Congenital ureteric stenosis: a study of 17 children.

AIM: To review cases of congenital ureteric stenosis treated in the period between 1999 and 2007. We propose to analyze the type of presentation, management and results. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We report 17 children aged 20 days to 8 years with obstructive uropathy due to congenital stenosis of the ureter at one or more levels. This condition could be mistaken for the more common pelviureteric junction obstruction (PUJO) or primary megaureter, but it is a distinct and more serious anomaly. 13 of the 17 children had one or more associated anomalies, the most significant of which was a contralate

[A case of a congenital high-grade hydrocephalus internus and Dandy-Walker syndrome in a black and white German Holstein calf].

A black and white female German Holstein calf showed a highly deformed cranium. The animal was not able to stand. Further findings were bilateral strabismus divergens and negative pupillary light reflexes. Magnetic resonance imaging and pathological-anatomical examination showed that the cerebrum was replaced to a high degree by the ventricle system filled with 1.5 liters of cerebrospinal fluid. The hemispheres of the cerebellum were ruptured by the dilated fourth ventricle. In addition, the vermis and pons were missing and fluid accumulation in the subarachnoidal space extending up to the fir

Lemierre syndrome: a case of a rarely isolated microorganism, Staphylococcus auerus.

BACKGROUND: Lemierre syndrome is an extremely rare complication of mild-to-moderate pharyngeal infections that causes septic embolization to the lungs and other distant sites. One-third of cases present a polymicrobial bacteremia, although the most isolated microorganism is Fusobacterium necrophorum. A case of postanginal sepsis caused by a rarely isolated microorganism, Staphylococcus auerus, in a geriatric patient is reported. CASE REPORT: An 80-year-old man was admitted to hospital with fever and sore throat. Doppler ultrasonography imaging of the neck veins demonstrated an occlusive throm

Progressive symmetric erythro-keratosis associated with oligodontia, severe caries, disturbed hair growth and ectopic nail: a new syndrome?

A 7-year-old girl had well-demarcated erythematous plaques covered with white pityriasiform scales which were symmetrically distributed and involved the extensor surfaces of the extremities as well as the abdomen, buttocks and face. Histological examination showed marked hyperkeratosis with parakeratosis, and a thickened granular cell layer, mild acanthosis and slight lymphocytic infiltration surrounding the papillary blood vessels, compatible with a diagnosis of progressive symmetrical erythro-keratosis. Remarkably, a keratotic excrescence similar to a normal nail plate involved the tip of th

Fibroepithelial papillomatosis ("skin tags") in Rabson-Mendenhall syndrome.

Rabson-Mendenhall syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive syndrome in children involving a defective insulin receptor gene. Several phenotypic features are common to this syndrome, including severe hyperinsulinemia, growth retardation, acanthosis nigricans, dental dysplasia, hirsutism, coarse facial features, and pineal hyperplasia. The authors evaluated and treated a patient with Rabson-Mendenhall syndrome who presented with additional notable syndromic sequelae including extensive fibroepithelial papillomatosis ("skin tags"), not previously described to this extent.

Neonatal repair of cleft lip: a decision-making protocol.

PURPOSE: Treatment of clefts lip during the neonatal period remains a controversial subject. Those who are in favor of delayed closure argue a higher-risk general anesthesia when it was performed in neonatal period. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the complications and the feasibility of this surgery during the neonatal period. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 61 children with labial, labioalveolar, labio-alveolo-palatine, and labiopalatine clefts between May 2000 and November 2006. Each patient's medical file and particularly his or her anesthesia file was used to record

Esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula with distal esophageal stenosis: preoperative diagnosis.

This is a presentation of a case of preoperative diagnosis of apparent esophageal atresia and an apparent distal and tracheoesophageal fistula from a peripheral hospital. After surgery, histopathologic findings showed the absence of cartilage and bronchial glands, suggesting the etiology as a fibromuscular stenosis.

