issues reported for an optimal management of this specific population were identified. A PubMed literature review of results from patient-oriented surveys published between 2007 and 2018 was conducted. Two different types of survey were used: those using either validated questionnaires or specifically developed questionnaires. No consistency or directly comparab

Uncertain call likelihood negatively affects sleep and next-day cognitive performance while on-call in a laboratory environment.

On-call working arrangements are employed in a number of industries to manage unpredictable events, and often involve tasks that are safety- or time-critical. This study investigated the effects of call likelihood during an overnight on-call shift on self-reported pre-bed anxiety, sleep and next-day cognitive performance. A four-night laboratory-based protocol was employed, with an adaptation, a control and two counterbalanced on-call nights. On one on-call night, participants were instructed that they would definitely be called during the night, while on the other on-call night they were told

Prevention and management of acute reactions to intravenous iron in surgical patients.

Absolute or functional iron deficiency is the most prevalent cause of anaemia in surgical patients, and its correction is a fundamental strategy within "Patient Blood Management" programmes. Offering perioperative oral iron for treating iron deficiency anaemia is still recommended, but intravenous iron has been demonstrated to be superior in most cases. However, the long-standing prejudice against intravenous iron administration, which is thought to induce anaphylaxis, hypotension and shock, still persists. With currently available intravenous iron formulations, minor infusion reactions are no

Effect of acupressure in treating urodynamic stress incontinence: a randomized controlled trial.

The efficacy of acupressure therapy in managing urodynamic stress incontinence has not been fully investigated. This study evaluates the effects of a validated acupressure protocol for treating women with urodynamic stress incontinence. A randomized, single-blinded, placebo-controlled trial with a before-and-after study design was conducted. Eighty-one women aged between 18 and 60 were recruited at a urogynecology clinic in an acute hospital in Hong Kong. Participants were randomly assigned to an intervention (acupressure) group, a sham group, or a usual care (control) group. A validated acupr

Emotional intelligence is a protective factor for suicidal behavior.

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about what factors protect against the occurrence of suicidal ideation and attempts. We tested whether emotional intelligence (EI)-the ability to perceive, integrate into thoughts, understand, and manage one's emotions-decreases the likelihood of suicidal ideation and attempts among those at risk. METHOD: Adolescents (N = 54) aged 12 to 19 years were recruited from local psychiatric clinics and the community to participate in this cross-sectional laboratory-based study. Analyses examined whether the relations between childhood sexual abuse and suicidal ideation and

Treatment package to reduce SIB in a Lesch-Nyhan patient.

Self-destructive behaviour in LNS children results in a tremendous burden to parents, teachers, staff members, and other responsible for their care. As constant vigilance is not always feasible, developing alternate methods of managing SIB becomes imperative. This report presents our efforts to improve the care of an LNS child and to ease the burden on staff members and parents by obtaining special devices (e.g. the custom-made mouthguard and the gloves) to prevent him from injuring himself. Others (e.g. Letts & Hobson, 1975) have likewise reported success in fabricating custom-designed chairs

Community-Based Physician Attitudes Related to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Early Alzheimer's Disease in the United States.

The increasing incidence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) coupled with emerging diagnostics and treatments underscores the need for early detection of AD, yet identifying these individuals remains challenging. This US study sought to examine community-based physician attitudes regarding diagnosis and treatment of early AD (mild cognitive impairment [MCI] due to AD and mild AD). A total of 177 primary care physicians (PCPs) and 147 neurologists recruited through a national physician panel were surveyed about early AD diagnostic and treatment processes, and self-confidence in identifying and managing

The development and initial evaluation of a forensic community team for people with an intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: Policy initiatives emphasise the need for forensic community intellectual disability teams to reduce avoidable admissions and facilitate timely discharges from inpatient forensic services. These teams provide specialist risk assessment, psychiatric management, and rehabilitation for individuals with intellectual disabilities who have offended or are at risk of offending. AIMS: This paper describes the development and initial evaluation of a Forensic Community Intellectual Disability team in Norfolk. METHODS: A retrospective case-note review examined sociodemographic, clinical, an

Management of hyperkalemia: strategic clinical actions in real-world practice.

This article is part of a review series on water and electrolyte disorders, based on the annual "Electrolyte Winter Seminar" for early-career nephrologists in Japan. The seminar features interactive case-based discussions, some of which are included as self-assessment questions. The fifth installment addresses the management of hyperkalemia. Hyperkalemia frequently occurs in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and can become life-threatening when severe, necessitating prompt treatment regardless of its underlying cause. Renin-angiotensin system inhibitors (RASi) are a recognized risk fa

A Case of Kanamycin Self-Injection for Penile Augmentation and a Literature Review of Penile Foreign Body Injections.

