In Mexico, Neospora caninum and Toxoplasma gondii are major causes of reproductive problems in sheep. Understanding the environmental factors that influence the spread of these parasites is crucial for developing effective control strategies. The objective of this study was to identify the environmental factors associated with N. caninum and T. gondii infections in sheep in western Mexico. Blood samples were collected from 184 sheep and determine seroprevalence using the ELISA test. Based on the seroprevalence data and information about the climatic regions and geographic characteristics, logi

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) remains a significant challenge in Uganda with precise status largely undocumented in most communities. To determine CE prevalence, post-mortem examination was done on 14 937 livestock (5873 goats, 1377 sheep, 3726 zebu cattle and 3054 Ankole cattle) slaughtered in abattoirs in the districts of Moroto in Karamoja region, Kumi in Teso region and Nakasongola and Luwero in Buganda region. The overall CE prevalence was 21.9% in sheep, 15.2% in zebu cattle, 5.5% in goats and 2.1% in Ankole cattle. Moroto district had a higher prevalence of CE than other districts with 31.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Brucellosis is a bacterial disease notorious for its ability to infect a wide range of domestic and wildlife animals, as well as humans. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of ovine and caprine brucellosis and the associated risk factors in the Province of Bam in Burkina Faso.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The individual serological status of 300 unvaccinated sheep and 300 unvaccinated goats was determined by Rose Bengal and indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA) serological tests used in parallel. The frequency of behaviors conferring risk of developing

Distributed worldwide, Taenia ovis infection is responsible for the condemnation of sheep carcasses in many countries. This review highlights the programme used in New Zealand to successfully control T. ovis in sheep, and discusses how similar approaches may be modified for use in Canada, given what is currently known about the epidemiology of T. ovis. The lifecycle of the parasite is well known, involving dogs as the definitive host and sheep or goats as the intermediate host. An effective vaccine does exist, although it is not presently commercially available. In New Zealand an industry-base

Brucella melitensis is a Gram-negative bacterium whose primary hosts are goats and sheep. Like the other BrucelIa spp., with the exception of Brucella ovis, it is not particularly host specific as it is pathogenic for a variety of other mammal species including humans. In humans the disease caused by it is rated as one of the most important zoonoses. Three outbreaks have been recorded in goats and sheep in South Africa; the first outbreak occurred in sheep in 1965 in the Mpumalanga and Northern Provinces (then both part of the Transvaal Province), the second occurred in sheep in 1989 near Pret

AIMS: To quantify the numbers of live cattle, sheep and poultry imported into New Zealand and, where possible, their country of origin from 1860 to 1979.
METHODS: Information on the origin and number of live animal importations into New Zealand was collected for cattle, sheep and poultry for the period 1868-1979 from the annual reports compiled by the New Zealand Registrar General's Office, Government Statistician's Office, Census and Statistics Office, Census and Statistics Department, Customs Department and Department of Statistics. Census data from 1851 to 1871 were also used to estimate t

After a single oral dosage of 40 mg thiophanate/kg in cattle, sheep and goats, the parent compound and its main metabolite: ethyl benzimidazol-1H-yl-2-carbamate (EBC) are evidenced in plasma by HPLC analysis for 60 to 72 hours. The rate of metabolic change of thiophanate into EBC is 34% in sheep, 52% in goats and 57% in cattle. At this dosage, thiophanate seems to be effective against Dicrocoelium in sheep. On the contrary, EBC is uneffective at 15 mg/kg while it seems undetectable in plasma at any time.

A study was made of village goat and sheep production systems in the humid tropical zone of south-west Nigeria. A summary of the herd and flock population dynamics is given followed by a discussion of the importance of goat and sheep production in southern Nigeria and suggestions for methods of improvement. The problems of livestock production in areas of endemic trypanosomiasis are discussed and it is concluded that, where cattle are excluded due to this disease and where human population pressure is high, goats and sheep have a continuing and increasing role to play in providing meat for the

Guinea-pigs, rats, dogs, rabbits, monkeys, sheep, and goats were screened for G-6PD activity in erythrocytes by the methaemoglobin reduction test, the brilliant cresyl blue decolorization test, and the spectrophotometric determination of the NADPH generation rate. Guinea-pigs, rats, dogs, rabbits, and monkeys were found to have normal G-6PD activity in erythrocytes, whereas sheep and goats were profoundly deficient in this enzyme. There was no evidence of any haemolytic anaemia in sheep and goats at the time of study. The relative sensitivity of these tests is discussed.

