A Preliminary Prospective Study of an Escalation in 'Maximum Daily Drinks', Fronto-Parietal Circuitry and Impulsivity-Related Domains in Young Adult Drinkers.

Excessive alcohol use in young adults is associated with greater impulsivity and neurobiological alterations in executive control systems. The maximum number of drinks consumed during drinking occasions ('MaxDrinks') represents a phenotype linked to vulnerability of alcohol use disorders, and an increase, or 'escalation', in MaxDrinks may be indicative of greater risk for problematic drinking. Thirty-six young adult drinkers performed a Go/No-Go task during fMRI, completed impulsivity-related assessments, and provided monthly reports of alcohol use during a 12-month follow-up period. Participa

An ER-fMRI study of Russian inflectional morphology.

The generation of regular and irregular past tense verbs has long been a testing ground for different models of inflection in the mental lexicon. Behavioral studies examined a variety of languages, but neuroimaging studies rely almost exclusively on English and German data. In our fMRI experiment, participants inflected Russian verbs and nouns of different types and corresponding nonce stimuli. Irregular real and nonce verbs activated inferior frontal and inferior parietal regions more than regular verbs did, while no areas were more activated in the opposite comparison. We explain this activa

Feasibility of long-term cerebral and peripheral regional tissue oxygen saturation measurements.

The aim of this study was to analyse the feasibility of long-term measurements of cerebral (crSO2) and peripheral (prSO2) regional tissue oxygen saturation on the first day of life by determining the amount of artefacts and their influence on rSO2. Near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) measurements were performed fronto-parietal left (crSO2) and on the right forearm (prSO2). Arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2) was measured by pulse oximetry on the right wrist. Three criteria (C) were defined to identify artefacts (C1: missing values, C2: rSO2 jumping >15%, C3: rSO2 ≥ SpO2). The number of artefacts a

Investigating intrinsic connectivity networks using simultaneous BOLD and CBF measurements.

When the sensory cortex is stimulated and directly receiving afferent input, modulations can also be observed in the activity of other brain regions comprising spatially distributed, yet intrinsically connected networks, suggesting that these networks support brain function during task performance. Such networks can exhibit subtle or unpredictable task responses which can pass undetected by conventional general linear modelling (GLM). Additionally, the metabolic demand of these networks in response to stimulation remains incompletely understood. Here, we recorded concurrent BOLD and CBF measur

Mothers' electrophysiological, subjective, and observed emotional responding to infant crying: The role of secure base script knowledge.

This study examined the extent to which secure base script knowledge-reflected in the ability to generate narratives in which attachment-relevant events are encountered, a clear need for assistance is communicated, competent help is provided and accepted, and the problem is resolved-is associated with mothers' electrophysiological, subjective, and observed emotional responses to an infant distress vocalization. While listening to an infant crying, mothers (N = 108, M age = 34 years) lower on secure base script knowledge exhibited smaller shifts in relative left (vs. right) frontal EEG activati

Parsing the intrinsic networks underlying attention: a resting state study.

The attention system functionally modulates brain activity to exert control over thoughts, feelings and actions. Three distinct but mutually interacting components of attention have been hypothesized: alerting, which mediates the maintenance of a state of vigilance toward an upcoming stimulus; orienting, which supports the selection of sensory information, and executive control that is involved in detecting and resolving cognitive conflicts. The performance of tasks probing these components engages fronto-parietal and thalamic regions. Also, general attention has been associated with the activ

The influence of theta transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) on working memory storage and processing functions.

The study aimed to explore the role of the fronto-parietal brain network in working memory function--in temporary storage and manipulation of information. In a single blind sham controlled experiment 36 respondents solved different working memory tasks after theta transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) was applied to left frontal, left parietal and right parietal areas. Both verum tACS protocols stimulating parietal brain areas (target electrodes positioned at location P3, or P4) had a positive effect on WM storage capacity as compared with sham tACS, whereas no such influence was

Composite ganglioglioma/dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor: a clinicopathologic study of 8 cases.

Ganglioglioma and dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor are both low-grade glioneuronal neoplasms that most commonly occur in association with chronic epilepsy. Rare cases of tumors with composite features of ganglioglioma and dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor have been reported. We retrospectively reviewed the clinicopathologic features of 8 composite tumors (7 were female; median age, 20 years). All patients had chronic epilepsy and had tumors in either the temporal or the frontal lobe. Six patients are currently seizure-free (follow-up: median, 90 months). All tumors were multinodular

Simulating the cortical 3D visuomotor transformation of reach depth.

