A machine learning model for mortality prediction in patients with severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome: a prospective, multicenter cohort study.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease that imposes a considerable medical burden. In this study, we enrolled 1,606 SFTS patients, developed and validated machine learning models for mortality prediction, and ultimately constructed a model consisting of six variables. The prediction model, UNION-SFTS, constructed using the multilayer perceptron (MLP) algorithm, achieved the best performance with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.917, an accuracy of 0.905, and a precision of 0.795 on the internal validation set. Additionally, the model achieved an

Self-Reported Symptoms of COVID-19, Including Symptoms Most Predictive of SARS-CoV-2 Infection, Are Heritable.

Susceptibility to infection such as SARS-CoV-2 may be influenced by host genotype. TwinsUK volunteers (n = 3261) completing the C-19 COVID-19 symptom tracker app allowed classical twin studies of COVID-19 symptoms, including predicted COVID-19, a symptom-based algorithm to predict true infection, derived from app users tested for SARS-CoV-2. We found heritability of 49% (32-64%) for delirium; 34% (20-47%) for diarrhea; 31% (8-52%) for fatigue; 19% (0-38%) for anosmia; 46% (31-60%) for skipped meals and 31% (11-48%) for predicted COVID-19. Heritability estimates were not affected by cohabiting

Bus Travel Time Prediction Model Based on Profile Similarity.

In road-based mass transit systems, travel time is a key factor in providing quality of service. This article proposes a method of predicting travel time for this type of transport system. This method estimates travel time by taking into account its historical behaviour, represented by historical profiles, and the current behaviour recorded on the public transport vehicle for which the prediction is to be made. The model uses the k-medoids clustering algorithm to obtain historical travel time profiles. A relevant feature of the model is that it does not require recent travel time data from oth

Characterisation of heavy oils using near-infrared spectroscopy: optimisation of pre-processing methods and variable selection.

In this study, chemometric predictive models were developed from near infrared (NIR) spectra for the quantitative determination of saturates, aromatics, resins and asphaltens (SARA) in heavy petroleum products. Model optimisation was based on adequate pre-processing and/or variable selection. In addition to classical methods, the potential of a genetic algorithm (GA) optimisation, which allows the co-optimisation of pre-processing methods and variable selection, was evaluated. The prediction results obtained with the different models were compared and decision regarding their statistical signi

The BOADICEA model of genetic susceptibility to breast and ovarian cancer.

Several genes conferring susceptibility to breast and ovarian cancer, notably BRCA1 and BRCA2, have been identified. The majority of the familial aggregation of breast cancer is, however, not explained by these genes. We have previously derived, using segregation analysis, a susceptibility model (BOADICEA, Breast and Ovarian Analysis of Disease Incidence and Carrier Estimation Algorithm) in which susceptibility to these genes is explained by mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 together with a polygenic component reflecting the joint multiplicative effect of multiple genes of small effect on breast ca

Self-contrastive weakly supervised learning framework for prognostic prediction using whole slide images.

We present a pioneering investigation into the application of deep learning techniques to analyze histopathological images for addressing the substantial challenge of automated prognostic prediction. Prognostic prediction poses a unique challenge as the ground truth labels are inherently weak, and the model must anticipate future events that are not directly observable in the image. To address this challenge, we propose a novel three-part framework comprising of a convolutional network based tissue segmentation algorithm for region of interest delineation, a contrastive learning module for fea
