Relationship between masseter muscle size and maxillary morphology.

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between masseter muscle size and craniofacial morphology, focusing on the maxilla. Twenty-four patients (11 males and 13 females; mean age 27.6 ± 5.6 years) underwent cephalometric analyses. Ultrasonography was used to measure the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the masseter muscle and bite force was measured using pressure sensitive film. The results showed that CSA-relaxed was positively correlated with upper anterior face height (UAFH)/total anterior face height (TAFH) and negatively with lower anterior face height (LAFH)/TAFH and LAFH

Postnatal-onset microcephaly: pathogenesis, patterns of growth, and prediction of outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Although children with postnatal-onset microcephaly (POM) generally have poor development, we speculated that better somatic growth would predict better development in these children. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We followed 57 children with POM for an average of 4.2 years (13 encephaloclastic, 14 dysgenetic, 6 with Rett syndrome, 24 idiopathic) and calculated the developmental quotient (DQ) at each visit (DQ > 0.70 was considered normal). SD scores (SDS) for measurements were analyzed using a repeated measures mixed-effects model to assess effect of weight, height, head circumference (HC

Predictive value of molar bite force on Class II functional appliance treatment outcomes.

Sagittal intermaxillary changes brought about by functional appliances show large inter-individual variation. One factor that may in part explain these differences is the masticatory musculature and its functional capacity. The aims of this study were to investigate changes in maximal molar bite force during functional appliance treatment and to assess the influence of pre-treatment maximal molar bite force on treatment outcomes with functional appliances used in Class II malocclusion children. Twenty-five children (17 males and 8 females), aged 9-13 years, with a Class II malocclusion and inc

The stability of an alar cinch suture after Le Fort I and mandibular osteotomies in Japanese patients with Class III malocclusions.

We previously reported a modified technique for the placement of symmetrical cinch sutures after switching from a nasal to an oral endotracheal tube. We undertook a study to assess the effectiveness of our technique and the stability of changes in the nasolabial morphology after bimaxillary surgery. The study group comprised 30 patients aged 17-36 years who had skeletal Class III malocclusion. All patients had bimaxillary surgery with an alar base cinch suture and V-Y closure. The nasal region was measured directly or on cephalograms before, and 1 week and 1 year after operation. The suture di

Three-dimensional evaluation of craniofacial asymmetry: an analysis using computed tomography.

3D image technology provides a very effective tool for evaluating, characterising, and drawing up the surgical treatment plan for potential orthognathic surgery patients. Patients with dysmorphic syndromes or incorrect jaw positions frequently show facial asymmetry. The objective of this cross-sectional survey is to evaluate facial asymmetry by means of three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) reconstructions. Twenty one consecutive patients were diagnosed using a CT scan. 3D reconstructions of the patients' skulls were made and then measurements taken of different craniometric landmarks and

[A novel protocol for hyperdivergent Class II surgery: innovation or breaking a taboo?].

The widespread distribution via Internet of images and even videos showing facial surgery has considerably contributed to our knowledge of orthodontic-surgical treatment. The never-ending increase in the number of patients receiving surgery has given us food for thought and statistics. If we are to progress further, we need to innovative in the area of surgical technique as well as in our clinical and psychological approach to patients. We have endeavoured to move forward from the idea of "straightforward" malocclusion repair to that of "morphofunctional surgery of the face" by emphasizing the
