Atypical sulcal pattern in boys with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

Neurodevelopmental disorders, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), are often accompanied by disrupted cortical folding. We applied a quantitative sulcal pattern analysis technique using graph structures to study the atypical cortical folding at the lobar level in ADHD brains in this study. A total of 183 ADHD patients and 167 typical developmental controls matched according to age and gender were enrolled. We first constructed sulcal graphs at the brain lobar level and then investigated their similarity to the typical sulcal patterns. The within-group variability and interh

Neuroanatomy and severity of stroke in patients with type A aortic dissection.

BACKGROUND: Strokes are a longstanding complication of acute type A aortic dissection (ATAAD) repair. Understanding the neuroanatomy, mechanism, and severity of stroke will facilitate efforts to improve prediction, prevention, and treatment strategies. METHODS: Retrospective review of patients who sustained stroke from a consecutive series of patients undergoing ATAAD repair. Neuroimaging was interpreted by two stroke neurologists blinded to clinical results. Severity of stroke was assessed by the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). Residual disability at 30 days was assessed

Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography findings in neurodegenerative diseases: Current status and future directions.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) are characterized by progressive neuronal loss, leading to dementia and movement disorders. NDDs broadly include Alzheimer's disease, frontotemporal lobar degeneration, parkinsonian syndromes, and prion diseases. There is an ever-increasing prevalence of mild cognitive impairment and dementia, with an accompanying immense economic impact, prompting efforts aimed at early identification and effective interventions. Neuroimaging is an essential tool for the early diagnosis of NDDs in both clinical and research settings. Structural, functional, and metabolic imag

Diffusion-Weighted Imaging in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

There is evidence that diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is able to detect tissue alterations following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) that may not be observed on conventional neuroimaging; however, findings are often inconsistent between studies. This systematic review assesses patterns of differences in DWI metrics between those with and without a history of mTBI. A PubMed literature search was performed using relevant indexing terms for articles published prior to May 14, 2020. Findings were limited to human studies using DWI in mTBI. Articles were excluded if they were not full-length,

Grey matter abnormalities in Tourette syndrome: an activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tourette syndrome (TS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder defined by the continual presence of primary motor and vocal tics. Grey matter abnormalities have been identified in numerous studies of TS, but conflicting results have been reported. This study was an unbiased statistical meta-analysis of published neuroimaging studies of TS structures. METHODS: A voxel quantitative meta-analysis technique called activation likelihood estimation (ALE) was used. The meta-analysis included six neuroimaging studies involving 247 TS patients and 236 healthy controls. A statistical threshold of

Unified framework for early stage status prediction of autism based on infant structural magnetic resonance imaging.

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a developmental disability that is diagnosed at about 2 years of age based on abnormal behaviors. Existing neuroimaging-based methods for the prediction of ASD typically focus on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI); however, most of these fMRI-based studies include subjects older than 5 years of age. Due to challenges in the application of fMRI for infants, structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) has increasingly received attention in the field for early status prediction of ASD. In this study, we propose an automated prediction frame

Alcohol and the Brain.

Alcohol works on the brain to produce its desired effects, e.g., sociability and intoxication, and hence the brain is an important organ for exploring subsequent harms. These come in many different forms such as the consequences of damage during intoxication, e.g., from falls and fights, damage from withdrawal, damage from the toxicity of alcohol and its metabolites and altered brain structure and function with implications for behavioral processes such as craving and addiction. On top of that are peripheral factors that compound brain damage such as poor diet, vitamin deficiencies leading to

Intrauterine Zika virus infection: review of the current findings with emphasis in the prenatal and postnatal brain imaging diagnostic methods.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a widespread flavivirus transmitted to humans through the bite of Aedes mosquitoes. The number of ZIKV cases increased significantly between 2015 and 2016, and Brazil was the first to report autochthonous transmission of infection. The main neurological disorder related to ZIKV infection is microcephaly. Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the gold standard examination for the analysis of fetal brain infection, followed by obstetric ultrasonography. Cerebral atrophy, intracranial calcifications, ventriculomegaly, cerebellar, and brain gyrus abnormalities are some of

MICROSURGICAL MANAGEMENT OF A RARE INCIDENTAL INTRAVENTRICULAR MENINGIOMA: A CASE REPORT AND RELEVANT LITERATURE REVIEW.

Intraventricular meningiomas are rare and make up between 0.5% and 3% of all intracranial meningiomas, representing one of the most challenging tumors in neurosurgery due to their difficult location. Being initially asymptomatic, such tumors usually attain large size before clinical presentation and diagnostic detection. Available literature concerned with their surgical management remains scarce. Herein, we present a case of microsurgical resection of incidental intraventricular meningioma in a 32-year-old female patient who was admitted to the hospital due to the sudden loss of consciousness

An image is not always worth a thousand words: an image mimic of transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a neurological syndrome with rather distinctive brain MRI features, namely hyperintense lesion in hippocampus on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequences. Post-traumatic amnesia is another amnestic syndrome which can also show hyperintense lesions in brain MRI due to cytotoxic oedema caused by traumatic brain injury. We present a case of a patient with post-traumatic amnesia with a brain MRI image mimic of TGA.

Mapping internal brainstem structures using MP2RAGE derived T1 weighted and T1 relaxation images at 3 and 7 T.

The brainstem is a site of early pathology in several neurodegenerative diseases. The overall goal of this project was (a) To develop a method to segment internal brainstem structures from MP2RAGE derived images. (b) To compare the segmentations at 3 and 7 T. (c) To investigate age effects on intensities and segmentations. MP2RAGE derived T1 weighted images (UNI) and T1 relaxation maps (T1map) were obtained from two public data sets (LEMON: 50 3 T data sets, ATAG: 46 7 T data sets). The UNI and T1map images were rescaled using a linear scaling procedure and a ratio (RATIO) image calculated. Th

Prevalence and Incidence of Microhemorrhages in Adolescent Football Players.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: SWI is an advanced imaging modality that is especially useful in cerebral microhemorrhage detection. Such microhemorrhages have been identified in adult contact sport athletes, and the sequelae of these focal bleeds are thought to contribute to neurodegeneration. The purpose of this study was to utilize SWI to determine whether the prevalence and incidence of microhemorrhages in adolescent football players are significantly greater than those of adolescent noncontact athletes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Preseason and postseason SWI was performed and evaluated on 78 adolesc

Cerebellar Watershed Injury in Children.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Focal signal abnormalities at the depth of the cerebellar fissures in children have recently been reported to represent a novel pattern of bottom-of-fissure dysplasia. We describe a series of patients with a similar distribution and appearance of cerebellar signal abnormality attributable to watershed injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-three children with MR imaging findings of focal T2 prolongation in the cerebellar gray matter and immediate subjacent white matter at the depth of the fissures were included. MR imaging examinations were qualitatively analyzed for th

Metals in Imaging of Alzheimer's Disease.

One of the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the deposition of amyloid plaques in the brain parenchyma, which occurs 7-15 years before the onset of cognitive symptoms of the pathology. Timely diagnostics of amyloid formations allows identifying AD at an early stage and initiating inhibitor therapy, delaying the progression of the disease. However, clinically used radiopharmaceuticals based on 11C and 18F are synchrotron-dependent and short-lived. The design of new metal-containing radiopharmaceuticals for AD visualization is of interest. The development of coordination compounds capable