We effortlessly perform reach movements to objects in different directions and depths. However, how networks of cortical neurons compute reach depth from binocular visual inputs remains largely unknown. To bridge the gap between behavior and neurophysiology, we trained a feed-forward artificial neural network to uncover potential mechanisms that might underlie the 3D transformation of reach depth. Our physiologically-inspired 4-layer network receives distributed 3D visual inputs (1(st) layer) along with eye, head and vergence signals. The desired motor plan was coded in a population (3(rd) lay

Selective frontal neurodegeneration of the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) demonstrated by diffusion tensor tractography.

BACKGROUND: The clinical presentation in progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), an atypical parkinsonian disorder, includes varying degrees of frontal dysexecutive symptoms. Using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and tractography (DTT), we investigated whether diffusion changes and atrophy of the inferior fronto-occipital fasciculus (IFO) occurs in PSP and if these changes correlate with disease stage and clinical phenotype. The corticospinal tract (CST), which is often involved in PSP, was investigated for comparison. METHODS: DTI of the whole brain was performed with a 3 T MR scanner using a s

Atypical presentation of a novel Presenilin 1 R377W mutation: sporadic, late-onset Alzheimer disease with epilepsy and frontotemporal atrophy.

Mutations within Presenilin 1 (PSEN1) represent the most common cause of monogenic Alzheimer Disease (AD). The clinical phenotype is highly variable, even if early onset disease with an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance and presenting memory deficits usually occur. In the present work, we described the case of a late-onset AD patient, without any positive family history for dementia, and associated with seizures and behavioural symptoms. Structural and functional neuroimaging showed frontotemporal changes without posterior biparietal brain abnormalities. Cerebrospinal analysis was cons

Medio-frontal and anterior temporal abnormalities in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) during an acoustic antisaccade task as revealed by electro-cortical source reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent disorders in children and adolescence. Impulsivity is one of three core symptoms and likely associated with inhibition difficulties. To date the neural correlate of the antisaccade task, a test of response inhibition, has not been studied in children with (or without) ADHD. METHODS: Antisaccade responses to visual and acoustic cues were examined in nine unmedicated boys with ADHD (mean age 122.44 ± 20.81 months) and 14 healthy control children (mean age 115.64 ± 22.87 months, three girls) while an electro

White matter hyperintensities alter functional organization of the motor system.

Severe white matter hyperintensities (WMH) represent cerebral small vessel disease and predict functional decline in the elderly. We used fMRI to test if severe WMH impact on functional brain network organization even before clinical dysfunction. Thirty healthy right-handed/footed subjects (mean age, 67.8 ± 7.5 years) underwent clinical testing, structural MRI and fMRI at 3.0T involving repetitive right ankle and finger movements. Data were compared between individuals with absent or punctuate (n = 17) and early confluent or confluent (n = 13) WMH. Both groups did not differ in mobility or cog

Ipsilateral facial sensory and motor responses to basal fronto-temporal cortical stimulation: evidence suggesting direct activation of cranial nerves.

To clarify the generator mechanism of sensory and motor facial responses ipsilateral to electrical stimulation of the inferior fronto-temporal cortex in epilepsy patients. Out of 30 patients who have been evaluated with chronically implanted subdural electrodes for medically intractable partial seizure or brain tumor involving the basal frontal or temporal cortex, 4 patients (age ranging 24-57 years) showed sensory and motor responses in the ipsilateral face to high frequency electrical cortical stimulation of the inferior fronto-temporal cortex. We investigated motor evoked potentials (MEPs)

[Neuropathologic investigation in autopsies with special emphasis on findings in Alzheimer's disease].

Out of an average total of 1400 autopsies per year, neuropathological examinations were performed in 477 cases between 1997 and 1999 to investigate the incidence of dementias. The majority of the studied subjects were over 50 years old. Bielschowsky's and/or Gallyas's silver methods and, in some cases, protein tau (MAP) immunocytochemistry and amyloid staining were performed beside routine examination. Pathological changes were found in 212 of the 364 cases studied by the above methods but histological changes associated with dementia were only detected in 167 cases. The various forms of Alzhe

Left frontotemporal hyperperfusion in a patient with post-stroke mania.

A 78-year-old housewife with major depression developed a right-sided infarction in the territory of the middle cerebral arteries, followed by acute post-stroke mania. Comparison between pre- and post-stroke SPECT scans demonstrated a unique pattern of left orbitofrontal hyperperfusion with extensive right frontal hypoperfusion. A functional imbalance between right and left orbitofrontal cortices may be important in mania.

Monetary incentives enhance processing in brain regions mediating top-down control of attention.

To evaluate the effect of an abstract motivational incentive on top-down mechanisms of visual spatial attention, 10 subjects engaged in a target detection task and responded to targets preceded by spatially valid (predictive), invalid (misleading) or neutral central cues under three different incentive conditions: win money (WIN), lose money (LOSE), and neutral (neither gain nor lose). Activation in the posterior cingulate cortex was correlated with visual spatial expectancy, defined as the degree to which the valid cue benefited performance as evidenced by faster reaction times compared to no
