In this paper, we develop and validate an osteometry-based mechanistic approach to calculation of available range of motion (aROM) in presacral intervertebral joints in sagittal bending (SB), lateral bending (LB), and axial rotation (AR). Our basic assumption was the existence of a mechanistic interrelation between the geometry of zygapophysial articular facets and aROM. Trigonometric formulae are developed for aROM calculation, of which the general principle is that the angle of rotation is given by the ratio of the arc length of motion to the radius of this arc. We tested a number of alterna

UNLABELLED: Prone positioning provides advantages for respiration and is routinely performed in preterm and sick term infants admitted to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the prone position on the diaphragm in neonates compared with that of the supine position using diaphragmatic ultrasound (DU). This was a prospective, observational, single-centre study. We enrolled preterm and sick term infants admitted to the NICU between August 2025 and March 2026. We conducted DU from the right zone of apposition (8-9th intercostal spaces, midaxillary line)

Scoliosis is a three-dimensional spinal deformity that may affect musculoskeletal alignment, respiratory mechanics, and neuromotor control. Rigid thoraco-lumbo-sacral orthoses (TLSOs) remain the primary conservative treatment during skeletal growth. Most brace systems rely on three-point pressure mechanisms that primarily generate lateral compression forces, while the contribution of shear components to corrective biomechanics has been insufficiently quantified. This study presents the experimental and analytical validation of the Canali Front-Push Orthopedic Brace, a rigid orthotic system des

BACKGROUND: Poland syndrome is a spectrum of deformities involving the chest/rib cage, breast bud, nipple-areola complex, upper limb, and surrounding tissue types, with pectoralis major muscle agenesis/hypoplasia as the cardinal feature. Although various surgical approaches exist, there remains a gap in the literature reporting long-term outcomes and patient-reported results for the pediatric population.
METHODS: A retrospective review identified 47 pediatric patients who underwent surgical reconstruction for Poland syndrome between 2003 and 2024 and subsequently underwent intervention under

OBJECTIVES: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) remains a significant global health challenge. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) plays a pivotal role in patient survival; the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) recommends compressions on the lower half of the sternum. However, emerging evidence suggests that performing compressions below this point, directly targeting the maximal diameter of the left ventricle, may improve cardiac output and clinical outcomes. This study assessed the safety of the new compression landmark by comparing complications with the standard ap

BACKGROUND: Conjoined twinning is a rare congenital malformation with an incidence of about 1.5 per 100,000 births. Because no consensus has been reached regarding the dysmorphology, thorough descriptions of conjoined twins as part of teratological collections can be useful to increase knowledge of this congenital malformation. In this case report, we describe a parapagus dicephalus twin from the collection of the Department of Anatomy of the University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands. External anatomical characteristics were assessed through a detailed macroscopic examination and in

INTRODUCTION: Isolated chest wall tuberculosis though a rare entity, the incidence of it has been on rise among immunocompromised population making it an important challenging diagnosis for the physicians. Its clinical presentation may resemble pyogenic chest wall abscess or chest wall soft tissue tumour. Sometimes it is difficult to detect clinically or on plain radiograph.
AIM: The present study was conducted with an aim to evaluate the common sites and varying appearances of isolated chest wall tuberculosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A hospital based cross-sectional retrospective study was c

Scoliosis correction surgery in pediatric patients poses complex anesthetic challenges due to significant anatomical deformities, cardiopulmonary compromise, and the potential for substantial blood loss. Patients frequently exhibit significant cardiopulmonary compromise due to severe thoracic curvature and rib cage distortion, which impairs pulmonary gas exchange and increases the likelihood of perioperative complications. The severity of Cobb's angle, the number of affected vertebrae, and coexisting syndromes like kyphoscoliosis influence these cardiopulmonary changes and can lead to abnormal

