BACKGROUND: To examine the differences of associated characteristics and prescription drug use between co-occurring unipolar and bipolar disorders in patients with eating disorders (EDs).
METHODS: Patients with EDs and major depressive episode (MDE) were recruited from psychiatric outpatient clinics. They were interviewed and completed self-administered measures assessing eating and general psychopathology. The prescribed drugs at the index outpatient visit were recorded. Clinical characteristics and prescription drugs of groups with major depressive disorder (ED-MDD), MDE with lifetime mania

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is an intermittent hypoxia disorder associated with cognitive dysfunction, including learning and memory impairments. There is evidence that alterations in protease activity and neuronal activation are associated with cognitive dysfunction, are dependent on sex, and may be brain region-specific. However, the mechanisms mediating OSA-induced cognitive impairments are unclear. Therefore, we used a rat model of OSA, chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) to investigate protease activity (e.g., calpain and caspase-3) on spectrin, a cytoskeletal protein associa

Background: Trauma-focused treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are effective for many patients. However, relapse may occur when acquired extinction memories fail to generalize beyond treatment contexts. A subgroup of PTSD patients - potentially with substantial exposure to early-life adversity (ELA) - show dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which results in lower cortisol levels. Glucocorticoids, including cortisol, appear to facilitate strength and generalization of emotional memories. Objective: We describe the protocol of an integrated PTSD study

BACKGROUND: Neurocognitive deficits have been reported consistently in euthymic bipolar disorder (BD) across studies. Endophenotype potential of such deficits have been reported in a few studies. However, data from the Indian subcontinent is sparse, and no studies had a sample (patients and high-risk group) aged 20-25 years, which is the actual risk period for developing BD. We studied cognitive deficits, as a potential endophenotype for BD, in recently diagnosed BD (FEM-first episode mania) in remission, young unaffected first-degree relatives (HR) of patients with BD, and healthy controls (H

Although post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been associated with worse cognitive outcomes after mild traumatic brain injury (TBI), its impact has not been evaluated after more severe TBI. This study aimed to determine whether PTSD symptoms are related to cognition after complicated mild, moderate, severe, and penetrating TBI. Service members (n = 137) with a history of complicated mild/moderate TBI (n = 64) or severe/penetrating TBI (n = 73) were prospectively enrolled from United States Military Treatment Facilities. Participants completed a neuropsychological assessment one year or mo

BACKGROUND: Encephalitis is a group of inflammatory brain diseases caused by infectious or autoimmune processes. The predominant symptoms at the onset or during encephalitis are cognitive and behavioral changes, emotional dysregulation, and reduced self-awareness. When any cognitive function is affected, communication skill also gets affected, and this condition is referred to as cognitive communication disorder. There are few studies in the literature describing cognitive communication disorders after encephalitis. However, to our knowledge, there is no study that provides treatment for cogni

OBJECTIVES: Several studies consistently showed that patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have high rates of hoarding disorder (HD) comorbidity. The aim of the present study was to compare the clinical and cognitive features of adult ADHD patients with and without hoarding comorbidity according to a self-report measure, and a sample of healthy controls.
METHODS: Fifty-seven consecutive adult outpatients with a primary diagnosis of ADHD with comorbid hoarding disorder (ADHD+HD), 57 matched ADHD patients without hoarding disorder comorbidity (ADHD-HD), and a control gro

BACKGROUND: Dissociative amnesia, a disorder characterized by impairments in multiple memory areas, is frequently associated with trauma. Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) is marked by mood dysregulation, negative self-concept, and impaired interpersonal relationships, in addition to the classic symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The relationship between CPTSD and dissociative amnesia, as well as whether CPTSD should be considered a dissociative subtype, remains uncertain in the literature. Individuals diagnosed with CPTSD tend to exhibit higher levels of dissociat

