PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This is a comprehensive review of the current knowledge on predominant immune cell phenotypes involved in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM).
RECENT FINDINGS: Major circulating immune cell subpopulations described in IIM encompass the lymphocyte compartment. An unbalance in T cell subsets seems to consistently affect the peripheral and muscle compartment, with a predominance of CD4+ T and B cells in dermatomyositis, CD8+ T cells in polymyositis/inclusion body myositis (IBM) and novel findings highlighting novel proinflammatory T subsets, that is, CD8+Tbet+ and CD28- T

C cell hyperplasia is considered a precursor lesion for hereditary forms of medullary thyroid carcinoma. It has therefore been suggested as a morphological marker to distinguish hereditary from sporadic medullary thyroid carcinoma and to triage genetic testing in resource poor settings. However, numerous definitions for C cell hyperplasia have been suggested, and there is surprisingly little data regarding the number of C cells present in thyroid glands removed for conditions other than medullary carcinoma. We therefore sought to investigate the specificity of different criteria for C cell hyp

BACKGROUND: Granular cell tumors are rare neoplasms which can occur in any part of the body. Granular cell tumors of the orbit account for only 3 % of all granular cell tumor cases. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging of the orbit have proven useful for diagnosing orbital tumors. However, the rarity of intraorbital granular cell tumors poses a significant diagnostic challenge for both clinicians and radiologists.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 37-year-old Chinese woman with a rare intraocular granular cell tumor of her right eye presenting with diplopia, proptosis, an

The regenerative potential of stem cells from various sources has been under intense investigation in the experimental models of cerebral ischemia. To end up with a restorative therapeutic treatment, it is crucial to get the cell transplants to the site of injury. Here, we evaluated the feasibility of small animal SPECT/CT in assessing the definite accumulation of (111)In-oxine-labeled human embryonic stem (ES) cell-derived neural progenitors and rat hippocampal progenitors after intravenous or intra-arterial administration (femoral vein vs. common carotid artery) in middle cerebral artery occ

Sickle cell disease displays a unique progression in the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia, where splenomegaly with hypersplenism is noted with high frequency in the adolescent and adult patients. The late persistence of splenomegaly although likely reflects the milder progression of sickle cell disease in this region; nevertheless, it predisposes the patients to increased morbidity. The present study documents the characteristic clinicopathological features of splenomegaly associated with sickle cell disease in the Al-Hassa region of Eastern province Saudi Arabia. Forty-four cases of sickle ce

Chemokines are cytokines that are involved in the movement of leukocytes and the occurrence of immune responses. It has recently been noted that these cytokines play a role in the movement of cancer cells to different parts of the body and create a suitable environment [i.e. (pre) metastatic niche] for their growth and proliferation. We studied the role of chemokines in the metastasis of cancer cells, as well as their involvement in the proliferation and growth of these cells. Relevant literature was identified by a PubMed search (2005-2017) of English language papers using the terms 'chemokin

Activated T lymphocytes give rise to daughter cells that can persist for decades in our body, while retaining their ability to provide a strong immune response. Recent advances have highlighted the fact that a significant portion of these memory cells are found directly in peripheral tissues and lack the capacity to migrate to the blood. We have recently shown that these cells, called Tissue Resident Memory T cells (T(RM)), play a major role in the immune response, regardless of the antigenic challenge. They have a backup of circulating central memory T cells (T(CM)) that bear the exact same T

All adults have stem cells in their body that can act like embryonic stem cells when given an appropriate stimulus. When VEGF is given, the bone marrow is stimulated to release stem cells, which grow new coronary arteries and also replenish damaged or dead cardiomyocytes. Transplanting autologous bone marrow stem cells into coronary arteries reduced infarct size, improved the prognosis following an acute MI and in patients with chronic congestive heart failure. Since patients are the source of their own stem cells, there would be a ready supply, with no rejection or immunological issues, and p

The immune system plays a crucial role in protecting the body from harmful bacterial, viral infections and vital for cancer suppression. Dendritic cells (DCs) are indispensable mediators that facilitate the connection between innate and acquired immunity via antigen presentation and cytokine production. One of the major intestinal microbial metabolites of green tea polyphenols, 5-(3',5'-dihydroxyphenyl)-γ-valerolactone (EGC-M5), enhances T cell activity. However, the detailed underlying mechanisms remain unknown. Here, we revealed that the oral administration of EGC-M5 increases and activates

The giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) belongs to the superorder Xenarthra and is distributed throughout Central and South America. This animal is listed as 'vulnerable' on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species. Studies on the reproduction of this species are essential because of its peculiarities; however, there is a lack of information on its reproductive aspects and the biotechnologies that can be applied to it. Morphological and histopathological descriptions of the reproductive organs of Myrmecophaga tridactyla are fundamental for determ

