Is the use of sacrificial agents a sustainable practice in scalable photocatalytic hydrogen production from water?

The rapid expansion of green hydrogen production is vital for decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors. Photocatalytic water splitting, which generates hydrogen directly from sunlight and water, has therefore attracted major research attention. Yet translating this promise into scalable reality requires re-examining how photocatalysts are studied and benchmarked. A long-standing laboratory practice involves the use of sacrificial agents (SAs), such as alcohols, sulfides, or amines, that act as hole scavengers to facilitate the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). While this approach has accelerated c

GRU-Based Deep Multimodal Fusion of Speech and Head-IMU Signals in Mixed Reality for Parkinson's Disease Detection.

Parkinson's disease (PD) alters both speech and movement, yet most automated assessments still treat these signals separately. We examined whether combining voice with head motion improves discrimination between patients and healthy controls (HC). Synchronous measurements of acoustic and inertial signals were collected using a HoloLens 2 headset. Data were obtained from 165 participants (72 PD/93 HC), following a standardized mixed-reality (MR) protocol. We benchmarked single-modality models against fusion strategies under 5-fold stratified cross-validation. Voice alone was robust (pooled AUC

Robust Fine-Grained Oriented Ship Detection for Remote Sensing Imagery via Controllable Generative Pretraining.

Fine-grained ship recognition in remote sensing imagery is essential for maritime applications. However, its development is hindered by two challenges: 1) the limited granularity of existing ship detection datasets, and 2) the disturbance of complex maritime conditions as well as the arbitrary ship orientations and distributions. To address the first issue, we annotated a large-scale fine-grained ship instance detection dataset (LAFI), comprising 48,717 ship instances worldwide with 49 categories. To tackle the challenges of marine disturbance and diverse ship status, we proposed a controllabl

Hamaker Constants of van der Waals Materials under Clean-Interface Conditions.

Adhesion stabilizes van der Waals materials and heterostructures, yet reported interaction strengths show a wide dispersion that hinders a consistent link between microscopic dispersive forces and macroscopic observables. Here, we determine clean-interface adhesion by measuring tip-sample interactions in ultrahigh vacuum using calibrated AFM probes of different radii, in situ thermal cleaning, and realistic contact distances. This approach isolates the dispersive interaction of clean interfaces and allows us to extract mixed Hamaker constants for SiO2 interacting with few-layer graphene (12 ×

Spatially decoupled reliable mutual learning for semi-supervised medical image segmentation.

BACKGROUND: Semi-Supervised Learning reduces the annotation burden for medical image segmentation but currently suffers from spatial context overfitting and confirmation bias due to noisy pseudo-labels. This study aims to propose a robust framework to overcome these limitations. METHODS: We introduce a novel framework termed Spatially Decoupled Reliable Mutual Learning (SDRML). To address context overfitting, we propose a Spatial Decoupling strategy that utilizes translation consistency, compelling the model to focus on intrinsic anatomical features rather than fixed background contexts. Nigerian youth FitnessGram edge: A bright signal with important caveats.

In this editorial we comment on the article by Musa et al published in the recent issue of the World Journal of Clinical Pediatrics. Childhood obesity and low cardiorespiratory fitness are escalating drivers of pediatric cardiometabolic risk worldwide, yet data from low- and middle-income countries remain scarce. A recent FitnessGram-based assessment of 3225 Nigerian youth aged 9-16 years from Benue State revealed that 82.7% of males and 78.7% of females achieved the healthy fitness zone (HFZ) for aerobic capacity (AZ), while 94.5% and 96.9% respectively met HFZ body mass index (BMI) criteria.

Cardiac nanomedicine for ischemic injury and remodeling: imaging and therapy.