Unilateral optic nerve aplasia associated with rudimental retinal vasculature.

Optic nerve aplasia (ONA) is a rare congenital malformation characterized by absence of optic disk, optic nerve, retinal ganglion cells, and central retina vessels. It is frequently associated with other ocular and central nervous system anomalies. In this paper, we describe a case of ONA associated with microphthalmos and a rudimental retinal vasculature in an otherwise healthy infant.

Tricho-hepato-enteric syndrome presenting with mild colitis.

INTRODUCTION: A four and half-year-old girl was admitted to our clinic with the complaints of diarrhea since birth and failure to thrive. DISCUSSION: The characteristic findings in physical examination were facial dysmorphism, hepatomegaly, and wooly hair. Trichorrhexis nodosa was established in microscopic hair examination. Colonoscopy and histopathologic examination of colonic mucosa revealed mild colitis. In the light of previously published cases, this patient was accepted as a mild variant of syndromic (phenotypic) diarrhea or tricho-hepato-enteric syndrome. We conclude that a mild pheno

Agenesis of the hepatic vena cava in a patient with scimitar syndrome.

With the use of sophisticated imaging modalities, congenital anomalies of the inferior vena cava and its tributaries, such as agenesis of the hepatic vena cava, are becoming more and more commonly encountered. Scimitar syndrome, also called venolobar syndrome and hypogenetic lung syndrome, is a rare pulmonary vascular anomaly of the right lung that can sometimes be associated with some cardiovascular anomalies. We present here a case with agenesis of the hepatic vena cava associated with scimitar syndrome.

Asymmetric lateral distribution of obstructed hemivagina and renal agenesis in women with uterus didelphys: institutional case series and a systematic literature review.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate if an asymmetry exists in the lateral distribution of obstructed hemivagina and renal agenesis in women with uterus didelphys. DESIGN: All English-language medical papers on uterus didelphys, obstructed hemivagina, and associated renal agenesis published from 1980 to 2005 and identified by Embase, Medline, and Pubmed database searches were retrieved. In addition, 41 institutional cases are described. We considered articles in which the presence of a uterus didelphys, obstructed hemivagina, and renal agenesis was assessed as well as the affected side. Data were strati

[Serious cerebral malformations (corpus callosum aplasia, prosencephalic cyst), internal carotid canal and facial malformations due to neural crest abnormalities, associated with choleosteatoma].

The authors report an original case of malformative spectrum, which includes cerebral (corpus callosum aplasia, prosencephalic cyst) facial, otic and basi-cranial dysplasias associated with cholesteatoma. Cephalic neural crest cells migrate to different regions in the head and neck, where they contribute to the development of mainly the first and second branchial arches and of many structures as the anterior skull base, the face, the ear and the forebrain. Data suggest that the link between these rare malformations is abnormal neural crest development, perhaps due to defective Hh signal.

A new case of Martsolf syndrome.

Martsolf syndrome is an autosomal recessive syndrome characterized by microcephaly, mental retardation, cataract, hypogonadism and short stature. A seven-year-old boy was admitted to the hospital with growth retardation and difficulties in walking. His parents were first cousins. Bilateral lens extraction was performed during infancy because of congenital cataract. On physical examination he had short stature, microcephaly, micropthalmia, hypogonadism, mental retardation. Brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed alterations in the white matter. Up to date very few cases with this syndrome hav

A newly recognized craniosynostosis syndrome with features of Aarskog-Scott and Teebi syndromes.

We present two unrelated boys with craniosynostosis and similar facial features including hypertelorism, down-slanted palpebral fissures, ptosis, broad mouth with a thin upper lip, and preauricular pits. Both patients had short, broad first digits as well as short, broad hands. Both also had respiratory difficulties and umbilical abnormalities. Although, many of these features are seen in Aarskog-Scott and in Teebi hypertelorism syndromes, both children had craniosynostosis, which has not been previously reported in either syndrome. We propose that these children may have a previously unreport
