Pitted keratolysis, erythromycin, and hyperhidrosis.

Pitted keratolysis (PK) is a plantar skin disorder mainly caused by coryneform bacteria. A common treatment consists of the topical use of erythromycin. Hyperhidrosis is considered a predisposing factor for bacterial proliferation and, consequently, for the onset of PK. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between PK erythromycin and hyperhidrosis. All patients with PK seen in Sant'Andrea Hospital, between January 2009 and December 2011, were collected. PK was clinically and microscopically diagnosed. All patients underwent only topical treatment with erythromycin 3% gel twic

Topical sodium metabisulfite for the treatment of calcinosis cutis: a promising new therapy.

Calcinosis cutis is a chronic calcium-mediated disease that causes significant morbidity. Multiple treatments have been tried, with varying results; indeed, to date, no standard treatment has been generally accepted. Sodium metabisulfite is an inorganic compound that, when it reacts with oxygen, becomes sodium sulfate, a metabolite of sodium thiosulfate that has a similar ability to inhibit calcium oxalate agglomeration. Four women diagnosed with calcinosis cutis, secondary to dermatomyositis, systemic sclerosis and radiodermatitis after breast cancer, were evaluated for their response to topi

Molecular iodine is not responsible for cytotoxicity in iodophors.

BACKGROUND: Ten percent povidone-iodine (PVP-I) was initially promoted as 'tamed iodine' as the chemical activity of the active biocide, uncomplexed or free molecular iodine (I2), is reduced 30- to 50-fold compared with Lugol's solution. The idea that I2 is responsible for topical iodine staining and irritation remains widely held. However, there are no controlled studies that characterize the cytotoxicity and staining of the hydrophobic I2 species compared with the other hydrophilic iodine species that comprise over 99.9% of the total iodine in topical iodine disinfectants. AIMS: To compare