The ocular surface and orbit constitute unique microenvironments in the human body. Current advances in molecular research have deepened our understanding of tumor development in these regions. Tumors exhibit greater heterogeneity compared to normal tissues, as revealed by pathological and histological examinations. The tumor microenvironment (TME) plays a crucial role in the proliferation and progression of cancer cells. Factors from the external environment or the body's own inflammation and microcirculation interact within the TME, maintaining a delicate balance. Disruption of this balance,

Extracellular vesicles (EVs), carriers of molecular signals, are considered a critical link in maintaining homeostasis in mammals. Currently, there is growing interest in studying the role of EVs, including exosomes (subpopulation of EVs), in animals of other evolutionary levels, including marine invertebrates. We have studied the possibility of obtaining appropriate preparations of EVs from whole-body extract of holothuria Eupentacta fraudatrix using a standard combination of centrifugation and ultracentrifugation. However, the preparations were heavily polluted, which did not allow us to con

Solar radiation induces the formation of cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) and other UV photoproducts in the genomic DNA of epidermal keratinocytes. Although CPDs have been detected in urine from UV- and sun-exposed individuals, the pathway by which they arrive there and the mechanisms by which UV-induced DNA damage in the skin has systemic effects throughout the body are not clear. Consistent with previous reports that DNA associates with small extracellular vesicles that are released from a variety of cell types, we observed that a small fraction of CPDs formed in genomic DNA after UVB ex

The El Plomo mummy was a pre-Columbian Incan child who was found mummified in the Andes Mountains above an altitude of 17,700 feet. In the environment, natural mummification occurred due to low temperatures and strong winds. Dating measurements (relative dating) by experts from the National Museum of Natural History of Chile established that the mummified body corresponds the Inca period (1,450 to 1,500 AD). In 2003, the body was transferred to the University of Chile Medical School for exhaustive medical examination. Tissue samples from the right quadriceps muscle were extracted and fixed in

The molecular underpinnings of the oxygen sensitivity of the carotid body Type I cells are becoming better defined as research begins to identify potential interactions between previously separate theories. Nevertheless, the field of oxygen chemoreception still presents the general observer with a bewildering array of potential signalling pathways by which a fall in oxygen levels might initiate Type I cell activation. The purpose of this brief review is to address five of the current oxygen sensing hypotheses: the lactate-Olfr 78 hypothesis of oxygen chemotransduction; the role mitochondrial A

The precise strategies that intracellular pathogens use to exit host cells have a direct impact on their ability to disseminate within a host, transmit to new hosts, and engage or avoid immune responses. The obligate intracellular bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis exits the host cell by two distinct exit strategies, lysis and extrusion. The defining characteristics of extrusions, and advantages gained by Chlamydia within this unique double-membrane structure, are not well understood. Here, we define extrusions as being largely devoid of host organelles, comprised mostly of Chlamydia elementary b

Primary lymphoma of the liver is a very rare malignancy. Most often, these lesions consist of diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that occurs mostly in immunodeficient patients. To prove the primary nature of a hepatic lesion, a systemic lymphoproliferative disease should be ruled out. Secondary liver involvement during Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma is frequent. In advanced cases the incidence varies from 25% to 50%. The present case describes the MRI features of a primary lymphoma of the liver presenting as a solitary nodule. The primary lymphoma presents as a T2-hyperintense h

The mechanisms whereby X irradiation induces palatal clefting were investigated in vivo and in an in vitro organ culture system. When pregnant mice at day 12.5 of gestation were exposed to a 4-Gy dose of whole-body X radiation, the incidence of palatal clefting in their offspring was 91%. The volume of the irradiated palatal shelves was too low for them to make contact with each other. On gestational day 13.5 after labeling, bromodeoxyuridine-positive cells were sparse and apoptotic cells were abundant in the irradiated shelves. To prevent secondary effects of irradiation from the injured mate

Immunoglobulin A and IgM are subjected to epithelial transport only when they are produced as polymers with incorporated J chain. Immunocytes containing various Ig isotypes and associated J chain in gastric mucosa, as well as IgA-degrading protease activity in Helicobacter pylori cultures, were examined. Gastric body specimens from 15 H. pylori-positive and 14 H. pylori-negative patients were studied by paired immunofluorescence for IgA, IgA1, IgA2, IgG, or IgM and concurrent cellular J chain. H. pylori isolates were incubated with IgA1 or secretory IgA and examined by immunoelectrophoresis fo
