There have been marked increases in the numbers of patients with retinal detachments at individual centres in recent years and this is supported by the subjective impression of many experts. We therefore surveyed the literature on changes in the incidence of retinal detachments worldwide. This revealed quite significant methodological differences between the studies, so that it was difficult to achieve a conclusive comparison of the development of the incidence of retinal detachment. Despite these limitations, all data from recent studies suggest an increase in the number of retinal detachment

PURPOSE: To evaluate the changes in the angle of the AC and lens vault after IPCL implantation by AS-OCT in myopic patients.
METHODS: This was a prospective observational study involving 30 myopic eyes implanted with IPCL. AS-OCT was used to evaluate lens vault and AC angle parameters including anterior chamber angle, angle opening distance and trabecular-iris space area (TISA) at 1, 3 and 6 months postoperatively.
RESULTS: All 3 AC angle parameters were significantly reduced at the 1st postoperative month compared to preoperative values, but remained stable thereafter with no significant ch

In myopia, diabetes and ageing, fibrous vitreous liquefaction and degeneration is associated with the formation of opacities inside the vitreous body that cast shadows on the retina, appearing as 'floaters' to the patient. Vitreous opacities degrade contrast sensitivity function and can cause notable impairment in vision-related quality of life. Here we introduce 'nanobubble ablation' for safe destruction of vitreous opacities. Following intravitreal injection, hyaluronic acid-coated gold nanoparticles and indocyanine green, which is widely used as a dye in vitreoretinal surgery, spontaneously

The relationship between vision and academic performance has been discussed for a long time, with special emphasis on visual factors associated with learning problems. The objective of this pilot study is to obtain an initial idea about the evolution and the impact of refractive errors on school-aged children. A visual examination was performed on 252 children between the ages of 6 and 11 years, which consisted of objective refraction, subjective refraction, and accommodative and binocular tests. No significant differences were observed regarding the refractive state when taking academic perfo

INTRODUCTION: 4H leukodystrophy, one of POLR3-related leukodystrophy, is a rare hereditary brain white matter disease caused by the pathogenic biallelic variations in POLR3A, POLR3B, or POLR1C. Hypomyelination, hypodontia, and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism is mainly presented in patients with 4H leukodystrophy.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Here, we reported the brother and the sister with new compound heterozygous (c.1615G>T and c.165-167del) with various degrees of phenotypes including dysbasia, myopia, dental abnormal, and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.
DIAGNOSIS: The brother and sister were diagnose

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most common prescription drugs for inflammation, and topical NSAIDs are often used in ophthalmology to reduce pain, photophobia, inflammation, and edema. In recent years, many published reports have found that NSAIDs play an important role in the treatment of retinal neurodegenerative diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy (DR), glaucoma, pathological myopia, and retinitis pigmentosa (RP). The aim of the current review is to provide an overview of the role of various NSAIDs in the treatment of r

Gyrate atrophy (GA) of the choroid and retina is a rare autosomal recessive genetic condition characterized by elevation of the plasma level of the amino acid ornithine due to deficiency of the enzyme ornithine ketoacid aminotransferase. Accumulation of ornithine occurs in various body tissues but leads primarily to characteristic ophthalmic manifestations including myopia, cataract, progressive chorioretinal atrophy, and macular changes. Patients usually present with night blindness that starts in the first decade of life followed by visual field constriction and eventually diminution of the

We report a case of a 40-year-old female with keratoconus and high myopia who had previous ICRS implantation in both eyes (OU) and was intolerant to contact lenses. Manifest refraction was -8.50 -1.50 × 95 (20/25--) in right eye (OD) and -9.50 -2.50 × 60 (20/70--) in left eye (OS). A topography-guided transepithelial-photorefractive keratectomy (ttPRK) was performed to correct high-order aberrations on OS, resulting in corneal surface and coma improvement, and CDVA achieved 20/30. Correction of residual ametropia was performed with an iris-fixated toric phakic lens in OU. CDVA improved to 20/2