This work was designed to compare the histochemical, immunohistochemical, and stereological features of the parotid and mandibular glands of sheep and goat as representative for ovine and caprine species. The parotid gland was serous in both species, while the mandibular gland was a mixed one. Mucous acini were Periodic Acid-Schiff positive and Aldehyde Fuchsin (AF) negative. Serous acini were AF positive. The parotid gland of goat was significantly larger than that of sheep; however, the mandibular gland of sheep was significantly larger than that of goat. The volume of isolated serous acini

Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) is a highly contagious and often fatal disease of sheep and goats. Conventional live vaccines have been successfully used in endemic countries however, there are not completely safe and not allowing differentiation between vaccinated and infected animals (DIVA). In this study, a recombinant Newcastle disease virus (NDV) expressing the hemagglutinin of PPRV (NDV-PPRVH) was evaluated on small ruminants by serology response in sheep and goats, experimental infection in goats and immunity duration in sheep. The NDV-PPRVH vaccine injected twice at 28 days' interval,

A faecal egg count reduction test, using composite samples, was developed in order to assess the efficacy of the flukicide, triclabendazole (TCBZ) on commercial sheep farms in England and Wales. First, a comparison between individual counts and composite counts was conducted using sheep on two farms with different levels of infection. Faecal samples were collected from 50 sheep on each farm at the time of TCBZ treatment and 21 days later. The results showed that a composite fluke egg count (CFEC) was as sensitive as using individual samples, and the test was subsequently validated on an

Giardia intestinalis and Cryptosporidium spp. are commonly identified intestinal pathogens in humans and animals. In light of the clinical disease, production losses and zoonotic potential of both Giardia and Cryptosporidium infections, a study was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of these parasites in cattle, sheep, pigs and horses in Canadian farms at different geographical locations. A total of 104 cattle, 89 sheep, 236 pigs and 35 horses were sampled from 15 different Canadian geographical locations. Fecal samples were examined after concentration and immunofluorescent staining. The pressor and intra-renal actions and effects of octa - and deca-peptides angiotensins II and I and of the catecholamine noradrenaline, in anaesthetized and conscious sheep, are considered. The halothane anaesthetic substantially lowers pressor sensitivity to both peptides but does not influence their ability to liberate K(+) ions into the circulating plasma. In comparison with angiotensin II, both angiotensin I and noradrenaline -- with direct presentation to the kidney -- are ineffective in decreasing intra-renal blood flow. However, with left ventricular injection, both pressor compounds

We recently showed that a form of neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL) in white Swedish landrace sheep is caused by a missense mutation in the cathepsin D gene resulting in complete inactivation of the enzyme. Despite the lack of cathepsin D activity, the brains of the cathepsin D deficient sheep showed strongly increased staining for cathepsin D in immunohistochemistry. By Western blotting, a 5-10 fold increase in the level of cathepsin D was confirmed. These results indicate that the missense mutation in congenital NCL sheep results in the synthesis of an inactive yet stable cathepsin D.

The study was made on reservoirs of infections (rodent, sheep, goat, dromedary), vectors (louse) and human-receptors. Examinations were made on smears examined with staining and indirect-fluorescente techniques and on sera examined by complement fixation test. Chlamydia psittaci appears very often in rodent, sheep, goat, dromedary and man. Antibodies against Coxiella burneti were found present in sheep, goat but mainly in dromedary and less than 16 years old boys. Two lice were carrier of Rickettsia prowazeki; Rickettsia mooseri was detected on one louse and one mouse.

BACKGROUND: Cœnurosis is a cestodosis of the central nervous system of sheep is caused by Coenurus cerebralis, a larva of Taenia multiceps, a tapeworm that infests the small intestine of dogs. This parasitic disease is a major health problem that can lead to the death of the animal, causing significant economic losses. Cœnurosis generally shows no clinical symptoms at the onset of infection; therefore, farmers and veterinarians struggle to identify the early signs of the disease in the field.
AIM: The objective of the research is to determine the prevalence of cœnurosis in sheep in the provin
