In vitro availability studies of enoxacin in presence of H2 receptor antagonists.

Enoxacin is a second-generation quinolone with increased antibacterial activity both in potency as well as in terms of broad spectrum against a wide range of clinically important pathogens over the first generation quinolones and produces its effect by inhibiting bacterial enzyme DNA gyrase. There are a number of drug interactions reported for enoxacin. On the other hand H2-receptor antagonists block gastric acid secretion and some cardiovascular effects of histamine. As the later drugs are used for a long-term therapy, they may be coadministered with other drugs. In present study in vitro rel

In vitro activity of novel rifamycins against gram-positive clinical isolates.

We describe novel rifamycins that have improved activity, compared with rifampin, against clinical isolates of staphylococci and streptococci, with MIC(90)s of 0.008 and 0.0005 microg/ml, respectively. This enhanced antibacterial activity, along with their potential lack of drug-drug interactions, are considerations that suggest the potential of these novel rifamycins in combination therapy to treat serious Gram-positive infections.

A two-component regulatory system mediates quorum sensing-dependent morphology and motility transitions in the archaeon Haloferax volcanii.

Quorum sensing (QS) enables microorganisms-including bacteria, eukaryotes, and viruses-to coordinate collective behaviors in response to population density. Despite their ecological and evolutionary significance, QS mechanisms in Archaea remain poorly characterized. The halophilic archaeon Haloferax volcanii provides a model for archaeal QS, transitioning from motile rods to non-motile disks in a density-dependent response to a secreted disk-forming signal (DFS). To identify components of the DFS regulatory network, we screened for spontaneous mutants that retained motility in DFS-containing s

Altered fecal microbial and metabolic profiles reveal potential mechanisms underlying anemia in patients with chronic renal failure.

The gut microbiomes communicate with the kidney and may play a crucial role in the development of anemia in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF). However, the alterations in microbiota and their association with functional metabolites remain unclear. We performed metagenomics and untargeted metabolomics in a cohort of 30 patients with anemia of CRF and 20 healthy controls (HCs) to identify the characteristics of the gut microbiome and explore its potential interactions with the host. Decreased microbiota diversity and significant compositional differences were observed in the patients wit

Effects of Sulfate Reduction on Trichloroethene Dechlorination by Dehalococcoides-Containing Microbial Communities.

In order to elucidate interactions between sulfate reduction and dechlorination, we systematically evaluated the effects of different concentrations of sulfate and sulfide on reductive dechlorination by isolates, constructed consortia, and enrichments containing Dehalococcoides sp. Sulfate (up to 5 mM) did not inhibit the growth or metabolism of pure cultures of the dechlorinator Dehalococcoides mccartyi 195, the sulfate reducer Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough, or the syntroph Syntrophomonas wolfei In contrast, sulfide at 5 mM exhibited inhibitory effects on growth of the sulfate reducer

Timing of galectin-1 exposure differentially modulates Nipah virus entry and syncytium formation in endothelial cells.

UNLABELLED: Nipah virus (NiV) is a deadly emerging enveloped paramyxovirus that primarily targets human endothelial cells. Endothelial cells express the innate immune effector galectin-1 that we have previously shown can bind to specific N-glycans on the NiV envelope fusion glycoprotein (F). NiV-F mediates fusion of infected endothelial cells into syncytia, resulting in endothelial disruption and hemorrhage. Galectin-1 is an endogenous carbohydrate-binding protein that binds to specific glycans on NiV-F to reduce endothelial cell fusion, an effect that may reduce pathophysiologic sequelae of N

Recent advances in membrane vesicles of Streptococcus mutans: biogenesis, regulations, and functions.

BACKGROUND: Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) is a major cariogenic pathogen in the oral cavity that actively releases membrane vesicles (MVs) encapsulating proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. These highly heterogeneous MVs not only help regulate homeostasis of the local oral microecology but may also affect systemic health. A comprehensive review of the physiological characteristics of S. mutans MVs is therefore of considerable research value. OBJECTIVE: By summarizing the latest advances in research on S. mutans MVs, this review provides a broad overview of the relevant studies to elucidate

Interaction of human gut microbiota and local immune system in progression of colorectal adenoma (MIMICA-1): a protocol for a prospective, observational cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The current understanding of colorectal carcinogenesis is based on the adenoma-carcinoma sequence, where genetics, intestinal microbiota changes and local immunity shifts seem to play the key roles. Despite the emerging evidence of dysbiotic intestinal state and immune-cell infiltration changes in patients with colorectal adenocarcinoma, early and advanced adenoma as precursors of colorectal cancer, and carcinoma in situ as the following progression, are rather less studied. The newly colon-site adapted AI-based analysis of immune infiltrates is able to predict long-term outcomes

Magnesium oxide-containing radiopaque polyurethane for infection-resistant catheter applications.

The increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance highlights the urgent need for advanced antimicrobial materials preventing device-associated infections. This growing threat has spurred intensive research into alternative approaches to prevent bacterial colonisation, particularly in medical devices such as catheters highly susceptible to microbial contamination and biofilm formation. The incorporation of magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles on polymeric matrices offers a promising approach to developing antibacterial materials for biomedical applications. In this study, thermoplastic polyuret

Engineering Multi-Scale Transdermal Delivery Systems for Atopic Dermatitis: Emerging Insights from the Gut-Skin Axis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, recurrent inflammatory skin disease, for which traditional treatments are constrained by limited efficacy, high relapse rates, and poor long-term safety. The gut-skin axis has emerged as a critical regulatory network linking intestinal homeostasis and skin health, and is increasingly recognized as a potential contributor to the onset and progression of AD. It plays a multifaceted regulatory role in maintaining immune homeostasis, reconstructing barrier functions, and mediating microbial metabolite signaling. Within this conceptual framework, this review sum

Metabolic fingerprinting of periodontal bacteria: a multi-scale mass spectrometry and vibrational spectroscopy approach.

Periodontitis is a prevalent condition characterised by progressive destruction of the supporting periodontium around teeth, resulting from prolonged interactions between the host immune system and bacterial infection. Classifying periodontal bacteria remains challenging due to their high diversity, culturability, strain level variability, biofilm complexity, and methodological constraints. Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy was employed to investigate the biochemical composition of five oral Streptococcus spp., Porphyromonas gingivalis, Actinomyces israelii, Fusobacterium nucleat

A potent dual-targeting antimicrobial peptide specifically against Streptococcus mutans biofilms.

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries, which are caused primarily by Streptococcus mutans biofilms, demand targeted antimicrobial strategies to overcome the limitations of broad-spectrum agents such as chlorhexidine (CHX). Here, we designed and synthesized a chimeric peptide (PMF) integrating three functional domains to achieve species-selective anti-microbial and anti-biofilm activities. METHODS: The antimicrobial peptides were chemically synthesized, and their biological activities were assessed. These included hemolytic and cytotoxic effects, antibacterial activity against planktonic bacteria, and a

The characterization of a new stabilized lactonase from the endophytic fungi Aspergillus pseudonomiae with anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.

Microorganisms use diverse small-molecule signals to coordinate behavior, supporting interspecies and interkingdom communication. These chemical dialogs shape fundamental biological processes and define interactions from cooperation to antagonism. Quorum-quenching (QQ) enzymes, which degrade or modify quorum sensing (QS) molecules such as N-acyl-homoserine lactones (AHLs), may play a pivotal role in shaping these networks. While bacterial QQ lactonases are well-characterized, fungal lactonases remain undercharacterized, including their potential to target both bacterial QS molecules and fungal
