Fish oil supplementation attenuates myointimal proliferation of the abdominal aorta after balloon injury in diet-induced hypercholesterolemic rabbits.

The effects of supplementing with fish oil on the myointimal proliferation of the abdominal aorta after balloon injury were studied in control and in rabbits fed a 1% cholesterol-enriched diet, with and without 10% fish oil supplementation. Twenty-one animals in each group underwent a balloon injury of the abdominal aorta and left common iliac artery after 2 weeks of feeding. The animals remained on their respective diets thereafter. In 7 balloon-injured and 7 sham-operated animals of each group, the abdominal aorta was harvested 3 days later for the analysis of prostanoids, malondialdehyde, s

Antioxidant Activity and HepG2 Cytoprotection of Water-Soluble Chili Pepper Polyphenols.

To clarify the purification enrichment of water-soluble polyphenols from chili pepper and their cellular antioxidant mechanisms, crude chili polyphenols (CCP) were prepared via ultrasound-assisted aqueous extraction and purified chili polyphenols (PCP) were obtained via D-101 macroporous resin purification. The total phenolic content (TPC) and in vitro antioxidant activity were compared between the two samples. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to identify the phenolic composition of PCP, and the protective effects of PCP against H2O2-induced oxidative d

Sodium arsenite and arsenic trioxide differently affect the oxidative stress of lymphoblastoid cells: An intricate crosstalk between mitochondria, autophagy and cell death.

Although the toxicity of arsenic depends on its chemical forms, few studies have taken into account the ambiguous phenomenon that sodium arsenite (NaAsO2) acts as a potent carcinogen while arsenic trioxide (ATO, As2O3) serves as an effective therapeutic agent in lymphoma, suggesting that NaAsO2 and As2O3 may act via paradoxical ways to either promote or inhibit cancer pathogenesis. Here, we compared the cellular response of the two arsenical compounds, NaAsO2 and As2O3, on the Burkitt lymphoma cell model, the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV)-positive P3HR1 cells. Using flow cytometry and biochemistry

From Molecules to Behavior in Long-Term Inorganic Mercury Intoxication: Unraveling Proteomic Features in Cerebellar Neurodegeneration of Rats.

Mercury is a severe environmental pollutant with neurotoxic effects, especially when exposed for long periods. Although there are several evidences regarding mercury toxicity, little is known about inorganic mercury (IHg) species and cerebellum, one of the main targets of mercury associated with the neurological symptomatology of mercurial poisoning. Besides that, the global proteomic profile assessment is a valuable tool to screen possible biomarkers and elucidate molecular targets of mercury neurotoxicity; however, the literature is still scarce. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the eff

Effect of vitamin E on characteristics of liver mitochondrial fractions from cold-exposed rats.

In cold exposed rats, it is known that vitamin E induces an increase in the respiration of the whole mitochondrial population isolated from liver. To obtain information on the effects of cold exposure and vitamin E treatment on the dynamics of mitochondrial population, we determined characteristics of rat liver mitochondrial fractions, resolved at 1,000 (M(1)), 3,000 (M(3)), and 10,000 g (M(10)). We found that cold exposure increased the liver content of total mitochondrial proteins irrespective of vitamin E treatment. Conversely, protein distribution among the mitochondrial subpopulations was

Oxidative stress and age-related neuronal deficits.

Research from our laboratory has indicated that the loss of sensitivity that occurs in several receptor systems as a function of age may be an index of an increasing inability to respond to oxidative stress (OS). This loss occurs partially as a result of altered signal transduction (ST). Assessments have involved determining the nature of age-related reductions in oxotremorine enhancement of K(+)-evoked dopamine release (K(+)-ERDA) from superfused striatal slices. Using this model, we have found that 1. Reductions can be restored with in vivo administration of the free-radical trapping agent,

Prenatal hyperhomocysteinemia induces oxidative stress and accelerates 'aging' of mammalian neuromuscular synapses.

Enhanced levels of homocysteine during pregnancy induce oxidative stress and contribute to many age-related diseases. In this study, we analyzed age-dependent synaptic modifications in developing neuromuscular synapses of rats with prenatal hyperhomocysteinemia (hHCY). One of the main findings indicate that the intensity and the timing of transmitter release in synapses of neonatal (P6 and P10) hHCY rats acquired features of matured synaptic transmission of adult rats. The amplitude and frequency of miniature end-plate currents (MEPCs) and evoked transmitter release were higher in neonatal hHC

[The appraisal of the level of photo- and peroxide resistance of human erythrocytic and lymphocytic cells in presence of biogenic amines].

The changes of photo- and peroxide resistance of erythrocytic and lymphocytic cells of human under influence of UV and some active oxygen forms in presence of biogenic amines such as serotonin, dopamine, adrenalin, histamine had been investigated. While investigating the degree of photohemolysis of erythrocytes it was discovered that biogenic compounds raise UV stability of erythrocytic membranes. By using the method of chemiluminescence it was established that biogenic amines increased the degree of peroxide resistance of human erythrocytic and lymphocytic cells. The decrease of the level of

Effect of nonylphenol on the antioxidant system in epididymal sperm of rats.

Nonylphenol, an environmental contaminant, has been shown to induce reproductive abnormalities in male rats. The nature and mechanism of action of nonylphenol on the epididymal sperm has not been elucidated. In the present study we have sought to investigate whether administration of nonylphenol induces oxidative stress in rat epididymal sperm. Nonylphenol was administered orally to male rats at 1, 10 and 100 microg/kg body weight per day for 45 days. Twenty-four hours after the last treatment, rats were weighed and killed using anaesthetic ether. The body weight of the animals treated with no

Horseradish peroxidase-catalyzed sulfoxidation of promethazine and properties of promethazine sulfoxide.

Promethazine sulfoxide was obtained with a quantitative yield in a horse radish peroxidase-catalyzed reaction of promethazine and hydrogen peroxide and was also prepared by direct chemical synthesis. The enzymatic sulfoxidation of promethazine was studied in vitro as a function of pH, promethazine, and hydrogen peroxide concentration. Promethazine sulfoxide inhibits with an apparent K(i) of 59.7 microM at pH 5.5 the enzymatic reaction, followed spectrophotometrically, polarographically, potentiometrically, and luminometrically. The reaction was also inhibited by ascorbic acid (K(i) 26.8 microM

Composite probiotics improve growth performance and enhance immune and antioxidant capacity in weaned yaks by modulating rumen microbiota and their metabolites.

BACKGROUND: After weaning, calves undergo a critical transition from liquid milk to solid feed. During this period, the digestive system is not yet fully mature and the rumen microbial community is still being established, which can easily lead to stress responses, growth retardation and other problems. Nutritional management and microecological regulation at this stage are crucial for rumen development, maturation of immune function and subsequent growth performance. Probiotics are regarded as an important nutritional and microecological strategy to alleviate weaning stress and promote the ma
