The self-concept of children and adolescents with neurofibromatosis type 1.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a genetic disorder associated with cognitive deficits, learning problems, medical complications and cosmetic disfigurement. Despite the wide-ranging impact of NF1, very few studies have examined the psychosocial adjustment of individuals with NF1, and in particular, self-concept. The aims of this study were threefold: (i) to examine the self-concept of children and adolescents with NF1; (ii) to compare the self-concept of children with NF1 (NF1 only), children with NF1 and learning difficulties [NF1 + LA (low achievement)], and children with NF1 an

Racial and ethnic differences in ADHD and LD in young school-age children: parental reports in the National Health Interview Survey.

OBJECTIVES: Racial and ethnic disparities have been documented for many physical health outcomes in children. Less is known, however, about disparities in behavioral and learning disorders in children. This study uses data from a national health survey to examine racial and ethnic differences in identified attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning disability (LD). METHODS: The 1997-2001 National Health Interview Surveys obtained information from parents about the health and sociodemographic characteristics of children. Using these data, prevalence rates of identified ADHD a

Selective effect of inhibition of literal or numerical irrelevant information in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or arithmetic learning disorder (ALD).

This study investigated reasons why children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or arithmetic learning disorder (ALD) have difficulties in solving arithmetic word problems. In particular, the aim of this study was to verify whether these difficulties are due to a working memory deficit and defective inhibition of irrelevant information included in the problem wording. Furthermore, the study was geared to test whether children with ADHD or ALD have a specific disability in recalling and handling numerical or literal information. In an attempt to provide an answer to these ques

Semantic and phonological loop effects on verbal working memory in middle-age adults with mental retardation.

Semantic and phonological loop effects on verbal working memory were examined among middle-age adults with Down syndrome and those with unspecified mental retardation in the context of Baddeley's working memory model. Recall was poorer for phonologically similar, semantically similar, and long words compared to recall of dissimilar short words. Compared to their peers, participants with Down syndrome had poorer recall in all categories except phonologically similar words. Most interestingly, semantic similarity lowered recall scores only in participants with Down syndrome. This selective effec

Genotype-environment correlations for language-related abilities: implications for typical and atypical learners.

Recent behavioral genetic research has shown that genetic propensities are associated with individual differences in experiences, and thus, what may appear to be environmental effects can reflect genetic influence. This study examines passive genotype-environment correlations (GECs) for language-related abilities by comparing environment-child language associations in adoptive and nonadoptive families. The results provide evidence for the genetic mediation of the association between home environmental variables, such as the provision of toys and games, maternal involvement, and degree of intel

[Neurocognitive and pharmacological approach to specific learning disorders].

INTRODUCTION: Specific learning disorders are distinguished from general development disorders since, in general, only a certain number of processing mechanisms are involved whilst the remainder are unaffected. DEVELOPMENT: The classification proposed by the DSM-IV takes a step towards clinical understanding and use of a common nomenclature. However, neuropsychological assessment is essential to understanding clinical subtypes. The neuro-cognitive approach, when taking into account the processing systems affected or involved, should include the strategies and principles of a cognitive-behavio

The effects of increasing resource demand on vigilance performance in adults with schizophrenia or developmental attentional/learning disorders: a preliminary study.

The goal of this study was to assess whether degree of information processing load differentially affects vigilance performance in patients with schizophrenia as compared to normal controls or patients with other attentional disorders. We contrasted the performance of clinically stable outpatients with schizophrenia (n = 18), with that of normal controls (n = 17), and adults with developmental attentional/learning disorders (n = 13) on simple and demanding versions of a visual continuous performance test (CPT). Patients with schizophrenia were significantly impaired on both versions of the CPT

Classification of vowels and consonants by individuals with moderate mental retardation: development of arbitrary relations via match-to-sample training with compound stimuli.

This study explored whether an identity-matching-based stimulus equivalence procedure could be used to teach vowel and consonant stimulus classes to 2 adolescent females with moderate mental retardation. Delayed match-to-sample trials presented a compound sample stimulus consisting of printed letters and a spoken word ("vowel" or "consonant"). The correct comparison stimulus matched only one of the letters in the compound sample. Subsequently, test trials assessed whether arbitrary relations had formed among the individual stimuli from each compound sample and whether stimuli from different co

Practitioner review: early developmental language delay: what, if anything, should the clinician do about it?

Early developmental language delay is characterized by slow development of language in preschoolers. The condition is frequent among two- and three-year-olds, causes concern among parents, and generates differences of opinion as to significance among informed professionals. Poorer long-term outcomes are much more likely if language delay persists until the later preschool years, and if the delay is not specific to language and/or includes problems in understanding. Specific language delay in the preschool period is better characterized as a risk factor than a disorder; most children with speci

A controlled community study of movement disorder in people with learning difficulties on anti-psychotic medication.

