Minor Decrease of Core Temperature in Shivering Volunteers Over a 3-Hour Exposure to Cold, Wet, and Windy Conditions.

ObjectiveHypothermia increases mortality among trauma patients. It is difficult to identify hypothermia in conscious patients due to the limited availability of diagnostic equipment yielding accurate measurements. Shivering is a symptom associated with hypothermia, and it serves as a parameter for clinical staging of hypothermia. Because shivering is part of the body's response to counteract hypothermia, the resulting thermogenic effect and expected cooling rates in shivering individuals warrant further investigation. This study aimed to describe core temperature trajectories in a setting of c

Impact of the 2050 carbon-neutral emission scenario on air quality in South Korea.

The 2050 Carbon Neutrality Scenario (CNS) in South Korea was developed based on greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions and air pollution (AP) control policies. This study evaluated its potential impact on air quality in South Korea in 2050. Implementation of cost-effective and GHG-compatible AP control policies under the 2050 CNS led to projected decreases in emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), oxides of nitrogen (NOx), fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and ammonia (NH3) in South Korea by 56 %, 74 %, 40 %, and 27 %, respectively, relative to 2019 levels. For China and Japan, all emissions exce

Spatial heterogeneity of antibiotic pollution in chinese lakes: A nationwide study with emphasis on arid zones.

Although most previous studies have illustrated the fate of antibiotics in specific lakes, little is known about their distribution from a nationwide scale due to the insufficient knowledge in arid zones, not even to mention declaring the possible impacts driven by both the climate change and anthropogenic activities. To fill this gap, we selected several typical lakes located in arid region of northwestern China-Xinjiang to assess the occurrence and risks of antibiotics in water and sediment, and then to identity the possible influences of parameters focusing on climate change and anthropogen

Unlocking the Comparative Potential of Porous Frameworks: A Review on MOFs and COFs for Gas Sorption.

Gases are integral to Earth's climate and ecosystem balance, but human activity has significantly altered atmospheric composition by increasing greenhouse gas emissions. In 2025, carbon dioxide emissions were estimated at around 39-41 billion tons, reflecting a continued increase. Emissions of carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide were expected to remain close to 2.5 billion tons, 100 million tons, and 25 million metric tons, respectively. Hydrogen sulfide emissions decreased to 15 million tons compared with the previous year. These numbers underscore the challenge of addressin

A degree day model for predicting voltinism of the invasive balsam woolly adelgid (Hemiptera: Adelgidae) in northern Utah.

Balsam woolly adelgid, Adelges piceae (Ratz.) (BWA), invasive in North America, was first detected on subalpine fir [Abies lasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt.] in several northern Utah counties in 2017. BWA phenology is known to vary by elevation and climate; a degree-day (DD) model focused on population expansion into the Intermountain West is needed. Bark samples were collected weekly from infested subalpine fir in early summer through late fall at 5 northern Utah sites from August 2020 to December 2022. At a single site, additional samples were collected biweekly to monthly during winter and spring. T

Rift Valley Fever in Rwanda Is Urging for Enhancing Global Health Security Through Multisectoral One Health Strategy.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a devastating zoonotic mosquito-borne viral hemorrhagic fever disease that threats human and animal health and biodiversity in Africa, including in Rwanda. RVF is increasingly outbreaking in Africa, leading to devastating impacts on health, socioeconomic stability and growth, and food insecurity in the region, particularly among livestock-dependent communi-ties. This systematic review synthesizes existing evidence on RVF's epidemiology, transmission dynamics, and the prevention and control measures implemented in Rwanda. Our findings high-light the rapidly increasing

Of Lyme disease and machine learning in a One Health world.

OBJECTIVE: Lyme disease is a vector-borne emerging zoonosis in Ontario driven by human population growth and climate change. Lyme disease is also a prime example of the One Health concept. While little can be done to immediately reverse climate change and population growth, public health must resort to health communication as its best option for disease control until an effective vaccine becomes available. Disease surveillance enabling precision public health has an important role in this respect: one of the goals of disease surveillance is to forecast the future burden of disease to inform th

Tick-induced neurological disorders.

Diseases transmitted by ticks have been increasing in frequency and distribution, partly due to climate change. In the last decades, new tick-borne pathogens have been discovered that cause prominent neurologic disease. In this review, the impacts created by these discoveries insofar as nervous system involvement will be addressed. The effects of climate change ensure that this is a timely topic of medical importance. Tick bite paralysis causes direct neurological injury through a neurotoxin that leads to a dangerous clinical condition. Several pathogens can be transmitted by ticks of the genu

Current Status of Malaria Control and Elimination in Africa: Epidemiology, Diagnosis, Treatment, Progress and Challenges.

The African continent carries the greatest malaria burden in the world. Falciparum malaria especially has long been the leading cause of death in Africa. Climate, economic factors, geographical location, human intervention and unstable security are factors influencing malaria transmission. Due to repeated infections and early interventions, the proportion of clinically atypical malaria or asymptomatic plasmodium carriers has increased significantly, which easily lead to misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis. African countries have made certain progress in malaria control and elimination, including

Current and potential future impacts of food- and water-borne parasites in a changing world: A Norwegian perspective.

In 2021, the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food and Environment published a multi-criteria risk ranking of 20 potentially food-borne pathogens in Norway. The pathogens ranked included five parasite taxa (3 species, one genus, one family): Toxoplasma gondii, Echinococcus multilocularis, Giardia duodenalis, Cryptosporidium spp., and Anisakidae. Two of these, T. gondii and E. multilocularis, scored very highly (1st and 3rd place, respectively), Cryptosporidium was about midway (9th place), and G. duodenalis and Anisakidae ranked relatively low (15th and 20th place, respectively). Parasites w

A Heat Emergency: Urban Heat Exposure and Access to Refuge in Richmond, VA.

The urban heat island effect exacerbates independent climate change-induced shifts toward longer, stronger, and more frequent heat extremes. Environmental inequity, driven by a history of racially motivated urban planning policies, has led particular demographics to bear the worst impacts of urban heat exposure and thus also climate change. These impacts cause adverse health outcomes in the form of heat emergencies. Through a novel demographic and spatial analysis of heat-related illness Emergency Medical Services data from Richmond, Virginia, this study investigates the relationships between