Despite a great diagnostic overlap, complex posttraumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) has been recognised by the ICD-11 as a new, discrete entity and recent empirical evidence points towards a distinction from simple posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD). The development and maintenance of these disorders is sustained by neurobiological alterations and studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) may further contribute to a clear differentiation of CPTSD, PTSD and BPD. However, there are no existing fMRI studies directly comparing CPTSD, PTSD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is of great importance not only in children but also in adults; however, despite extensive research there are still many unsolved questions with respect to the diagnosis. Patients not only suffer from attention deficits and hyperactivity but also a variety of other problems, such as dyspraxia, problems with stimulus discrimination, dysgrammatism, legasthenia, or motor coordination problems. Furthermore, there are also psychopathological disorders, such as problems with memory, formal thinking, emotional modulation, drive and vegetative stability,

OBJECTIVE: To provide an overview of the animal and human research literature on the link between fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
METHOD: We conducted a comprehensive literature review that addressed the history of, and current research on, fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and FASD, as well as that on ADHD in children.
RESULTS: In animal and human research, there is emerging clinical, neuropsychological, and neurochemical evidence of a link between FASD and ADHD.
CONCLUSIONS: The evidence of the link between these 2 conditions has impl

Cholecystokinin (CCK) is the most abundant neuropeptide in the mammalian brain, and in man significant quantities are expressed in all regions of the brain.1,2 Therefore, CCK has been implicated in a variety of CNS functions-such as feeding behavior, anxiety, analgesia and memory functions as well as psychiatric disease like panic disorder and schizophrenia (for review, see2,3). Recently, a number of studies have indicated that a C-36 to T transition in the CCK gene promoter Sp1 element4 (Figure 1) is associated with alcoholism and withdrawal symptoms as well as panic disorder.5-7 Moreover, it

OBJECTIVE: The impact of disrupted sleep on the effectiveness of prolonged exposure (PE) therapy for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is not well understood. Researchers have suggested that comorbid sleep disorders contribute to nonresponse by impairing therapeutic mechanisms such as emotional processing of trauma memories and extinction in cued fear conditioning. Several studies indicate daytime sleepiness, insomnia, and nightmares are correlated with PTSD symptom severity. However, a recent randomized controlled trial found that these sleep disorder symptoms did not affect PTSD symptom c

Objective and accurate classification of fear levels is a socially important task that contributes to developing treatments for Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-compulsive Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and Phobia. This study examines a deep learning model to automatically estimate human fear levels with high accuracy using multichannel EEG signals and multimodal peripheral physiological signals in the DEAP dataset. The Multi-Input CNN-LSTM classification model combining Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and Long Sort-Term Memory (LSTM) estimated four fear levels with an accuracy

Behavioural experiments are an important component of cognitive-behavioural therapy. However, there exists little up-to-date guidance on how to conduct these in people with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. This paper provides recommendations on how to conduct behavioural experiments in this population. The aim is to upskill and empower clinicians to conduct behavioural experiments. The paper combines the expertise of senior clinicians working in the United Kingdom. The article starts by providing general advice on conducting behavioural experiments in people with bipolar disorder. It then offe

Biochemical imbalances, provoked by aging or a secondary illness, might directly affect the brain, causing severe problems, such as loss of memory or alteration of behavior patterns. Brain disorders are usually classified as injuries (such as stroke, hematomas, and concussions), tumors, and neurodegenerative (such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases) and mental (such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia) diseases. As the pathophysiology of these illnesses is not completely established and multiple factors are involved, metallomics, a bioanalytical strategy that allows the detecti

Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a commonly diagnosed childhood behavior disorder, yet knowledge of relations between ODD and early neuropsychological functions, particularly independent of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), is still limited. In addition, studies have not examined neuropsy chological functioning as it relates to the different ODD symptom dimensions. Structural equation modeling was used to investigate how preschool neuropsychological functioning predicted negative affect, oppositional behavior, and antagonistic behavior symptom dimensions of ODD in 224 six-

INTRODUCTION: Neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) produces nitric oxide (NO) in neurons, essential for learning and memory, but excessive activity causes oxidative/nitrosative stress, contributing to neuropsychiatric disorders. nNOS activation is regulated by calcium-activated calmodulin (CaM) binding and SUMO1 modification at the CaM-binding domain (CaMBD). Our prior studies showed modified CaMBD peptides can modulate NO production in mouse neurons, but their in vivo efficacy, particularly in the middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) model, remains untested. The overlap between SUMO1 and