Acute zonal occult outer retinopathy (AZOOR) is a presumed inflammatory disorder with outer retinal dysfunction. Typically, the onset is acute and it is unilateral, with symptoms of photopsias and nasal field loss; scotoma is usually contiguous with the optic nerve. Later, the other eye is involved in nearly three fourths of patients. The central vision remains good in most cases. Patients are usually young women with myopia. Fundus: May be normal in the beginning, but may show a grayish-white line at the border of normal and involved retina, usually in peripapillary area. This line disappears

Currently, the number of chronic diseases has increased due to increasing in life expectancy of population. Among them, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the most prevalent and responsible for the high mortality and morbidity rates. Patients with CVD have metabolic, hemodynamic, and musculoskeletal changes. There is a debate regarding the correct term for musculoskeletal changes that affect this group of patients; therefore, we found in literature myopia, muscular atrophy, cardiac cachexia, and sarcopenia. However, although there is no standardization in relation to correct term, these musculo

Congenital cataracts are lens opacities that are already present at birth or are developing in the first years of life. Treatment consists of the surgical removal of the lens. Bilateral cataract deeply impairs vision, preventing the development of physiological reflex fixation and causes the development of nystagmus about 3 months of age. This nystagmus persists even after the surgical removal of cataracts without allowing often >0,1 visual acuity despite adequate aperture correction. Intraocular lens implants in children under the age of 1 are subject to discussion. Presents the patient's cur

Hypotony maculopathy is a sight-threatening complication after trabeculectomy. We report on a 34-year-old man with juvenile open-angle glaucoma and high myopia, who developed hypotony maculopathy 14 years after trabeculectomy without bleb leak. This represents the longest known period from trabeculectomy to the development of hypotony maculopathy without bleb leak. The possible mechanisms for the development of late-onset hypotony maculopathy in the highly myopic patient are progressive scleral thinning, reduced scleral rigidity, and scleral morphologic change with aging. These changes might w

We performed a literature review comparing multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation with pseudophakic monovision to treat presbyopia. Multifocal IOLs utilize refractive or diffractive principles to treat both distance and near vision, with a single lens implant. Monovision uses traditional monofocal lens implants to treat the dominant eye for emmotropia, and the non-dominant eye for myopia. This planned anisometropia is designed to enhance intermediate or near vision. Generally, distance vision was similar with both types of lens implantation, near vision was better with multifocal IOLs,

An 80-year-old Chinese man with high myopia and a history of right eye cataract extraction and superior peripheral iridectomy developed peripheral corneal oedema after a period of aphakia. The peripheral corneal oedema was static over years and did not progress to involve central cornea hence his visual acuity remained stable. The condition was compatible with the relatively rare Brown-McLean syndrome. Specular microscopy showed normal endothelial cell density in the oedematous peripheral as well as central cornea. While anterior segment optical coherence tomography demonstrated the cross-sect

Esotropia is the most common form of strabismus seen in clinic. Accommodation is known to be an important precipitating factor, and its management is usually not complex. In this paper, I have reviewed a dozen circumstances in which the presentation was complicated. For some patients, the cause of fleeting symptoms was elusive and had to be determined through careful sensory and motor testing. In others, the presentation was indicative of serious underlying pathology that warranted further investigation. Lastly, restrictive conditions may be erroneously thought to be neurological, and some of

To evaluate the prevalence of ocular abnormalities among children with cerebral palsy, 140 patients with age between 6 months and 16 years were selected and the overall incidence of ocular abnormalities in this study was 42.1%. Two major ocular abnormalities identified in these cases were strabismus in 36.4%. Myopia was detected in 12.9% children while hypermetropia in 8.6% and astigmatism in 3.6% cases. Non-glaucomatous optic atrophy was present in 10.7% cases and nystagmus in 9.3% cases. Raised intra-ocular pressure was detected in 2.1% cases. Cortical visual impairment was seen in 20.7% chi