Cardiovascular disease remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with myocardial infarction and pressure overload driving progressive cardiac injury and maladaptive remodeling that involve dynamic changes in vasculature, cells, and extracellular matrix. Current therapies do not fully prevent this process, creating a need for targeted interventions that can image and treat distinct pathogenic phases. This Review examines nanocarrier strategies for imaging and therapy across ischemic injury, inflammatory repair, fibrosis, and pressure-overload remodeling. Imaging systems exploi

Why classical models fail for deep eutectic solvents: high-throughput evidence of cooperative packing and network-controlled viscosity.

Deep eutectic solvents (DES) offer a sustainable frontier in solvent design, yet their vast combinatorial space makes experimental trial-and-error inefficient. Here, we developed an ultra-fast Python-based pipeline using RDKit to screen nearly 1000 DES mixtures. To evaluate classical predictive models, we benchmarked the Hoftyzer-Van Krevelen (HVK) method and Eyring's hole theory against a chemically diverse dataset of 15 experimentally characterized DES systems. Our findings reveal that classical models fail systematically because they neglect crucial physical interactions. The 2D additive HV

Ion-Specific Modulation of Ferri/Ferrocyanide-Driven Gold Dissolution Uncovered by Quantitative Quartz Crystal Microbalance Analysis.

Gold electrodes in ferri/ferro cyanide (FFCN) are widely treated as chemically stable, outer sphere benchmark systems, despite the growing reports of drift in electrochemical measurements. Here, we use quartz crystal microbalance to quantify FFCN-induced gold mass loss and isolate the roles of anion, cation, pH, buffer chemistry, and self-assembled monolayer. In the absence of FFCN, all solutions show positive mass shifts, indicating that the supporting electrolytes alone do not produce measurable gold loss over the experimental time scale. With FFCN present, gold etching becomes highly tunabl

Adverse karyotype amplifies risk in secondary acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and AML with myelodysplasia-related changes.

BACKGROUND: Secondary acute myeloid leukemia (sAML) and AML with myelodysplasia-related changes (AML-MRC) are associated with poor prognosis, but the impact relative to de novo AML remains controversial. We investigated clinical and genetic features in a multicenter Japanese cohort before CPX-351 approval. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 294 patients with newly diagnosed AML registered in the Hokkaido Leukemia Net between 2022 and 2023. Propensity score matching was used to adjust baseline variables. Genetic profiles were assessed in 160 matched patients. RESULTS: In the matched cohort,

Fréchet ChemNet Distance Is Blind to Double-Bond Stereochemistry.

Fréchet ChemNet Distance (FCD) cannot distinguish E/Z stereoisomers, because the ChemNet tokenizer maps the SMILES bond-direction symbols / and \ to the same unknown token; inverting every double-bond configuration in MolT5-large's ChEBI-20 output (384 molecules altered) changes FCD by 0.001 resampling standard deviations while conditional per-bond accuracy falls from 98.97% to 1.03%, and MOSES and GuacaMol cannot expose the defect because their benchmark data contain no stereochemistry. A stereochemistry-aware correction is monotone under synthetic corruption yet prefers fully inverted real o

CBCT Slice Thickness Impacts Diagnostic Accuracy of Periapical Lesion Volume.

INTRODUCTION: This study assesses whether variations to cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) slice thickness (ST) effect the detection accuracy and volume assessment of periapical lesions. METHODS: Forty periapical lesions were assessed on CBCT reconstructions with 0.125-mm, 0.25-mm, 0.50-mm, 1.00-mm, 1.50-mm, and 2.00-mm ST. Mimics Research was used to perform the semi-automatic segmentation technique to determine periapical lesion volume and CBCT periapical volume index (CBCTPAVI) score on each CBCT reconstruction. Diagnostic accuracy was assessed by determining the percentage of lesions de

Characterizing the Profile of Individuals Who Undergo Flotation-REST: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

Flotation, a form of restricted environmental stimulation therapy (REST), entails lying in a warm saltwater tank. Evidence links it to lower stress and improved mood, but user characteristics outside trials remain unclear. We profiled flotation users and compared health and lifestyle measures with a population benchmark. Adults were recruited from an online community forum and a flotation center in the southwestern United States. The survey included the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ-15) and standardized items from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). User

Integrating Adverse Outcome Pathways with In Vitro-to-In Vivo Extrapolation for Risk Assessment: A Case Study of Cadmium-Induced Bone Toxicity.

