Effects of TRH and TRH analogues on the central regulation of breathing in the rat.

Respiratory activity was studied in rats during light halothane anesthesia. Thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) and two TRH analogues: the desamidated form (TRH-OH) and gamma-butyrolactone-gamma-carbonyl-L-histidyl-L-prolinamide citrate (DN 1417) were administered intracerebroventricularly. TRH 0.5-5 micrograms induced a marked tachypnoea with a rapid onset and a duration of at least 20 min. DN 1417, a potent analogue of TRH with a very low TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) releasing activity was more effective in stimulating respiratory frequency, while TRH-OH, regarded to have neither TSH re

Viral Pathogen-Specific Severe Acute Respiratory Infections in Hospitalised Adults in Europe: Epidemiological Findings from the id.DRIVE Study 2024-2025.

INTRODUCTION: Lower respiratory tract infections represent a major public health burden, but adult data on respiratory viruses except influenza and COVID-19 are limited. Most European surveillance systems report aggregate data lacking patient-level detail. METHODS: We utilised the multicountry id.DRIVE surveillance study data to describe the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of adults hospitalised with pathogen-specific severe acute respiratory infections (SARI) during 2024-2025. Adults (≥ 18 years) hospitalised with SARI across 17 hospitals in Spain, Italy, and Germany bet

Respiratory and Other Infections Following COVID.

BACKGROUND: One hypothesis for the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) surge in 2022 was suppression of immune responses following SARS-CoV-2 infection. Our objective was to compare the risk of subsequent RSV and other infections among children with and without SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using electronic health record data from 27 US health systems analyzing children aged under 5 years with SARS-CoV-2 infection (test/coded) between March and July 2022. The comparison groups were children with (a) influenza infection and (b) respiratory tract infecti

A pediatric case of Chlamydia psittaci caused severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) in Italy.

BACKGROUND: This case of psittacosis in children, is the first described in literature, in Italy. This respiratory infection can be transmitted to humans from the inhalation of respiratory secretions, feces and plumage aerosol of infected birds (and other animals). Usually it can have an asymptomatic or paucisymptomatic course, and the onset is often flu-like, but in this case the child risked his life for a severe respiratory failure. This report is unique because in children psittacosis is rare, and always misdiagnosed, or could cause a delayed diagnosis because of lack of awareness among th

Survival of patients with chronic respiratory failure on long-term oxygen therapy and or non-invasive ventilation at home.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Chronic respiratory failure (CRF) is the common fate of respiratory diseases where systemic effects contribute to outcomes. In a prospective cohort of home-treated patients with CRF, we looked for predictors of long-term survival including respiratory, nutritional and inflammatory dimensions. METHODS: 637 stable outpatients with CRF, 397 men, 68 ± 11 years, on long-term oxygen therapy and/or non-invasive ventilation from 21 chest clinics were enrolled and followed over 53 ± 31 months. CRF resulted from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) in 48.5%, restrictive disor

Stewart-based characterisation of blood acid-base recovery over 48 h following exercise under hot condition in camels (Camelus dromedarius).

OBJECTIVE: Exercise in desert heat disturbs respiratory and metabolic balance in camels. Unlike the Henderson-Hasselbalch model, which focuses mainly on bicarbonate and carbon dioxide, Stewart's physicochemical approach clarifies acid-base regulation through strong-ion and weak-acid effects. This experiment investigated post-exercise acid-base recovery dynamics in exercise-unacclimatized dromedary camels under hot field conditions using Stewart's approach. METHODS: Five healthy bull camels completed a standardized 90-min field exercise at approximately 14 km·h-1 during midday heat. Recovery w

Relevance and comparability of global laboratory molecular detection of influenza by the U.S. Department of War, 2025-2026.

The U.S. Department of War (DOW)'s Global Emerging Infections Surveillance (GEIS) program conducts influenza surveillance within all geographic combatant commands to enhance U.S. force health protection and military readiness. This report compares laboratory-confirmed influenza data from the GEIS network with the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS) from late 2025 through early 2026. Findings from the most recent 2025-2026 respiratory season show that while influenza trends were largely similar, with influenza A/H3N2 predominating, significa

A multicomponent Fc-fused subunit vaccine induces cross-protective immunity against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus QYYZ-like and NADC30-like strains.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) causes substantial economic burdens on the global swine industry each year. The emergence of multiple novel recombinant porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) strains has limited the efficacy of current commercial vaccines, highlighting the urgent need for cross-protective PRRSV vaccines. In this study, GP4Fc, GP5Fc, and MFc fusion proteins were successfully expressed in the Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell expression system. The subunit vaccine based on these fusion proteins elicited PRRSV-specific humoral and cellular

Asthma in Pregnancy.

Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases affecting pregnant women with variable prevalence around the world. Hormonally mediated and physical changes to the respiratory system occur during pregnancy and can impact asthma status unpredictably-some women improve, some worsen and some are stable. Increased maternal and foetal adverse outcomes are observed with uncontrolled asthma. Medication non-adherence increases in pregnancy, often because of concerns regarding the effect of medications on the developing foetus and is a major contributor to loss of asthma control. Certain comorbiditie

Viral Infection Correlates with a Better Clinical Outcome than Pulmonary Exacerbation of Bacterial Origin in Paediatric Patients with Cystic Fibrosis.

Cystic fibrosis is a progressive disease affecting various organs of the human body, including the respiratory system. While the effect of bacterial infection on cystic fibrosis outcome has been comprehensively described, little is known about the impact of viruses. We collected 49 nasopharyngeal swabs derived from cystic fibrosis paediatric patients during pulmonary exacerbation and tested them for the presence of respiratory viruses to elucidate the influence of the viral infection on their clinical outcome. We found that patients infected with a virus, compared to those in whom molecular te

The cGAS-STING signaling pathway in the regulation of pulmonary infections: a systematic review.

The lungs are constantly exposed to airborne pathogens and depend on robust innate immune surveillance for protection. The cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS)-stimulator of interferon genes (STING) signaling pathway, a core component of the innate immune system, plays a pivotal role in defending against respiratory infections caused by viruses, bacteria, and mycobacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Dysregulation of this pathway has been linked to several chronic lung diseases, such as cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, and asthma

Mesenchymal Stem Cells in the Treatment of COVID-19.

Since the emergence of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, many lives have been tragically lost to severe infections. The COVID-19 impact extends beyond the respiratory system, affecting various organs and functions. In severe cases, it can progress to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and multi-organ failure, often fueled by an excessive immune response known as a cytokine storm. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have considerable potential because they can mitigate inflammation, modulate immune responses, and promote tissue regeneration. Accumulating evidence underscores t

Cyanoacrylate glue foreign body after CT-guided localization of a pulmonary nodule during video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery: a case report.

BACKGROUND: A tracheal foreign body is a common airway aspiration that creates an emergency, which often causes unobserved respiratory problems and requires management. Iatrogenic tracheal foreign bodies are rarely observed, which results in tracheal obstruction. If the foreign body were removed from the tracheobronchial system, it would save lives. A similar case of a tracheal foreign body was focused on, which was caused by medical glue used during preoperative computed tomography localization of pulmonary nodules. CASE PRESENTATION: The foreign body was deposited in the right upper bronchi

Esophageal lung misdiagnosed as tracheoesophageal fistula: A case report.

An esophageal lung is a subtype of communicating bronchopulmonary foregut malformation (CBPFM) where the lung, often right side, communicates with the esophagus, which causes hypoplastic and consolidated diseased lung, and is usually diagnosed late in its clinical course. Clinical suspicion based on patient history, signs, and symptoms should lead to this opinion. A chest CT scan combined with esophagography is highly recommended for suspicious cases. Here, we describe the case of a 3-month-old female infant who was referred to our hospital because of respiratory distress. The diagnosis of the

Lung and large airway imaging: magnetic resonance imaging versus computed tomography.

Disorders of the respiratory system are common in children and imaging plays an important role for initial diagnosis and follow-up evaluation. Radiographs are typically the first-line imaging test for respiratory symptoms in children and, when advanced imaging is required, CT has been the most frequently used imaging modality. However, because of increasing concern about potentially harmful effects of ionizing radiation on children, there has been a shift toward MRI in pediatric imaging. Although MRI of chest in children presents many technical challenges, recent advances in MRI technology are

Combination Therapies against COVID-19.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the causative agent of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which was announced as a pandemic leading to devastating economic and medical burden worldwide. The virus attacks the organ system across the body by binding to its receptor (for example, angiotensin converting enzyme 2) on the surface of the host cell of various organs. The patients present with a variety of pathological symptoms ranging from fever, cough and cytokine storm to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Many combination therapies have been developed to c

Concomitant cardiac surgery and fixation of bilateral rib fractures sustained during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

BACKGROUND: Chest compressions during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) may cause sternal or rib fractures and chest wall instability. This can complicate medical management and significantly impair respiratory function. Surgical management of flail chest is technically demanding, and it becomes even more challenging if the patient requires a concomitant cardiac procedure. CASE PRESENTATION: A 78-year-old male suffered a cardiac arrest and sustained sternal and bilateral rib fractures during a successful CPR. He underwent a concomitant coronary artery bypass grafting and aortic valve replac
