3q29 interstitial microduplication: a new syndrome in a three-generation family.

Microdeletion and microduplication genetic syndromes are known to be a significant cause of developmental delay and dysmorphology. Utilizing high-resolution chromosome analysis, array CGH and SNP technologies we identified a novel genomic syndrome comprising of an interstitial duplication of approximately 1.61 Mb at the distal end of chromosome 3 band q29. The imbalance was present in five individuals in a three generation family with clinical features including mild to moderate mental retardation and microcephaly. The duplicated segment overlaps with and is the genomic counterpart of the rece

Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy Lom type in a Serbian family.

Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy Lom type (HMSNL), also called CMT 4D, a hereditary autosomal recessive neuropathy, caused by mutation in N-Myc downstream regulated gene 1 (NDRG1 gene), was first described in a Bulgarian Gypsy population near Lom and later has been found in Gypsy communities in Italy, Spain, Slovenia and Hungary. We present two siblings with HMSNL, female and male, aged 30 and 26, respectively in a Serbian non-consanguineous family of Gypsy ethnic origin. They had normal developmental milestones. Both had symptoms of lower limb muscle weakness and walking difficulties w

Expression of inhibitor-of-apoptosis protein family members in malignant mesothelioma.

Inhibitor-of-apoptosis proteins (IAPs) mediate cancer cell survival and chemoresistance. We analyzed the expressions of X-linked IAP (XIAP), survivin, and livin in malignant mesothelioma. Ten effusions were analyzed for XIAP, survivin, and livin expression using immunoblotting. Based on the immunoblotting results, 112 mesotheliomas from 94 patients (pleural, n = 77; peritoneal, n = 35; solid, n = 68; effusions, n = 44) were immunostained for XIAP and survivin expression. Results were analyzed for associations with anatomic site (pleura versus peritoneum), specimen type (solid versus effusion),

Characterization of a novel SPG3A deletion in a French-Canadian family.

Hereditary spastic paraplegias (HSPs) are characterized by progressive lower limb spasticity and weakness. Mutations in the SPG3A gene, which encodes the large guanosine triphosphatase atlastin, are the second most common cause of autosomal dominant hereditary spastic paraplegia. In a large SPG3A screen of 70 hereditary spastic paraplegia subjects, a novel in-frame deletion, p.del436N, was identified. Characterization of this deletion showed that it affects neither the guanosine triphosphatase activity of atlastin nor interactions between atlastin and spastin. Interestingly, immunoblot analysi

Predicting prognosis for the conduct-problem boy: can family history help?

OBJECTIVE: Many children with conduct disorder develop life-course persistent antisocial behavior; however, other children exhibit childhood-limited or adolescence-limited conduct disorder symptoms and escape poor adult outcomes. Prospective prediction of long-term prognosis in pediatric and adolescent clinical settings is difficult. Improved prognosis prediction would support wise allocation of limited treatment resources. The purpose of this article is to evaluate whether family history of psychiatric disorder can statically predict long-term prognosis among conduct-problem children. METHOD

Engaging suffering: towards a mindful re-visioning of family therapy practice.

The myth of problem-free living is easily identifiable in Western culture through its childhood fairy tales and modern love stories. Even if inadvertently, the field of mental health perpetuates this myth with the very concept of "mental health," which implies a state without suffering. Using mindfulness, Buddhists assume an alternative stance towards suffering: rather than eliminate it, they compassionately engage it. This article explores the potentials of mindfulness as an alternative approach to suffering within the context of marriage and family therapy. Family therapists can integrate mi

Reduced penetrance in a family with X-linked dominant chondrodysplasia punctata.

X-linked dominant chondrodysplasia punctata (Conradi-Hünermann disease, CDPX2) is characterised by short stature, stippled epiphyses, cataracts, ichthyosiform erythroderma and patchy alopecia of the scalp. The disorder is caused by mutations within the emopamil binding protein (EBP) gene encoding a 3beta-hydroxysteroid-Delta(8),Delta(7)-isomerase. The intrafamilial variation of disease severity is a known feature of CDPX2 probably caused by skewed X-inactivation. We report on a female fetus with typical symptoms of CDPX2 such as short limbs, postaxial polydactyly, ichthyotic skin lesions and p

Characterization of Schistosoma mansoni ATPDase2 gene, a novel apyrase family member.

Schistosoma mansoni is a major causative agent of schistosomiasis, which constitutes a severe health problem in developing countries. We have previously described the SmATPDase1 gene, encoding a protein from the external surface of the parasites. In this work, we describe the cloning and characterization of SmATPDase2, a novel CD39-like ATP diphosphohydrolase gene in S. mansoni. In silico analysis of the protein encoded by SmATPDase2 predicts a single N-terminal transmembrane domain similar to that described for secreted human apyrase isoforms. Immuno-colocalization experiments detected both S

N-thiolated beta-lactams: a new family of anti-Bacillus agents.

This report describes the evaluation of N-thiolated beta-lactam antibiotics as potential anti-Bacillus agents. N-Thiolated beta-lactams are a new family of antibacterials that previously have been found to selectively inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus bacteria over many other genera of microbes. From the data presented herein, these lactams similarly inhibit a variety of Bacillus species, including Bacillus anthracis. The preliminary structure-activity studies suggest that there is a need to balance the lipophilic character of the C3/C4 groups in order to obtain optimal anti-Bacillus activi

[Current researching situation of mucosal irritant compontents in Araceae family plants].

Plants in Acaceae family are often considered as ornamental and medicines. However many of them have irritation properties. As medicinal plants some of them are recorded in Chinese Pharmacopoeia and they are figured as poisonous. Through investigating the domestic and overseas studied paper, the needle-like calcium oxalate crystal exits in the plants of Acaceae family could be thought as irritation components of them. This conclusion is same with the studied conclusion of our study group in the medicines plant of Pinellia ternate belonging to the Acaceae family and our studies showed that the

Family history of cancer and the risk of renal cell cancer.

Only scant information is available on the association between family history of kidney cancer and risk of renal cell cancer (RCC), particularly as concerns the variation of the risk according to sex, age, and type of relative or the association of family history of other cancers with RCC. We thus investigated the issue using data from a large multicentric case-control study conducted in Italy between 1992 and 2004 on 767 patients (494 men and 273 women) under age 80 years, with incident, histologically confirmed RCC, and 1,534 controls under age 80 years, admitted to hospital for a wide spect