Recent advances in regulatory science have promoted the development of next-generation risk assessment, with an increasing emphasis on chemical safety evaluation via new approach methodologies. Herein, an integrated approach combining adverse outcome pathways (AOPs) with in vitro-to-in vivo extrapolation (IVIVE) was established, enabling the systematic organization of mechanistic evidence and the quantitative translation of early molecular events into human health risk metrics. Using cadmium (Cd) as a case study, this framework incorporated toxicogenomic data, bioinformatics, and human-relevan

Graph neural network surrogates to leverage mechanistic expert knowledge towards reliable and immediate pandemic response.

During the COVID-19 crisis, mechanistic models have guided evidence-based decision making. However, time-critical decisions in a dynamical environment limit the time available to gather supporting evidence. We address this bottleneck by developing a graph neural network (GNN) surrogate of an age-structured and spatially resolved mechanistic metapopulation simulation model. This combined approach complements classical modeling approaches which are mostly mechanistic and purely data-driven machine learning approaches which are often black box. Our design of experiments spans outbreak and persist

SNIPSNP: precision design of CRISPR/Cas9 knock-in reagents for variant correction and disease modeling.

We present SNIPSNP (crisprtools.org/snipsnp), a comprehensive bioinformatics pipeline for designing experiments for CRISPR-induced homology-directed repair (HDR). The tool addresses the critical challenge of Cas9 re-cleavage by simplifying the selection of "blocking" silent variants that are effective at inhibiting RNP binding upon donor-templated editing. SNIPSNP handles complex edits, including indels, and uses multi-objective optimization to balance editing efficiency with biological safety. From user-defined wild-type and desired HDR alleles, the pipeline identifies candidate guides, annot

From Agricultural Waste to Sustainable Adsorbent: Characterization of Hazelnut Shell Biochar and Its Performance in Waste Frying Oil Purification.

Agricultural hazelnut shell waste was converted into biochar by slow pyrolysis at 500, 700, and 900 °C and evaluated as a sustainable adsorbent for waste frying oil purification. The biochars were characterized by proximate, thermal, spectroscopic, morphological, and elemental analyses, including Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface-area measurement, and benchmarked against activated carbon and Magnesol. Pyrolysis markedly developed the pore structure, increasing the BET surface area from 1.68 m2/g in the raw shell to 666.05 m2/g at 900 °C, and an exploratory principal component analysis summa

Computationally efficient tail distribution-aware large-scale power system overloading risk assessment.

The uncertainties and intermittency associated with renewable generation sources, such as solar and wind, can pose significant overloading risks to power systems under N - k contingencies, potentially leading to cascading outages. Accurately quantifying these risks in independent system operator scale power systems, which may include tens of thousands of buses, remains a grand challenge. This paper proposes a computationally efficient, tail-distribution-aware approach for accurate overloading risk quantification in large-scale power systems. Specifically, a deep-kernel sparse vector-valued Gau

Quantum-driven frequency stability in Indian prospect smart grid with electric vehicle charging station integration and real-time hardware validation.

In India, the growth of the Electric Vehicle(EV) is gradually increasing due to the high price of fossil fuel and global warming. But in India, the Electric Vehicle Charging Station(EVCS) infrastructure is inadequate due to the limited number of charging points, insufficient grid support for integration with RES. The integration of Electric Vehicle Charging Station(EVCS) along with RES in the Distributed Generation(DG) system confronts frequency fluctuations, variations in tie-line power, and instability. Thus, the employment of a Load Frequency Controller (LFC) with the DG diminishes the issu
