Six patients with early sonographic diagnosis of invasive placenta previa increta/percreta before fetal viability were offered hysterectomy to terminate the pregnancy with prophylactic internal iliac artery embolization (IIAE). INTRODUCTION: Critically low blood donation rates and recurrent shortages in the blood supply have become pressing challenges in transfusion medicine. Xenotransfusion using porcine red blood cells (pRBCs) represents a promising alternative; however, risks of immune rejection and infection necessitate the development of genetically engineered porcine models - a process that is time-consuming, costly, and technically complex. Hydroxyurea is an antimetabolite drug that induces fetal haemoglobin in sickle cell disease. However, its clinical usefulness in β-thalassaemia is unproven. We conducted a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of hydroxyurea in transfusion-dependent β-thalassaemia. BACKGROUND: Patients with the homozygous sickle cell disease have increased perioperative mortality. Some indications like heart valve surgery, may justify an exchange blood transfusion to reduce the proportion of hemoglobin S (HbS) and complications.

One hundred eight cases of cesarean hysterectomy are analyzed. Important differences in operative complications and postoperative morbidity between elective and emergency cases are emphasized. Elective cases had a higher incidence of urinary tract injury but a much lower incidence of excessive blood loss, blood transfusion, and febrile morbidity.