Thoracoabdominal asynchrony (TAA), the asynchronous volume changes between the rib cage and abdomen during breathing, is associated with respiratory distress, progressive lung volume loss, and chronic lung disease in the newborn infant. Preterm infants are prone to TAA risk factors such as weak intercostal muscles, surfactant deficiency, and a flaccid chest wall. The causes of TAA in this fragile population are not fully understood and, to date, the assessment of TAA has not included a mechanistic modeling framework to explore the role these risk factors play in breathing dynamics and how TAA

PURPOSE: Automatic liver segmentation from computed tomography (CT) images is an essential preprocessing step for computer-aided diagnosis of liver diseases. However, due to the large differences in liver shapes, low-contrast to adjacent tissues, and existence of tumors or other abnormalities, liver segmentation has been very challenging. This study presents an accurate and fast liver segmentation method based on a novel probabilistic active contour (PAC) model and its fast global minimization scheme (3D-FGMPAC), which is explainable as compared with deep learning methods.
METHODS: The propos

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Traumatic spinal injuries often require surgical fixation. Specific three-dimensional degrees of instability after spinal injury, which represent criteria for optimum treatment concepts, however, are still not well investigated.
PURPOSE: The aim of this review therefore was to summarize and quantify multiplanar instability increases due to spinal injury from experimental studies.
STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: Systematic review.
METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was performed using keyword-based search on PubMed and Web of Science databases in order to detect all in

Motor vehicle accident is the most common cause of blunt cardiac injury (BCI) in children (85.3%) due to the height of the child in relation to proper restraints and the compliant pediatric rib cage (J Trauma. 1996;40:200-202). Trauma to the chest wall may lead to injury of the myocardium, resulting in myocardial contusion, ventricular septal defect (VSD), ventricular free wall rupture, or valve compromise (J Trauma. 1996;40; 200-202; Heart Lung. 2012;41:200-202; J Inj Violence Res. 2012;4:98-100). There are several proposed mechanisms for the formation of VSD after blunt chest trauma includin

Chronic heart failure (CHF) is a condition in which both structure and functional capacity of cardiac muscle are impaired, resulting in ineffective peripheral tissue perfusion. Affecting numerous organs and systems, it is currently considered to be a systemic illness. Among significant, however until now, hardly recognized consequences of CHF there are ventilatory disorders. Their presence may be explained by proximity of heart and lungs inside rib cage or by close functional cooperation between these two organs. Ventilatory disorders clinically manifest as exacerbations of the underlying dise

STUDY DESIGN: A biomechanical study of the Charleston brace.
OBJECTIVE: To model the nighttime Charleston brace treatment and study its biomechanical action.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: The Charleston brace has been proposed as an alternative to the traditional daytime thoracolumbosacral orthosis for the treatment of moderate scoliotic deformities. It is worn at night and imposes a supine side-bending to reduce the major scoliotic curve. The biomechanics of the Charleston brace is still poorly understood.
METHODS: The geometry of the spine, pelvis, rib cage, and of the external trunk surfac

BACKGROUND: Upper abdominal surgery (UAS) induces diaphragmatic dysfunction. Thoracic extradural block (TEB) using 0.5% bupivacaine improves some pressure and motion indices of diaphragmatic function. However, no direct information on diaphragmatic activity is available after UAS. The aim of this study was to assess diaphragmatic electrical activity (Edi) after UAS before and after TEB.
METHODS: A postoperative electromyogram was obtained, using intramuscular electrodes inserted by the surgeon in the costal and crural parts of the diaphragm, in 14 patients undergoing abdominal aortic surgery.

As a first attempt to assess bone health in cleaner fish production, wild and cultured ballan wrasse Labrus bergylta and lumpfish Cyclopterus lumpus were examined by radiology. In C. lumpus, wild fish (57%) had more vertebra deformities (≥1 deformed vertebrae) than cultured fish (2-16%). One wild C. lumpus had lordosis and another was missing the tail fin. In L. bergylta, wild fish (11%) had fewer vertebra deformities than cultured individuals (78-91%). Among the cultured L. bergylta, 17-53% of the fish had severe vertebra deformities (≥6 deformed vertebrae) with two predominate sites of locat