The results of a community-based study measuring the occurrence of movement disorders in a population of people with learning difficulties treated with antipsychotic medication are presented. This group was compared with an age- and sex-matched group with a similar degree of handicap, who were not treated with antipsychotic medication. When medication was given within British National Formulary Guidelines, no significant increase in movement disorders in the treated group was found. The relevance of this to psychiatric practice is discussed.

Neuropsychological profile of children with neurofibromatosis, brain tumor, or both.

Neurofibromatosis type 1, a common autosomal dominant genetic disorder, is associated with numerous physical and medical anomalies as well as an increased incidence of learning disability. Tumors of the central nervous system have been estimated to occur in 15%, but their contribution to neuropsychological status is unknown. This study examines the relative contribution of neurofibromatosis and brain tumor to the cognitive profile of children with neurofibromatosis. A comprehensive battery of neuropsychological and behavioral tests was administered to a group of 65 children with neurofibromato

Learning and memory in monozygotic twins discordant for schizophrenia.

Learning and memory were assessed in 24 monozygotic (MZ) pairs of individuals discordant for schizophrenia or delusional disorder and seven normal pairs of MZ twins. On declarative memory tasks, the affected group displayed a pattern that might best be characterized as dysmnesic in that they performed significantly worse than the discordant unaffected group on story recall, paired associated learning, and visual recall of designs, but they learned over time, had relatively preserved recognition memory, and did not show profoundly accelerated rates of forgetting. Effortful, volitional retrieval

Developmental language disorders: evidence for a basic processing deficit.

Although there is still some disagreement whether developmental reading and language disorders are neurologically based, recent research provides increasing evidence that these disorders may be due to both abnormal cerebral lateralization patterns and neurological pathology at the cellular level. Technological advances in the field of neuroscience have led to increasing knowledge about brain-behavior relationships, particularly in the area of higher cognitive functions. Hypotheses about the underlying causes of the functional deficits characterizing developmental language and reading disorders

The Boston Teacher Questionnaire. 2. Assessments of validity.

We assessed the validity of the Boston Teacher Questionnaire in a sample of 3451 9-year-old children. Those identified by the questionnaire as having a learning difficulty syndrome were compared to those without any characteristic of that syndrome. The validity reference measures were individually administered neuropsychological assessments at age 7 years and a group-administered reading achievement test at age 9 years. Girls and boys with the reading syndrome had much lower reading scores at age 9 years than did their peers. Boys, but not girls, with the arithmetic syndrome were much more lik

Neurodevelopmental study of writing disorders in middle childhood.

This study investigated patterns of neurodevelopmental dysfunction in children with writing disorders (WD). Records of children, ages 9 to 15 years, referred to a school problems clinic were examined. Using teacher questionnaire information, including ratings of writing legibility, mechanics, rate, linguistic sophistication, and spelling, 99 cases of WD were found. Sixty-three children without WD served as clinic controls. A cluster analysis revealed four discrete subtypes of WD and two non-WD control clusters. The four WD clusters were found to have different patterns of writing and reading c

Phobic anxiety and clumsiness in a 10-year-old girl.

During assessment of a girl with a long-standing phobic state, it was found that she also had previously unrecognised perceptuo-motor problems, which were associated with continuing problems in balance and spatial awareness. Her phobia improved after a desensitisation programme, but the physical disorder persisted, despite physiotherapy. The authors conclude that the girl's phobic anxiety may have had its origin in her experience of the perceptual disorder during development.

A controlled study of Tourette syndrome. I. Attention-deficit disorder, learning disorders, and school problems.

Tourette syndrome (TS) is a common, hereditary, neurobehavioral disorder of childhood. To determine the frequency of various behavioral manifestations, we have compared 47 random normal controls to 246 patients with TS, 17 with attention-deficit disorder (ADD), and 15 with ADD secondary to a TS gene (ADD 2(0) TS). All subjects were examined prospectively with a 425-item questionnaire based on the Diagnostic Interview Schedule and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM III). The TS patients were divided into grade 1 (too mild to treat [17.5%]), grade 2 (requiring treatme

Cyclophosphamide in the male rat: behavioral effects in the adult offspring.

Cyclophosphamide in a daily dose of 10 mg/kg was injected intraperitoneally in male Wistar rats for 15 days. Two rats each time were killed for testis examination at regular intervals within 100 days following treatment (over 2 spermatogenetic cycles). One hundred days after the end of the treatment, the other rats, whose spermatogenesis had recovered in the meantime, were mated with 3-month-old females. Offspring were evaluated in regard to the mean number per litter, sex ratio, frequency of gross external malformations, growth pattern, mortality in the first 4 months of life and reproductive