Injection of various substances into the penis for augmentation is an uncommon and concerning practice that can have serious consequences, such as skin necrosis, ulcers, suboptimal cosmetic results, and persistent edema, often requiring extensive surgical repair. In this article, we present a rare case of penile self-injection with Kanamycin ointment. We describe the clinical course of the disease and the management framework that was followed. Initially managed conservatively, the patient later developed voiding difficulties and skin ulcers at the injection site. Further evaluation revealed d

Managing hand-foot-mouth disease in children: More of counseling, less of medicines.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) is a clinical syndrome characterized by a febrile illness, followed by an oral exanthema and a macular, maculopapular, or vesicular rash of the hands, also involving palms, feet, and buttocks caused by enteroviruses of the picornaviridae family. It is a benign self-limiting disease which spreads by fecal-oral, oral-oral, and respiratory droplet contact. This case series describes cases of HFMD, presenting with typical clinical features in the North Indian region where early diagnosis and management of the condition can be carried out to halt the disease pro

Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak Following Explantation of Percutaneous Spinal Cord Stimulator Device: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: While spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a safe and effective treatment for chronic pain, some patients require explantation of their devices due to complications or inadequate pain control. The rate of SCS implantation has steadily increased over the years; however, the complications of percutaneous lead extraction have not been well-documented in the scientific literature. CASE REPORT: We present an 86-year-old patient at our institution who developed an intraoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak during SCS explantation. The leak was conservatively managed with tight surgical c

Ofatumumab: A Review in Relapsing Forms of Multiple Sclerosis.

Ofatumumab (Kesimpta®) is a fully human anti-CD20 monoclonal antibody that can be self-administered by patients and is approved in several countries worldwide for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). In two identical phase III trials in adults with relapsing forms of MS, subcutaneous ofatumumab was more effective than oral teriflunomide in reducing the annualized relapse rate, as well as reducing MRI-detected lesion activity and limiting worsening of disability. Ofatumumab had a generally manageable tolerability profile; the most common adverse events (AEs) included nas

Fractures of the penis.

A penile fracture is a traumatic rupture of the tunica albuginea of the corpora cavernosa in an erect penis, usually as a result of blunt trauma during sexual activity. The aetiology varies with geographical region, with the USA and Europe having a higher incidence of sexual trauma and the Middle East having a higher rate of self-manipulation. Diagnosis is usually clinical, but numerous imaging modalities have been used to confirm the fracture site and to help plan appropriate surgical management. Clinical examination will find a detumescent penis with a diffuse penile swelling and ecchymosis:

Surgical Management of Cicatricial Ectropion in Pityriasis Rubra Pilaris.

Pityriasis rubra pilaris is an idiopathic, papulosquamous dermatological disease. It is clinically and histologically distinct from, but may resemble, psoriasis. Pityriasis rubra pilaris can be self-limiting but may also run a protracted, relapsing course. Medical treatment may involve topical emollients, systemic retinoids, methotrexate, and/or tumor necrosis factor antagonists. Ocular complications include cicatricial ectropion. The authors describe the surgical management of 3 patients with cicatricial ectropion secondary to pityriasis rubra pilaris. All patients had procedures involving sk

Vocational rehabilitation in Wales: a mixed method evaluation of condition management programmes.

Condition management programmes (CMPs) are vocational rehabilitation schemes, which aim to address the needs of disability-related benefit claimants in the UK. The aim of this evaluation was to investigate the extent to which three CMPs in Wales enable individuals to manage health conditions and move closer towards work. Outcome measurements for the Short Form 36 Version 2, General Self Efficacy Scale and Hospital and Anxiety and Depression Scale were collated from 244 clients and analyzed using parametric statistics. Semistructured interviews were also held with members of staff and clients (

Treatment of aggressive ADHD in children and adolescents: conceptualization and treatment of comorbid behavior disorders.

Primary care physicians who treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may expect to encounter oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) in about half of patients with ADHD. Up to 20% of patients with ADHD may meet criteria for conduct disorder (CD), and a higher percentage will exhibit aggressiveness or other symptoms of CD without meeting full diagnostic criteria. Primary care physicians self-report more competence in managing ADHD alone than when it is accompanied by comorbid ODD or CD, even though the diagnostic and treatment considerations are similar.
