Monitoring the thoracic sagittal curvature in kyphoscoliosis with surface topography: a trend analysis of 57 patients.

Records of Quantec measurements of tlie kypliotic curvature of the back were reviewed for all patients attending the children's orthopaedic clinic who were referred for back shape measurements. Of these, 57 children had five or more preoperative visits allowing trends to be calculated. Linear trends were found in 30 of the patients, with gradients ranging from 1.1 degree/yr to 7.2(0)1/yr. On average, the scatter of measurements about the trend line, or about the mean value in the other 27 cases, compared well with that expected from repeatability studies but the amount of scatter varied from o

Congenital breast asymmetry: subjective and objective assessment.

There is currently no standard objective method for the assessment of developmental breast asymmetry. The results of corrective surgery in 24 patients with congenital breast deformities were evaluated subjectively (symmetry scores by patients and panels of observers), and objectively (linear measurements of nipple position and stereophotogrammetrically determined breast volumes). The latter were obtained using a newly developed prototype computer based technique (Bodymap). This study is the first reported use of stereophotogrammetry in assessing results of surgery for the correction of congeni

Three-Dimensional Facial Morphology in Patients with Craniofacial Microsomia and Microtia.

BACKGROUND: Craniofacial microsomia (CFM) is classified using the subjective orbit, mandible, ear, nerve, and soft tissue (OMENS) tool. Digital stereophotogrammetry (ie, 3-dimensional [3D] photography) can be used to capture facial shape objectively. This case-control study assessed the applicability of 3D photography in distinguishing between patients with CFM and individuals without a craniofacial condition, as well as classifying the severity of facial involvement. METHODS: The 3D photographs of patients with CFM or microtia from Amsterdam UMC, Radboudumc, or Great Ormond Street Hospital,

Primary Rhinoplasty Does Not Interfere with Nasal Growth: A Long-Term Three-Dimensional Morphometric Outcome Study in Patients with Unilateral Cleft.

BACKGROUND: Primary rhinoplasty has not been universally adopted because the potential for nasal growth impairment remains an unsolved issue in cleft care. This study's purpose was to assess the long-term effects of primary rhinoplasty performed by a single surgeon in a cohort of patients with a unilateral cleft lip nose deformity. METHODS: Three-dimensional nasal morphometric measurements (linear, angular, proportional, surface area, and volume) were collected from consecutive patients (cleft group, n = 52; mean age, 19 ± 1 year) who had undergone primary rhinoplasty with the use of the Noor

Stereophotogrammetric three-dimensional photography is an accurate and precise planimetric method for the clinical visualization and quantification of human papilloma virus-induced skin lesions.

BACKGROUND: The quantification of human papilloma virus (HPV)-induced skin lesions is essential for the clinical assessment of the course of disease and the response to treatment. However, clinical assessments that measure dimensions of lesions using a caliper do not provide complete insight into three-dimensional (3D) lesions, and its inter-rater variability is often poor. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to validate a stereophotogrammetric 3D camera system for the quantification of HPV-induced lesions. METHODS: The camera system was validated for accuracy, precision and interoperator a

Influence of non-traumatic thoracic and lumbar vertebral fractures on sagittal spine alignment assessed by radiation-free spinometry.

UNLABELLED: Due to missing indications for specific diagnostics, the majority of non-symptomatic vertebral fractures are not diagnosed. This study shows the ability of radiation-free spinometry to assess sagittal spine parameters to raise suspicion for new non-traumatic thoracic and lumbar vertebral fractures and indicate specific diagnostics. INTRODUCTION: The primary aim of this study was to investigate the accuracy of radiation-free spinometry to predict new non-traumatic vertebral fractures (VF) by the assessment of thoracic kyphosis (TK), lumbar lordosis (LL), and trunk inclination. Picture perfect? Reliability of craniofacial anthropometry using three-dimensional digital stereophotogrammetry.

BACKGROUND: Quantification of facial characteristics is important for research in dysmorphology, otolaryngology, oral and maxillofacial, and plastic surgical disciplines, among others. Three-dimensional surface imaging systems offer a quick and practical method for quantifying craniofacial variation and appear to be highly reliable. However, some sources of measurement error have not yet been thoroughly evaluated. METHODS: The authors assessed the reliability of using stereophotogrammetry for measuring craniofacial characteristics in 40 individuals, including 20 without craniofacial condition

RSA-measured inducible micromotion and interface modeling with finite element methods.

Osteolysis is the main cause of aseptic loosening and stem failure. The mechanism that leads to osteolysis is poorly understood; pressure generation caused by reversible stem micromotion may play an important role. We aimed to determine whether dynamically inducible micromotion occurs in vivo at the prosthesis-cement interface and to use these data to develop and confirm a finite element representation of this interface. Dynamically inducible micromotion was measured using radiostereometric analysis in 21 hips implanted with an Exeter stem, at 3 months and 12 months postoperatively, by changin

A new method for volumetric measurement of orthodontically induced root resorption craters.

This method was designed to quantify root resorption on human premolar root surfaces induced by orthodontic forces by volume. Light (25 g) or heavy (225 g) orthodontic forces were applied to 20 first maxillary premolars in 10 human subjects. The contralateral teeth of the subjects served as controls. All teeth were extracted after 28 d of experimentation and prepared for imaging. A pair of stereo scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images (+/-3 degrees ) of resorption craters was captured and imported into an image analysis software package. The images were aligned and grayscale depth maps of t

[Stereovideographic evaluation of the postural geometry of healthy and scoliotic patients].

Idiopathic scoliosis principally characterised by a deformation of the vertebral column can also be associated to postural abnormalities. The validity and reliability of current quantitative postural evaluations has not been thoroughly documented, frequently limited by a two dimensional view of the patient, and do not include the whole posture of the patient. The purpose of this study is to 1) quantify within and between-session reliability of a stereovideographic Postural Geometry (PG) evaluation and 2) to investigate the sensitivity of this technique for the postural evaluation of scoliosis

Computerized morphometric analysis of the femoral diaphyseal canal.

The constant increase in the use of hip arthroplasty and the continuous search for the best possible adaptation of the implant to femoral anatomy have led to the development of methods of radiographic analysis that are increasingly precise and reliable. Among these the methods that include the use of traditional radiograms-despite their limits-deserve a place of importance. In fact, these methods offer the advantage of being easy to apply and of allowing for a comparison to be made with pre-existing files. Computer science is useful in this field, in particular, computerized analysis, both mor

Functional performance and patient satisfaction comparison between a 3D printed and a standard transradial prosthesis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The delay between amputation and prosthesis fitting contributes to the high rate of prosthetic abandonment despite advances in technology. Three-dimensional (3D) printing has allowed for the rapid fabrication of prostheses. Allowing individuals with amputations to interact with a prosthesis shortly after their procedure may reduce rejection chances. The purpose of the current investigation is to compare functional outcomes and patient satisfaction between a standard transradial prosthesis fitted in a clinic with a 3D-printed prosthesis fitted remotely. The standard prosthesis featu

Accuracy of implant abutment level digital impressions using stereophotogrammetry in edentulous jaws: an in vitro pilot study.

BACKGROUND: In edentulous jaws, factors such as the number of implants, cross-arch distribution, and the angle among implants may affect the accuracy of the implant impression. This study explored factors influencing the accuracy of implant abutment-level digital impressions using stereophotogrammetry in edentulous jaws. METHODS: Two standard all-on-4 and all-on-6 models of edentulous jaws were constructed in vitro. In the stereophotogrammetry group (PG), the implant digital impression was made using stereophotogrammetry and saved as an STL file. In the conventional group (CNV), the impressio
